Would it be better to trade off my boat for a new one when there is a year left on the motor warranty or once it expires? I was thinking it might fetch more if there was some warranty left, but the increased equity from making more payments might offset that. Opinions?

Unless you want to make payments the rest of your life it might not be a bad idea to keep it until it is paid off.

most of the depreciation takes place the first couple of years of ownernship. probably the same time u still have some warranty left. Just something to consider.
