I use a old North East spinning rod and an old Shimano spinning reel to fish this techinque with so there is no horsing the fish to the boat. This fish jumped outa the water three times and pulled out a lot of drag. At one point I even had to unhook the anchor rope and let the fish pull the boat around.
As you can see in the videos the fish was gassed but was still flapping her gills. She wasn't outa the water for much longer than 2 minutes.
After I put her back in the water I tried to tap her with my foot to let her know she was free and when I missed I used my rod tip. She then blasted off. No harm, no foul.
Running water through her gills would have required me to hold her and run the boat so I wouldn't back flush her by a back and forth motion. I didn't want to do that.
