I recently purchased a new 06 dodge cummins, I have been having a problem and would like to know if anyone else has been having troubles with this issue. Every now and again (like every 10-20) start-ups, when i go to start my truck it just turns over and does not start. THen i just leave the key on and try to start it again and it will fire up. Now this could happen at anytime, like hot, or cold either one. I know its under warranty but i hate taking something to the dealer and its not happening all the time. So i was just wondering if anyone else had this problem before i took it in.

does the truck have glow plugs in it? some do and some do not. If it does it may have something to do with the Glow plugs not warming up completly. I do not know anything about dodge but my dad has a ford 7.3L and had this problem. after taking it in that is what they said.

There are no glow plugs in a Cummins, but they do have an air intake heater which is only used when the ambient air temp. is below 50 deg. Evan if the heater does fail, the truck should have in problem starting up in our mild winters. I have an '03 Dodge that sometimes acts the same way your describing, after about 2 seconds of turning the engie over, she'll blow a puff of black somke and be on her way. A normal start up (in mine) is the engine will turn over for maybe 1 second and not smoke when it dose start. Your problem may be ignition related, so I would at least go see if is a problem.

And another http://dodgeram.info/tsb/2006/14-003-06.htmMy 06 is gas & I have extended crank at times. I remember when I brought it in for a recall 7 mentioned it they told me there was a re-program for the diesel.

I've got an '06 and occasionally have the same issue where there are extended cranking revolutions. There have been a couple of times that it did not start, turned the key off and then re-started fine. Have not had it into the dealer yet.

WormFlipper,
I just recently also bought an 06 with a Cummins. As this was my first diesel purchase, I had a friend who has had several of these tell me that when you go to start the motor, turn the key (2 clicks), wait about 2-3 seconds, and then start the motor. This is how I have been running, and I have not had a single issue.

One other thing I forgot to mention. Since it is really cold right now, when you turn your key (2 clicks) and wait, if you see the little "curly q" light turn on, wait to crank the motor until it shuts off. This is the light that tells you that the heater grids are warming up. You will hear like a small generator sound, and when the grid warms up and the light shuts off, the generator sound will change pitch. Then you can start the motor. I bought my '06 at the end of September, and it now has about 10,000 miles on it with no issues.

I took it to the deal and they "flashed" the PCM on my truck and i havent had a problem with it since. so i guess it fixed the problem.

Yea, you gotta let the heater grid warm up by turning the key to the first click and letting it sit for 10 seconds or so. If it is real cold, you have to do this several times.

Here in Texas your Dodge should start in anything above 10 degrees without the grid heater cycling. They run rough and blow huge white smoke clouds but they should start. Not recommended.
Cycling the grid heater will heat the intake air enough that the engine will fire without the smoke or rough running. The grid heater is still running after you start the engine when cold and will stay on until your engine is warm enough to run properly by itself. To see when your grid heater is on look at you battery guage. The grid heater uses huge amounts of amps and your indicated battery voltage will be low. When it turns off your battery guage should quickly move back to just right of center on the guage. In the morning you can see your headlights get brighter when the heater turns off.

Your key has to communicate with your truck's computer. There maybe a break in that communication and your truck will not start. I have seen this once before..
