I have heard conflicting times as to when the spring black drum spawn starts and what they mainly like to bite on
thoughts? ideas? advice? comments?

I don't normally target them but I've caught lots of them from Feb to May/early June.
Live or fresh dead shrimp has always been best for me.

Live or fresh dead shrimp has always been best for me. Ditto...almost. I toss them back but they also like cut mullet. ( or just about anything nasty)

wow I thought that there would be so much dislike for black drum
I think they are a very tasty fish when cooked right.
the smaller ones 15"-25" fillet and make for good fry
and the larger ones above 25" are outstanding on the grill
as long as they dont have worms

Yeah, some of us are fish snobs...lol ! I will admit to having eaten a couple, though.

Black drum are my favorite...the schoolies are already hitting fresh peeled shrimp in the humble and ICW in corpus..the big uglies 40+" range...are hitting the half crab and sea lice

.
I'll take a 4 or 5 pound black drum fileted with the skin on and cooked on the grill half shell over a redfish any day.

Oh and I am a Cajun born and raised in good ole' Slidell, LA. I personally love black drum. Best way to prepare it is fillet it but leave the scales on. rub over with Tony Chacheres and lemon butter and grill until done. Great tasting fish as long as you can get one without worms in the meat.

I like Black Drum up to about 25" filleted and fried. It good lemon pepper in my corn meal. And deep fried in oil. They put up a good fight.

I agree, the fight is fantastic!!! The meat is delicious and I'm not a Cajun, which shouldn't matter anyway. The way I cook 'em you wouldn't be able to tell if it was a red or black or sheephead. I'd bet on it too!
