Pacu.

Probably an involuntary refugee from someone's aquarium.

Pacu huh, that's pretty wild. People should not be releasing fish like that into lakes in the USA.

This thing was 20 pounds!

Yeah, definitely a pacu. I have 3 of them in my tanks at Cabela's. One was caught in Eagle Mountain. I do think it's odd that the wildlife officials didn't know what it was, considering this fish can be found in most pet stores. Not a good home aquarium fish, though. These things can get up to 40-50 lbs.

I have a one in a 200 gallon tank and they are great fish but get far too large for everything but the largest tanks. My 200 gallon is probably the very minimum you can get by with. Get used to seeing more of them in our lakes. They've become quite plentiful and cheap in recent years due to successful fish farming in South America. I think you can get about a 2-3" fish at Petsmart for about $7.
I agree- how wildlife officials can't identify it is beyond me. I'm also shocked at how this made front page on CNN.com?? Some dude catches a Pacu out of a lake in Texas and it makes front page news? Heck, the canals in Florida are probably loaded with these things!!!

It's not a doctored photo. It's a Pacu. Some species of Pacu have teeth like that in order to crush seeds that fall into the water, in addition to helping them bite through tough plants.

I believe the photo above may have been taken from video shot, as well.

Also, if you check the link posted in this thread by Smile And Nod, ( Possibly in the other threads too ) it takes you to a website all about pacu, where you can see another shot of their teeth.

They are the real deal.

Just ask Fishlady, after all, she works for an aquarium lol.

It's definately a Pacu.
If it were it's little cousin (Piranha) it would have definately got their attention.
Pacu have these kind of teeth...the piranha have very sharp, pointed teeth for tearing flesh.
This is exactly the reason they don't sell piranha's in the pet stores in the state of Texas , like they do in most northern states...they will survive in the water temps of Texas, obviously.

There was a 2 pounder caught out of Picken's Lake here in Sherman, back in May. I saw it, very strange looking to say the least.
