Hey guys,

Not looking for a Shimano vs Abu vs Lews debate, but wondered if there was a reel out there that specialized in helping a beginner learn to throw a baitcaster. I have a boat full of curado's and know I can dial them down, but thought there might be something out there made for the kiddo's. Thanks for your thoughts.

I love centrifugal braking systems like what your Curado has, over magnetic. As they seem to control over-runs better as their function is dependent on spool speed. However, the external adjustments that a magnetic control offers may make it easier to adjust as kid get's better at thumb control and as wind changes.

Personally, I taught my wife using a Curado.

I agree with the centrifugal brake system. I gave my son a Citica, tightened it down, and said "here you go." FYI, larger diameter line is easier for your child to get backlashes out of. I recommend 15-20 lb fluorocarbon, and put a little KVD line conditioner on it.

Magnetic brakes are dependent on spool speed also. Remember that an aluminum spool is not even magnetic. (look up Eddy Currents) but I completely agree that centrifugal brake reels are easier to learn on because they deal better with jerky casting that happens when you are starting out.

Also start off with targets like stumps that are closer to aim at. That is what is most important to develop. Most people just want to launch it as far as they can and that is when they backlash the most.

Just tell the kid that each back lash he gets he has undo it himself to keep fishing. That'll teach him not to backlash it fast. Thats what my dad did to me. first back lash took me half the day to undo because I didn't know what I was doing. (Don't take my advice seriously, just joking about how my dad taught me haha)
