If I have some frozen in bags, I take one bag and keep them on ice to keep them frozen, and I dont thaw them unless I am not able to catch any. If I can catch some shad, I use the fresh one and put the frozen ones back in the freezer when I get home. I only take the frozen shad to the lake to use as a back up if I'm not able to catch any. That way you will always have shad through the winter. There will be days that you cant find them, but you still need bait.

I always try to catch fresh shad. I'll take a few bags as well. They're frozen flat so I can take a few out and keep the rest in a cooler. I figure 3 bags of 12 Shad in each bag. Each shad makeing 3 baits. That's 108 baits fished from 8 rods at once. I can rebait 13 times on each pole. That's enough for me.

If you take an extra cooler you can keep the frozen ones on Ice with salt on the ice in one cooler and they won't thaw out in that cooler, and you can take them back home frozen if you need to, for next time!!!
