Sometimes when I go to start the motor after fishing the high pressure feul pump won't start when the key is turned.Doesn't do it all the time just like once a month.yesterday it quit till I got home pulled pump cleaned and Goin to reinstall.shoulda checked for power at pump when not working but didn't have the tools. question is what would cause the pump not to run? Wouldn't the ecu pump circuit just die and be dead.

Common problem. Clean and spread the pins at the ECU plug connector first. If that doesn't work you need to check the pump by powering straight to it with a 12v wire and a ground wire. If the pump works the pump driver is likely bad. If not the pump is bad. If the pump test good, on the starboard side look for a power junction w/ a.3/8ths nut holding a purple wire just above the starter solenoid. It gets power when the key is turned on. From their run a red power wire w/20amp fuse to the + of the pump and a black ground from the - to a good ground. Tape the old wires out of the way. Or you can spend 900.00 and have the ECU repaired. Also I have had to replace the wiring harness on some of these motors. Turn key on and wiggle the wires of the harness.

Does it stop when tha motor is runnin' or just fails ta not run when tha key is turned on?
Usually tha driver circuit fails "completely"... Have seen a coupla cases of it goin' south AFTER its been runnin' a little while.....then resumes after settin' a bit. Its rare but does happen.

May be tha ecu "driver" circuit after all. One way ta find out tha "backyard" way will be to by-pass tha ecu driver circuit completely. It needs ta be done with a relay. Lotsa folks do this till ecu is fixed (not recommended in your case, too old) or replaced with newer ecu.
Is this tha number on your ecu?.............824003-2, A2

Sounds dumb but first thing is to check the connector at the pump.
Fishing a tourney a few years ago and the boat died while moving spots. Never restarted. We just made our way back to the ramp and fished using the trolling motor. After about 3 hours a light bulb went off to check the wife connector to the fuel pump. It was on but loose.
Crimped the connector tighter and fired back up. Never an issue since.
Hopefully it's could be that simple.

im telling you check the ground from the key to the engine. Mine was doing the exact same thing. I spliced in a new ground at ignition switch ran that to the battery and then from battery to engine. problem solved. this is a pretty common problem Ive found. Also it really don't cost anything to do this either.
