Tried to get out on Christmas bay on the yak yesterday. I paddled out to am oyster reef my buddy told me about thinking I would get away from the skeeters. (Covered in deet and had a thermacell going behind my seat) They were still there. There must have been 100 on my kayak the rest were on me deep woods off and all. I wrapped a towel around my face and over my hat. They got in between my glasses and my eyes. I thought I had seen bad skeeters but never like this. I fished about an hour and a half at a couple places and called it without a bite. I threw everything and had live shrimp on a popping cork out the whole time. saw some trout moving but they would not eat. Paddled back, loaded up and decided to surf fish from surfside beach. I thought if I wade out in the surf there would be not mosquitoes. Oh they followed me out chest deep in the surf. Fished 2 hours with a couple small bikes on cut mullet (caught with my cast net) and dead shrimp. NOT EVEN A HARDHEAD! I still had my bait when I brought it in. I gave up. Loaded all my gear and my yak and drove 5.5 hours home. My eyes are swollen 1/2 closed and itchy from being bitten so many times around them and maybe in them I do not know. My hands and ankles where they got between my pant leg and shoes and socks are swollen and you cannot tell an individual bite from the next as there are so many. (I wore my sneakers as they bit through my water shoes) Again all this covered in deet. My wife just wanted to sit on the deck of the beach house we rented and read a book and relax. They were up there too, thick as flies on a roadkill opossum. This was the first time I ever took my kayak to the gulf and I had high hopes. Maybe next time? Looked at the weather and saw this on the weather forecast today. Miserable time for me. Hope you guys have better luck.

karstopo, glad it was not just me. I have been down there 15 times in the last 8 years. I have gone canoe camping trip on the Canada/Minnesota border in summer and thought that was bad. this took the cake.
Our eyes have finally started getting normal. My poor wife looks like a punched her. (She would whoop my butt if I ever did which in 27 years have never done)
We had to breathe with our mouths and keep our teeth closed otherwise you inhaled the little you know whats. I got bit on the inside of my lips. In my ears.
I heard Alaska is bad but i cannot see how it would be worse. It was grey due to the mosquitoes not the clouds. I thought rain would help maybe knock em out of the air. I could tell no difference.

Its the norm this time of year-Especially when there is so much rain around. Ive witnessed clouds of them out in the marshes, even in November when its cooler.

Picture details: That was after Harvey in Seadrift. Neighbors nephew helping clean up, and that was ten minutes after he'd been soaked down in spray. Made no difference, and they'd eat you through a pair of jeans.

Yes sir. That is how it was with us. I do not have enough experience fishing the gulf to know that all that rain and light winds made for nasty mosquito conditions. My poor wife, her eye is finally back to normal. I cleaned her SUV out over the weekend. There were little blood spots, wings and legs all over the arm and headrests and the bolsters on the seats where we smushed them as they fed on us as we drove home.
I thought we had it bad in north texas..........not even close. i will call myself blessed.

Dang, Pat! We thought we had bad skeeters in Rockport. Our RV park is still half-covered in water. Our driveway is the last dry one. We got about 12 inches in three days. Hiway 35 was closed for 2 days and portions of the 35 By-Pass were closed, too. Now, it's sunny, 90+ degrees, and 98% humidity. IslandJim

Jim:
Did water get up under my trailer? If so, did it wash anything away? Mosquitos must be really bad.
I'm feeling better. Will be down when it dries out a bit, maybe next week.

Randy: Hadn't been to your side, as the water has been really high. They pumped after the first couple of days, then it really rained, and they haven't pumped again. There's no water under your trailer now, but your front tote boxes have a debris line about 4" high. It doesn't look like anything floated away.
The drive on your side is underwater from your slab almost to the clubhouse. And, it's gone down a lot. Hwy 35 was closed for a couple of days, and sections of 35 by-pass are still closed. Hot, humid and very skeetery!
Did another sail line trip, to Steadman Island Saturday. Caught one gafftop and a whiting. High water.
See ya, Jim

They'll be back to normal annoying in October, just the two weeks after big rains then they calm down a little.
Going to fish on the coast? Skeets are just part of the deal, like poot mud and hardheads.
