Depends on what your targeting. If you are going for big fish, then the set-up would probably be too awkward for casting a lure. And if you use a set-up that would allow you to cast a lure, then you might get spooled by a big ole red, shark, black drum, jack crevalle, etc... You probably need two setups. one w/ about a nine foot heavy duty rod and a reel that will hold about 200-300 yds of 20 lb line and a regular bass rod and reel for the lures w/ about 12 lb test.

yes it is possible to use lures off of pier and yes you can catch big fish orff of them. i have seen people use 12 foot rods on the t-heads for sharks and other fish. the sate record for tarpon was taken off of the old galveston fishing pier about 4 yrs ago and it was on a surf rod. it all depends on what is biting at the time. there are some good piers up and down the coast. the one we go to for right now is bob hall in corpus christi. we have caught mackeral over 30 inches seen tarpon taken off the pier huge pompano trout kingfish sharks the same in galveston too.have fun and when on the pier just ask peoople most are friendly enough and will be glad to help you

That....I am not sure about. I think the Gulp shrimp are pretty good, and I have heard good things about Russellures. I'm still learning about the lures. I have heard that alot of regular bass lures work well, like rat-l-traps and other crankbaits.
