I was just going through some fishing stuff and I had idea. I have a 8' 2pc surf-rod and wondered if it would be worth bringing to get a little more distance throwing jigs on my upcoming 24hr trip?

Well, I am certainly no expert on this subject but for me a longer rod doesn't necessarily translate into greater distance casting topwaters.

For reasons unknown I can cast topwaters with my conventional mounted on a 6'6" jigging rod further than I can cast them with my spinner that is mounted on a 7' popping rod.

I would think you would want to try it out at home first just to see. I'm not a big fan of anything 2-pc., but that's just me.

Im going on a head boat so it would be an underhand flick more than a cast

Most head boats allow overhead casting. Which boat are you going on? The only one I can think of that doesn't allow casting is the Captain John.

8' is a little excessive for a Texas partyboat - you won't have enough room behind to get casting leverage. My suggestion would be a 6' to 6-1/2' rod for casting.

Have used my OTI 7 1/2' with no issues on the Scat Cat in Port A! Not sure about the other boats.

Probably gonna need more than 4oz, especially if the current is strong. One trip on the Big E, had to use a 16oz diamond jig to get it down to where the fish were. That was not fun. Knife jigs are slimmer and get down quicker also. Use glow pink or glow green Benthos jigs.

Last year I was doing better most on the boat and never had anything over 6 oz hit, caught a couple on 2oz glow striper jigs. But I do carry up to 9oz. This isn't a floated trip. Just a 24hr run to Falcon. I think its around 400ft but I could be wrong.
