What do you guys think about different colored bullet weights? I got bored and painted some old lead weights I had rolling around in the bottom of my bag and was wondering if it is something that guys really lean on or is it just another gimmicky thing.

unpainted weights give you more feedback/sensitivity metal is hard, paint is soft.
I've painted weights to match soft plastics and haven't noticed a difference.

Good point. Didn't think about feedback.
Glad I asked before going paint crazy and doing every weight I had. Thanks.

I have fished Mexico many, many years where we catch 100 Bass per day. Customers bring painted weights all the time. It doesn't take them long to switch to unpainted, as the Bass like shiny weights. Even had a old gentleman show me this with lead weights. He would take a break once every few hours when we used lead and shine it up with a finger nail file to make it shiny again.

I thought about that when I was cleaning the weights last night. You can really shine them up. I wouldn't spend a bunch of time or money to paint or buy weights that are brown or green instead of unpainted but thought blood red and shiny may give some soft plastics a hard contrast to draw more attention. I guess it's going to be pretty hard to see if it makes a difference either way without having the ability to do a controlled experiment.

Yes. When you are only getting 5 bite per day it is hard to tell what works and what doesn't. In our lakes you may have just got into a few fish and caught some thanking what a great bait. Then the next time out, nothing. I have done all kinds of studies over the years in Mex. and have this down to the best 5 baits and colors. - Weights are unpainted Tungsten. - Plastics in Watermelon Red with tails only 1/2 inch Chart. - Plastics are Brush Hogs and Lizards - Cranks and Traps with at least half of the Chrome worn off down to the Bone color. I just take the Drimal and fix them before I go and clear coat with epoxy. - Spinner Bait skirts - Chart./Black stripe, White/Chart. stripe and Blue/Black stripe in living rubber. - Spinner Blades - Two set ups have worked best. These are heavy duty twisted line tie. 3/4 oz.; so for our lakes here just down size to 1/4 to 1/2 oz. with the #4 big Blade and small blade in same styles. 1. 4.5 Copper Willow / small blade in Gold #5 Indiana 2. 4.5 Gold Willow / small blade in Chart. diamond dusted Colo. - Weights are unpainted Tungsten. - Best Scents = Minnow for fast moving baits - Night Crawler for slow plastics like lizards and worms - Crayfish and Craylic for pitching brush hog/flipping baits.

I think when a bass wants to eat something its gonna get eaten. People use a painted weight go the bass "don't" see it but dip the tail yellow so they do see it. Lol Not to mention I c rig constantly and many, many times a fish will bite the damn weight as you drag it. They are not that smart.

For me in clear shallow water that gets a lot of shallow pressure the weight color or better yet an eyeball pattern on the weight can make a difference sometimes. For normal stained water or deeper than 6 ft doesn't matter. (It is kinda nuts that I use red line because it is the first color to disappear but I have red hooks on the trap to simulate bleeding)

I use both lead and painted bullet weights. Have not noticed a difference but my sample size isn't large enough
