Years ago, like 25+ I used to go behind the dam and fish the tail race and catch big stripers. My question is that still good? Anybody been up there lately? Thanks, Warren

Lake is low and I don't think they have run generators in a while so I doubt it.

Might give it a try. Worse day fishing is better than the best day at the office with the boss breathing down your neck.

There was a game warden "sting" back around the late 1990's-early 2000's and they caught a bunch of people keeping undersized fish and over the limit and they were selling fish to restaurants. I think it was to the tune of $65,000 + in fines, etc. Right now it's tough fishing because there is no water being released. The best time to hit it is when they've been generating on a daily basis or they are letting water out because of the lake being high (not a chance of this happening for a long time). The bigger stripers that stage in deep pools way down river will feel the rising water and make their way up stream to the dam to gorge themselves on bait fish being pulled thru the dam/generators.

The best time is in the winter months of December/January/February and March AT NIGHT during FULL MOON phases. The moon must be rising to directly overhead for the best chance of nailing a big fish. Spend the money for an OK license - that was the best side of the Red River to walk down at night in the winter using BIG Redfin lures and cranking them in as slow as possible so they'd wake the surface, especially after the river level dropped when they stopped generating. The fish would come up to the dam when water was being generated and when they stopped the generation, the fish would hang around. This is IF they are on a daily generation schedule over a long period of time.

Many years ago I took the date data when they were caught from the Texas Top 50 striper list and loaded the date into an internet site to get the moon phase for the date of the catches. I don't know what I did with that data but big fish were also caught during the new moon phase between its rise and directly overhead. There also were s few that were caught between new moon and full moon and full moon and new moon. Overall, the full moon rise and ascend to overhead AT NIGHT was the best time for trophy stripers.

It has been very tough for me this year.. I have seen very little bait, no water has been run since December that I know of, other then the carp, buffalo, drum and a few cats I've seen it seems dead to be honest.. I've moved on to other places till we get some water moving again...

I miss the dink fest - the drama.. It's always a good time fishing even if the fish don't cooperate all the time.. And you right moon bring on the rains..
