Ive always wanted to catch an alligator gar, but I live in Kerrville, where there isnt any in the upper Guad. How far away is the closest lake or river to have a good chance at landing a decent gar? I have a small jon boat if that helps... i dont mind driving, but Id like to find someone semi close to me that could produce an alligator gar. Plenty of longnose here, but no gators. Choke canyon is about two hours from me, but I have no idea of how to fish it.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

im no expert but it seems you have to go south/south east. frio river by choke canyon is the closest for me im in s.a. i have not tried for one yet. hopefully this summer. ive heard theyre there in choke but not in very high numbers. but again thats hear say. i think the trinity river is the best bet but that is a good drive.

I have landed a couple ("jumped" a whole bunch, tough little buggers) from the Guadalupe just below Gonzalez. Don't think that that is any closer to you than Choke though.

Catcrap, It's not against the law to say one's peace on a forum, only to harass someone who is Angling. He wasn't angling. He wasn't even talking about angling. He was hunting, and this whole Carp/rough fish section is off limits to discussion of bow hunting, whether for fish or terrestrials.

The man was nice enough to come in here and give away some information on where to go catch some big fish. Be grateful that someone was willing to be helpful and give some info. I don't think many of us appreciate the mentioning of what he did at one point, but at least be grateful for the info. Just my .015

Agreed.

Killing a decades old fish just to satisfy your own ego is sad. Compensating even perhaps

Geez, lay off the guy. He is the only one to offer any helpful advice. Don't believe the biased propaganda that these fish are "threatened". If you spend enough time on the river, you'll see what i mean. I saw 20 fish over 6 foot in a 100 yard stretch of river last summer in one day. And if you hit the river around the spawn, its not uncommon to see 100+ 4 ft juveniles in a day. As long as people stick to their one per day limit, it is near impossible to put a dent in the population. Fellow sportsman need to stop quarelling amongst ourselfs or we stand no chance against the "antis"
