I was in Academy last weekend and ran across a Magellan Origin kayak, which only showed up on Academy's website a few days ago. I can't find any information about it, but it looks like it may be a re-branded Perception Pescador, but at the same price and features as the Pescador I struggle to understand why someone one buy one over the other. Does anyone have any information about this kayak? I can't find anything, anywhere about it. Thanks

Magellan Origin

Perception Pescador

Yeah I saw that too, then a day or two later at a different academy I saw it next to a new 10 foot pescador, (not the hi seat pro model) and they had the old model 10 ft pescadors on clearance. I think I was at the Lewisville store.

I have my neighbor's West Marine Pompano 12 under my trailer. It also is a Perception Pescador 12 copy, just a different label. Same great-paddling hull, same very uncomfortable seat.

My local Academy has a Pescador 12, but it's $549. Sale price is usually $499. All of them are great bang-for-the-buck kayaks. Maybe Academy pays less for kayaks with their brand name on the side.

It's amazing that this hull has been in production for so many years, first called a Wilderness Tarpon 120 until 2008, then Pescador and now other names. I love my Pescador 12. Add a good seat, an anchor trolley, a couple more rod holders, and, maybe a rudder, a good paddle, and you've got a fast, fishing machine for $700 or less.

ROI has been met on those molds... smile Sad to hear the bad seats still remain. A sore back = less time spent on the water... even less time one wants to go.

I had a 2008 WS Ride 135 I sold several years back and I regretted it because I really liked that kayak.
I noticed the hull design was re-branded a few years back, and it's the same kayak, but I haven't seen any around, or remember what was the brand.

A good seat cushion, and paddling over to the shallows or bank and stretch your legs now and then works wonders. thumb

The Tarpon 120 was released for 2003 and when WS did the redesign for 2009 the mold moved under the Perception label (and subsequently licensed to other companies such as West Marine) where it's been produced unmodified ever since. Well, in 2007 they added a padded seat bottom and back.

Islander Kayaks had both the original The Ride (1995 - 2006) and the first version of the Ride 135 (2007-2011 model) after WS completed the redesign; both versions were called the Strike Angler. I thought of them as the European branch of Confluence Watersports, but I'm not sure there's an official affiliation now that WS was bought out in 2014.

Neumie: Hi, Josh! Did you see the '07 "The Ride" 135 on Corpus Craigslist a day or two back? Pretty nice yak with seat, rudder, and extras for $550. Every time I see one of the one-hole 135's I think about you. Did you buy it?

That Islander Strike, (blue one) is the kayak......Not the fastest kayak out there, but super stable hull design......This was mine!

Man, not that I need a 5th kayak, but I do have a special place in my heart for those first gen Rides. That one on Craigslist is a 2003 - 2006 model. Also, I bet the owner casts left handed too.

The second gen Ride is a crazy stable kayak, but also extremely slow on the water. I used to be able to stand on the gunnel and make it tilt completely on its freeboard.

When they designed the 2nd Gen ride I think the hull actually creates a suction cup effect and it also causes it to slow down, with very little glide if any at all.
I always felt safe, and never felt that I would turtle.
You would actually have to fall off of it, rather than turtle the thing...I also used scupper plugs so that helped the suction cup effect in my opinion.
That keel would let it track like an arrow without a rudder...Turns not so much!
