I've used many types of slip floats.
The situations or conditions I use them in were: fast flow, when a normal float cannot be cast, drifting into an area without tangling, make a noise when pulled through the water, when I want to control the direction of my float or when I want to reach depth at a distance.

When I was in Illinois, we used slip floats for fishing jigs all the time. Just toss it out there and if there's any wave activity, let it sit. The waves will do all the work for ya. Pulled in limits of fat crappie that way. We used the super light Thill floats and 1/16 or lighter jigs. Those crappie just couldn't resist those slow falling jigs.

I use a slip float 95% of the time. I usually set it so that the bait is a few inches from the bottom, but if that does not work I slowly decrease the depth until I get bites.

The float, stopper and weight combination is very important. The best slip float is the Thill teardrop balsa float in the 7/8 inch size of the type that the line goes through the float(not the spring kind) . Unfortunately they are a little pricey. Eagle Claw sells a knock off that is almost as good. The bobber stopper I use is the Gizmo plastic stopper in the 4 pound size. The 7/8 inch float balances with a #3 split shot.

I buy the floats, stoppers and weights in packages of 50. The packages of 50 last me several seasons.

The bobber stopper must be rigged correctly to work the best. See the left-hand picture for the correct way to thread the stopper for up to 6 pound test line. For larger line the picture on the right works best.

I have a blog which discusses the way this opinionated old man goes about catching sunfish. Click here to see the blog.

I use them sometimes along with the balanced leech....very effective crappie rig.

The string type of bobber stop with all its faults is one reason that people have a bad experience with slip floats.

The one thing I notice is his terminal tackle. It is not necessary to use a swivel and leader with the small lines we use for sunfish. Tie the hook directly to the main line. Also, use a single split shot which exactly matches the float instead of a string of small shot. A #3 shot will balance a 7/8-inch balsa float. A #2 shot is correct for a one-inch diameter balsa float. The single shot will be much less likely to tangle when cast. When buying split shot be sure to get shot sized with the American system, which are larger than the European systems.

I really like watching a small (or large) cigar shaped float take that nose dive. For pan fishing I like the 4 for $1.00 Academy 2 inch floats. I also have used this knot for a bobber stop for the past 20 years and have found it my choice over the plastic ones. It slides through rod guides and winds back on the spinning reel spools just fine.

I use them all the time when fishing deeper water like the rocks along a dam or drop offs from a point. Allows you to fish multiple depths and keep out of snags. I have caught many huge sunnies, (as well as lots of bass and cats) off the dam at Boerne city lake from as deep as 20-25ft.

Gizmo stops are very secure but I prefer thread stops as I find they are easier to adjust and flow through the guides easier. When fishing deeper than 10ft I switch from a balsa float and split shots to a small weightless popping cork and a barrel weight stopped by a barrel swivel, then about an 18" leader under the swivel. It can be a little difficult setting the hook when fishing that deep but a good sized fish will usually give you enough time for a good hookup as long as you don't have to much slack line. Good luck.
