San Luis Pass camping trip

A couple of buddies and I are planning a camping/fishing trip at San Luis pass (Galveston side). I saw some really bad stuff on other forums about it being illegal, and that there are a lot of mugging and people getting robbed down there at night. Is it legal to camp? Is it safe to camp there? What other stuff do I need to know before attempting to go? I just want to stay safe. Also, can I camp on the non Galveston (west) side of the pass (closer to Freeport)? Is it any different than the Galveston side? Thanks.

The bride and I have spent many weekends in the RV park at the Brazoria County Park on the Freeport side of the pass. Often on weekends there is a lot of loud activity all night long; loud trucks revving and racing on the beach, loud "music", shouting and shrieking. Some nights our RV would vibrate all night from the loud, thumping bass that the soon-to-be-deaf are so fond of sharing with the rest of the world. I would guess that you would be better off camping down the beach from the pass if you want your property safe and to be able to have some peace and quiet.

We camped there a month or so ago, no problems. I've slept in my truck a few times over the summer with no problems.

I'd bet that the noisy crowd is probably a lot less this time of the year.

Be sure you set up camp accounting for the tides. We had to move last month after the extremely high tide put us under water about 10:00 pm. Take plenty of water, food, and of course baby wipes! Good flash lights, area lights if you have 'em, and backup batteries. Carry some heavy wood, stumps or big logs to keep the fire going all night. First aid kit, basic tools, cast net, bait bucket, backup tackle, shovel, tow strap, etc..

If you camp on the Freeport side, the way the surf has been coming in you'll be getting blasted by the waves and wind, and the water there is shallow way out unless you're on the bay side. Galveston side has some deeper water 50' off the bank and the wind at your back if it's out of the N or NE.

I've never heard of any muggings or anything like that there. It wouldn't turn out well if someone tried that with anyone in my crowd.

How's the sand getting there, can a two wheel drive make it?

Sounds like fun but bring along some protection. I always take mine wherever I go camping.

I've only been there when it's dry, and the sand there can get pretty soft. But I'll let others comment for current conditions.

A month ago it was fine, I imagine with all the rain that it's ok. We had a guy in a BMW out there make it just fine. If you have any question about going through any water, get out and walk it first.

Take a shovel if you dont have 4wd.

Camping on the Galveston side is not allowed technically. There are signs on most beach accesses with this information. However, I haven't heard about the cops enforcing that rule/law in a while. Camping is not prohibited on the Freeport side.

You shouldn't have issues with noisy neighbors this time of the year on either side. It's already too cold for them

If you camp at the State Park in Galveston, just 10 minutes from San Luis Pass, you can enjoy peace and quiet. Camp at Surfside and you never know. I have heard horror stories but have not had any bad experiences.
