biting yellow flies - 10/01/15 01:22 AM

9-29-15 was my 2nd time at Bryan Beach/Freeport. my 1st time encountering yellow flies. it was sunny when we got there and while I was unloading our fishing gear and getting everything setup, these yellow flies about 3/8" long started biting me. the bites hurt, and really itchy. most of the bites were on my right foot. this morning my right foot was swollen, very itchy and red. had to put ice, and benadryl and hydrocortizone every few hours.

i've fished Sea Rim, High Island, SLP, Surfside, and have never see or been bit by these yellow flies.

Haha! I got mauled by them on different beach around that same timeframe. Applying insect repellent every 30 minutes kept them off of me. I do remember seeing these same flies two years ago when the seaweed was really bad but I haven't seen them since. I was just happy the horse flies were gone. They got me and my children really bad a few weeks before.

Cookies - especially oatmeal cookies will attract these flys. Pack and plan accordingly.
