I am Kinda new to saltwater fishing and i need some tips on how, where, and when to catch larger fish (not whiting, sick of those) in the Houston area. I usually fish near Freeport TX. I don't have a boat, But I have had a lot of success catching whiting from the beach with cooked shrimp, and have caught small sharks on cut mullet and whiting. I am really tired of driving an hour to the beach and coming back dissapointed. I mainly want to catch redfish, Sea Trout, and anything that will put up a good fight.

fishAhoy Sean- welcome to TFF. I am sure you will get a wealth of info from the experts here. In my opinion and having fished around access road #5 located on Freeport side of San Luis in the surf; most of time to catch your trout, reds and occasional flounder use lures, live bait, gulp for example.
The cut bait, fresh dead shrimp, and squid is going to result from again my experience in whiting, croaker, ladyfish, sharks and the preverbial hardheads.
Good luck and again welcome aboard welcome

Everytime I'm down there we fish at San Luis Pass and Surfside Jetty. Not sure how far away from there you are but they are both decent...especially on High Tide.

Go to Surside Jetty. Walk till middle-end of the jetty. Live shrimp under an bobber for those Spanish Mack and Kings. Trout is another one.

Fish under the bottom for reds with cut bait or live bait if you can castnet them.
