I have read different things about this fish, all referring to a trout or salmon or steelhead. Do you know the difference between all of these?

Not any kind of pacific salmon, or steelhead. Not the greatest pic to I.d. Gum line appears to a plankton, filter feeder type of salmonoid.

All are in the salmonidae family. There are several subfamilies. All of these fall in the subfamily of Salmoninae. Then there are some that are a sub subfamily groups such as Salmo, which include the Char family. aka Brook Trout, Lake Trout. Then there is the sub subfamily groups of more common Salmo, which include the Brown Trout & Atlantic Salmon. Then there is the Oncorhynchus subspecies that has all of the Cuttthroat species, Chinook & Coho Salmon. Recent lab analysis has concluded that the Rainbow Trout is more along this category from what had been previously thought in line with the Pacific Salmon.
