New Friends,

It just so happens that I'm "an antique boat NUT" as well as a fisherman & just this morning I found a 1974 Ft Worth built TOP TENNER on a GREAT trailer & with a running 65 horse 1974 Rude for PEANUTS.
(I can resist anything except TEMPTATION.)

So, I've decided to restore it to look like the bass-boats of my mis-spent youth, as the little 40YO rig is in pretty nice shape. = Should work well for "perch-jerking", catfishing & running trotlines.

I'm looking for advice on repairing/replacing the stick-steering cable OR a source for same. - Does anyone KNOW which stick system that TOP TENNER boats used then?

I will also need to buy a throttle cable for the 65 horse Evinrude 3-banger.

Otherwise, the rig needs a "general cleaning up", the OB tuned, the water-pump impeller replaced & the hull polished/waxed.

NOTE: I'd also be interested in any HISTORICAL INFO, factory photos/brochures/period ads/etc., that anyone has, on TOP TENNER BOATS.
(Any such info will be archived in the Fiberglassics.com library.)

yours, satx

Naaaaaaa you aren't nutts just a little eccentric clap.

Try contacting Pearland Marine, they deal with a lot of vintage boat and motor parts and might be able to get you headed in the right direction........Oh and welcome to the forum.

Good luck. I believe this is the best of the stick steering systems.

fitter2259; HasBen; All,

THANKS for your input, Gents.

Texas has a long & RICH history as a mecca for boatbuilding, which needs collecting/preserving before it disappears forever.
(I have a list of well over a HUNDRED Texas builders.)

yours, satx

My first boat was a Top Tenner 16 foot stick steer. Silvertroll foot and hand controlled trolling motor and a curved line Lowrance paper graph.

150 tower of power J block Mercury that would go well over 60 if and when lake conditions allowed it. I bought the boat with the 150 and took it off a couple years later when I found a label on the steering cable that said "for motors not to exceed 35 horsepower".

George Charles made the top tenner in Fort Worth the original one was a low sided one with a fairly flat bottom. He then used a powercat angler hull owned by Charlie Hodges, to make a mold ,which he modified the nose of it to be blunt across the front. the powercat angler had a pointed nose. The original was one rough riding boat! The one made off of Charlie Hodges boat rode like a dream! Compared to the original!

I would agree with you , but then we would both be WRONG !!!!!

Allison1; BJH,

THANKS, Gents for your input.

To both: WHICH boat & year model did you own? Do you have actual photos of the boats?
and
Do you have any idea of how many different lengths/styles that Sports-boats (George Charles & employees), Inc. actually made?
(MOST of the old TX boat-builders had designs that were NEVER built and/or that only a prototype was ever built.)

NOTE: For about 3 years, I've tried (without success) to buy "TEXAS FAST ONE" that was the ONLY boat actually built (in late 1957) by PLEASANT BOATWORKS of Camp County, TX.

BJH: Do you happen to know when the change of hull style occurred?

Incidentally, the TOP TENNER that I've found is quite narrow in the beam for its length overall & at the waterline. I cannot imagine that hull NEEDING more than 50-75HP to move out SMARTLY.

THANKS AGAIN, satx
