Just curious and wanted to bring it up. Talked to one mechanic and said decarbing is good on older motors. Had another one tell me they don't like to do it because there's small pits in older motors pistons where the carbon builds up and removing it can cause power loss?

I decarbed my 82 175 johnson and changed to full synthetic pennzoil and recommend everyone do it no matter what the age, especially if you run regular oil or even synthetic mix.
2 cans of seafoam in a couple gallons of mix and run it half out on the muffs, go to lake and run the krap out of it till empty (carry a couple gallons mix in a can).
then run seafoam about every second or third tank, one can to 20-25 gals of gas.

also did my 96 175 johnson.

you will see a good difference in how it runs.

No 1 killer on a outboard is rings sticking from carbon.
I have decarbed my outboards for the past 40 years.
And to this date all has went well.

The idea is to get the carbon out before it causes any damage and then to use a good additive to prevent ever having carbon build up again. Carbon will also build up in the tuner and exhaust adapter and cause performance issues. Their is some brands of fuel that already have cleaner in the fuel. Example: Chevron has Techtron, which is reported to be the base for Yamaha ring-free and several other fuel cleaning additives. I prefer Sea Foam.

If you run fresh fuel with the proper additives, there will be no need to de-carbonize it.

That. Is not possible. Every drop of gas refined today has funk in it that builds up. De carbon should be yearly maintenance on any motor today. It just takes one small piece to turn into a charcoal brick and pre-detonate that cylinder. Grenade when that happens.

What are the steps to de-carb? I have a 1992 175 Mariner.

Pat knows his stuff. For the mariner instructions should be right on the power tune can. If not google will produce plenty of info on doing it.

You know more than I do on this stuff but, I have always been under the impression that running an outboard at anything other than a high idle is bad for an outboard. I have been told to only run it at higher RPMs while it is loaded.

Here is my process it's more effort than some but the results are worth it.

Warning! Your neighbors won't like you!

Two cans power tune.
Remove cowling and carb cover. Or EFI cover.

Warm up engine on hose.
Hand open carbs or EFI throttle spray in until it gags the motor. Empty 1st can in intake. Then remove plugs and empty second can in cylinders. Replace plugs walk away. I like to let it sit overnight then take to water and run it hard.
