Port Aransas area April 1-10

Port Aransas area April 1-10 - 02/02/16 02:13 AM

I will be fishing the Port A/Aransas Pass area via kayak and I was curious as to what I should expect. The main areas I plan on fishing to start are the Lighthouse Lakes area and the Brown and Root flats. Will the reds be schooled up and active? What are the trout doing this time of year? Should I cast net for mullet? Is topwater a viable option at this time of the year? I appreciate any input I get. I have never fished the salt so early in the spring. Thank you very much!

April in Port A is often windy, the backside of Mustang Island is a good, safe place that's not as crowded as the lighthouse lakes and AP area. Two good spots to launch are at Wilsons Cut which you head south out of Port A on 361 and take a right at the Sea Gull Condominiums. If you keep going south on 361, right before you hit the Corpus Christi Pass bridge take a right and that area is called Deadmans Hole. Both usually hold reds and trout, Deadmans has a lot of flounder to.

Yep - lotsa places to catch fish and get out of the wind wade fishing or by kayak.

April is one of my favorite months of the year to fish for big trout !!!

Thanks Grinder. A question on topwaters-big or small? I know trophy specks prefer large mullet as their primary food source, but is it a wise idea to match the hatch? From what I understand, the bait fish and shrimp are small this time of year, and I've bought some downsized lures. Would you fish with larger or smaller lures this time of year? Thanks!

Lighthouse Lakes should be pretty good in April if the tides don't get too low and the winds lay down.

I would also recommend Wilson's cut and fishing in the flats behind Shamrock cove. Reds will be all back through there in April, and you should be able to find some trout in the deeper parts or some big ones up in the shallows. Just be careful leaving valuable things in your truck when you park at Wilsons. I have heard of break ins. No one I personally know has been broken into over there but I've read about it before.
For kayak accessible I would also try drifting the flats behinds steadman's reef or wading the reef itself.
We catch a lot of good trout that time of year in Port A wading with topwaters. My go to is the Bone Super Spook Jr.
I also am pretty sure there is a company in rockport that will shuttle you and your kayak across the bay to fish the san jose back lakes.

These are good tips...i fish wilsons every summer and always catch something. Do yourself a favor and take some dead shrimp. If the reds/trout arent cooperating, you can fish the cut itself for black drum and flounder. Also, look up bird island basin off PINS...if not too windy it is a cool spot!

And yes...bone spook jr, mirror lures, redfish magic, and plastics on lighter jigheads wont do you wrong in there.

I have a guided trip in Port A on Friday, but I would like to wade somewhere on Thurs when I get into town. Somewhere I can park my truck and slip into the water and throw some artificial. Is that possible at Wilson's Cut or is the drop off too much? Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

Go to the kayak trail at Aransas Pass next to the community pool. Good paddling through black mangroves and interesting stuff. Caught redfish within sight of the launch. Seen immature triple tails in the mangroves and turtlegrass. Lots of flounder.
