Pier Fishing - 08/20/15 06:46 PM

Ok guys I need advice. I know how to fish in the fresh water but saltwater experience is very limited. I went to Galveston this past weekend and tore up the 3 inch long catfish. Must have caught 40 of those bastards. We didn't catch anything bigger than that which was a disappointment.

I'm going to Port A at the end of September and will be fishing off of the Pier and maybe do a party boat charter. Can you guys give me any advice on what fish I should be targeting when fishing off of the pier in late September? Also, rig configurations would help.

Normally I'm taking 2 of my big catfish poles with 30-45 lb test on an Abu Garcia 6500C. I also take a small pole to catch bait fish with but this last time only yielded tiny catfish.

Also, if you have a recommendation on a good charter in Port A or a good fishing spot feel free to let me know.

Thanks guys.

September starts the annual mullet migration near the beach. There will be all kinds of fish chasing them. Bull reds, shark, mackerel, specks and trash fish. Tie on a fish finder rig with either whole or cut mullet and cast it out and wait. September is a hot time to be fishing in the Gulf. Your gear looks capable of doing the job. You can get away with lower lb test if you want to get the bait out further and also give you some wiggle room in case something starts pulling drag. Its not fun being spooled. Good Luck
