I haven't been up there in probably 10 years. I just wanted to tell you to have a great time! If you haven't been up there before, it's beautiful!
We fished the ponds on the left side of the road after going thru town. Used Trout PowerBait on spinning rods behind a casting bubble. Them trout are fun! Wish I knew how to flyfish, that would have been a blast.
Be sure and make the drive out to the hatchery if you want to see some HUGE trout!

I went up there about 3-4 years ago and I had a blast. We stayed in some cabins that had a pond. You were allowed 5 fish per cabin a day. It was $6 a fish after the 5. We spent some money on those trout. They are fun on ultra light spinning tackle. We would use the powerbait also. The pond we were fishing was very mossy on the bottom. I would take and put a swivel and put a hook on a leader about 12-18 inches. The swivel is for weight and the powerbait would float on top. What fun. You could see them come up and hammer the bait. It was a blast. We have pics at home I will try to put up. We got to see them put them in there also. Tons of trout. There was a BIG one swimming around and he would not take anything. We went horseback riding, could not go in the mountains. I think there was a fire ban so the mountains were off limits. We got to see a baby elk that was born that morning. Pretty neat. Good Luck and have fun. ------------------ David
Yes I did admit defeat. Good job back to back champion

Kelly, I can beat that. I haven't been to Red River in over 22 years. I remember those ponds, but never fished them. We mainly fished the portions of the river in town near one bridge. As a kid, I was able to see the trout under the bridge and caught several using these, from what I remember, dead flies in a package. I really remember the restraunts, shops, go-carts, jeep rides, horse rides and ski lift riding. And there was quite a bit of hiking also. I actually thought about going back next year. What about Eagle Nest Lake? Isn't it pretty close to Red River, maybe on the way to Red River? Dang it, now you've got my interest up. Man, I wish I was going this summer. Have fun.

While I was growing up, my family took yearly trips to Red River. We would fish the stream in town with rooster tails. I have caught some really nice browns and rainbows there. For the REAL fun, you need to take a guided trip up to one of the lakes up on top of the mountain. Those lakes are full of cutt-throat trout. These fish are plain HUGE compared to other trout. If I remember correctly we would use clear bobbers with something like a 2# leader with a fly of some kind. I don't remember, but the guide would always take care of everything except casting and reeling. I know these trips are pretty inexpensive also. My dad was a firefighter, and my mom was a teacher. It wasn't like we had a bunch of money to spend fishing.
Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity. Patton
