Been fishing Lewisville for the most part the last 3 years and have always caught predominantly white crappie. Creek fishing in the winter seams to be exclusively white crappie in Hickory creek. I have fished the west side of the lake for the most part since I launch out of Tower Bay. For every black crappie I have caught 8 - 10 white crappie. Also would catch a Mowhawk every so often. I was beginning to think that was just the way it was for the Lewisville.
The last half of this summer, I have been running over to the Little Elm side of the lake and catching black crappie for the most part with just a white here and there. This seams extremely strange to me. Has anyone else noticed this or is this a common thing that the two stay to them selves? Up until 3 years ago, I just thought a crappie was a crappie. Didn't realize there were two different types. Went back threw some old pictures last night and they were almost all of whites. This all seams kind of strange to me.

I fish Lewisville pretty regularly and this is what I have noticed. The further away you get from the dam the more whites you will catch and the opposite for the blacks. I have also noticed that I can go out and target a certain type. Whites tend to be on vertical structure more than blacks (Though you will catch blacks mixed in) and blacks tend to be on bottom brush/rocks (though you will catch whites mixed in as well). With that being said, the fish go in cycles. Some years there are more whites and some years there are more blacks. It does seem this year that the black crappie have really taken hold and I have caught more blacks than whites this year. As for the creeks, the whites go up most and there is mainly one creek that the blacks go up. Water clarity also plays a role in both of their locations. Blacks like clear water and white like more stained water.

I tend to fish the south side of the lake around the colony and the thing that I have noticed in the last couple of years is the increase of catching more black crappie... I used to catch nothing but white crappie Now it's almost half and half.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I wonder if Zebra Mussels are clearing the water and making it more likely that the black crappie will become more dominate in the lake?

Interesting to hear all the opinions. For me personally, I catch more black crappie than whites and it has been that way for a couple years now. In the warm months I fish brush and some submerged standing timber. In the winter I fish creeks and bridges. I bet my ratio is 70/30 the last two years. I cant put my finger on why its been more black crappie but Im not complaining. The lake is fishing as good now as it ever has been for me

15 to 20 years ago, if you caught a black on Lewisville, you called and let all your friends know. It was that infrequent. Now I would say that my catch is about 50/50, but I fish all over the lake. Steve, I do think that you're correct in saying that white crappie are dominant on the west side, and I think that's due to the lack of brushpiles (like Anthony said) on that side of the lake as opposed to the east side. But don't tell anyone about all the big whites that live on the west side rolleyes

We have them both on Granbury but the nod goes to the whites in population. I do notice that black crappie are more prevalent around rocks as well.
