Any idea what kind of fish this is? - 09/05/17 10:57 PM

Now this wasn't caught here, my dads lives on Grand Cayman and his buddy caught it. No one there knows what it is and they sent it off to a biologist in Florida. Weighed 15 pounds and was caught at about 2400', any of y'all ever seen one?

I gather that the fish was longer than it appears in the photo? Looks like the camera view is at an angle, rather than directly over the fish.

Agree, it's some kind of snake mackerel.

Oilfish/Escolar, or some relative would be my guess.

Did they eat it?

Edit: This is pretty close.

Nope. Grew up in the coast up north and caught bluefish all the time, this definitely isn't one.

Nope they didn't eat it they asked around on the island and no one knew what it was, they contacted a few biologist and they weren't even sure. They asked them to ship it off to their lab to get a better look.

Probably edible, but with high amounts of indigestible fat that can cause ... well ... gastrointestinal distress.

I think you may be right about it being a domine, it's just odd they caught one so deep when they normally are way shallower.

Yup lite-liner and I were on a head boat that caught one that was some kind of body record for a few weeks one time. Supposed to be good sushi but in moderation. To much will give you the quick step flush_2

They just got word back from the lab that the DNA doesn't match any known species of fish. They have no clue what it is still, but it's a world record at 15.1 pounds.

It does look a lot like some of the fish y'all have posted I agreed it might be a domine, but it was caught several times deeper than they are known to swim. Guess we will have to see what they decide to call it.

Huh. Very cool.

I'm sure they can tell what it's related to by DNA; I'm nearly certain it's a snake mackerel of some sort.

I don't know the way they talked its something completely different from anything on record. I'm sure they'll keep researching it though.

Well, there's several species of snake mackerels with only one known species in a given genus. Same can be said for other deep water species, like sablefish.

if it's a new species, you get to see your name in latin!
that is very cool!
