trinity river 8/23/2014 with allyse, we had about 6 or 7 runs for the day all on cut carp, it was kind of a learning day today figuring out what works and doesn't when it comes to hooking the gar, we managed to land a nice little 30 pound gar(unfortunately he didnt eat allyse's little rod i set up for her), i set the hook on the biggest freshwater fish of my life..hooked it on 80 pound braid with lots of drag on the reel..the gar just surged upstream and found a tree to tangle me in like it was nothing..was fighting it from the kayak through the tree for 20 minutes..really a shame..seriously nice fish..we had a good time on the river and saw lots of neat things, gonna go get some money magic carp for bait and im headed back this week..gonna try to get back on the monster gar i lost.

Congrats dude. What part of the Trinity did u launch from?

near crocket, texas, the trinity is about 140 miles from me there and the brazos is about 80-90 gonna be fishing both soon..we had a few dropped baits, especially on my kiddos spinning rod..they would swim around with it for 5 minutes then the line would go slack..my tequneque has been wait for about 5 minutes while they run, wait for them to stop then set the hook when they start moving again..that how i have had the most hookups..

interestingly all bites were on just a wire leader and cut carp..didnt hook any on floats. kinda prefer them eating the baits off the bottom really..also have yet to get a treble hook to stick yet, been having the most luck with about 3 inch long J hooks..
