I bought a Lightning Rod 7' Medium Light rod for Crankbaiting....

What other applications could I use this rod?

Top water maybe?

First; you got yourself a good rod. I used to buy a Berkeley Lightning Rod and a Shimano reel each time I came from Saudia Arabia. I have a closet; not full; but near it.

That 7 footer is a good all-around rod to use as you wish. I fish mine in both salt and sweet water with no problems. Experiment with it and find the 'sweet' spot. It should serve you well. JMHO C2

Good to know Charlie.

I was hoping in addition to using it for cranks, I could also use it for topwater and lipless cranks. Anything with a treble hook on it.

This has to last before I get my new falcon rod/lews reel set up next month.

Would be good for weightless worms toO but that would be about it as well in addition to using it for cranks! I grew up on lightning rods when I first started learning to use a baitcaster. They are good rods and should hold you over just fine! i personally bought a Berkley Amp 7' meduim action that I use for my cranks. I like the split grip.

Also wanted to add that I use a Falcon BuCoo 7' Medium almost exclusively for wieghtless worms/ anything light and it works great! And surprisingly has tons of backbone still! I love that Falcon rod!

One of the best values around on an inexpensive rod. I had an old favorite burn up in the shop back in April. Of all the higher dollar rods that burnt this is the one that really made me the saddest as they do not make that rod anymore. It was a 6-6 medium with the EVA grip on the lower part of the handle. I used it for Cranks mostly but would throw a Trick work great.
'

Good all around rods.

You should have got a med you can cover more size of baits that med light will be good for smaller traps and cranksas for top waters I think it will be tough to work a spook or popper with the weak backbone

Great rod to learn to fish a Carolina rig in heavy cover. Spool you up some 10 pound big game a 3/8th weight with a 3/0 hook and a Carolina keeper and get after it. You will be amazed at how well you will do. Its all about the feel

It's like trying to whip a bear with a switch!

Rod will work great with small cranks and small topwaters.

I sure have taught many a angler how to carliona rig with rods like posted. If a angler just starting out wants to get the feel of fishing diifferent structure going light is the best tool.

I agree with bruce, its just like learning how to throw a baitcast reel. The lighter the line u spool up, the less likely u will backlash due to less resistance on the line guide and guides on the rod. Lighter line will bw more sensitive and easier to detect strikes with, but after u learn what to feel for, spool up with heavier mono or fluoro. Just my 2 cents.

Have a lightning rod from 1990-92. Actually the 7 med/ heavy is quite sensitive

I agree 100% with you, Coast Tackle Service. That old 6'6" medium is one fine rod, I caught many a lunker on those. I still have a few and even though I mostly fish Dobyns now I am not getting rid of those. Btw, I used them mostly for T-rigs, spinners and buzzbaits.

I have a newer lighting rod that I bought for an inexpensive rig and have no complaints. For anyone that remebers I still have a a 5'6" Berkley Stinger with an EVA pistol grip. I bought that one back in 1991 and still use it once in a while. I have probably reeled in 1000 fish on that thing and paid less than $20 for it. Berkley makes some durable gear!!!

I would have no problem fishing a medium light rod for top waters. I think the softer tip will help with the action on something like a popper...on the other hand, I have never used one for carolina rigging. not saying it doesnt work, just wouldnt be my choice. I do prefer a shorter rod though for topwater baits...only because my rod tip will hit the water while I'm working it. good buy...enjoy
