TOO November Tuna Trip - 06/19/14 05:10 AM

I feel like the other thread is just the October group. Where are the other 23 November people? I'd like to know a little about some of you before the trip. This is my first floater trip and I have a fair amount of offshore experience but this is a completely new adventure. Is anyone else on this trip active on here?

November is a better time for tuna then Oct. I would pick the Nov time in a heartbeat.

Normally that is the case for sure. But it wasn't the case last year. I know of at least three floater trips in October last year from different docks that were better than any November trip. We're hoping the trend continues.

Slightly darker moon on the Oct. date .... if that really matters.

Most of us would have liked to do both trips but we don't own our own trailer company so we were faced with a choice. Fishing aside .... the October date just fit better for me so I decided to take the chance.

And did I mention that there will be stuffed pork and bacon wrapped dove breasts on the October trip? food

We'll see ........ bannana2

woop! woop!

for the record,
there will probably, might kinda be something like, probably a reasonably passable facsimile of maybe 6 or 7 thinly-bacon wrapped belly-shot dove breasts

.....maybe..........

Re: TOO November Tuna Trip - 06/28/14 01:39 PM

that being said that means they need to learn how to choot em in the head with the 1st 15 shells and quit wasting that meat !! slinger

Re: TOO November Tuna Trip - 06/29/14 09:26 PM

Thanks for the compliment bobby, but I aint that good. If I get 5-6 birds per box I feel pretty good.
Jim, that's funny cause I saw no complaining in the exactly 42 minutes
it took for you and everyone else to consume 125 dove breasts, leaving me exactly 3 for all my hard cookin' & deadeye shootin' last year.

just make sure someone brings plenty of bacon, jalepeno's & toothpicks!
they chose sunflowers in one spot & maize in the other this year........ banana

Outlet bait and tackle has 10 oz Williams speed jigs for $3.60 each. It's in the 56% off truckload sale. Max 5 per each color. Also they have 9" storm swimbaits in there in Sardine color.

Re: TOO November Tuna Trip - 07/05/14 09:05 PM

Ditkarulz, I'll be on the Nov trip. I have not been on a tuna trip in several years but fished and chartermastered on a couple of the GEM trips on 360tuna, fished some private trips off the TX coast, and a couple with 2cool on the Big E when it was around. I fish offshore regularly with a buddy who has a boat in Surfside. I sold all my high end tackle during a divorce and am trying to gather enough yft quality stuff to start going again from time to time. I'm located in St. Paul near Collin Park. Looking forward to meeting everybody and seeing a few familiar faces again.

Re: TOO November Tuna Trip - 07/07/14 03:17 AM

I'm on the October and November trips, I haven't been offshore in three years but this is the year for me to hit it hard again. My favorite time to fish YFT is Halloween!! Darn good trips at that time.

I used to fish with the Texas Allcoast Gang on the TAG trips, and then later the offshoot, the Corpus Christi Tuna Heads. Fished the Dolphin, Pelican, Gulf Eagle, Kingfisher, Scat Cat, the Big E when it was around and fished the GEM trip on the Akela, back in the day.

Miss the whitewater of a YFT crashing a topwater lure out in the dark.

Looking forward to fishing with everyone.

Re: TOO November Tuna Trip - 07/07/14 03:50 AM

What should I expect for the live/dead bait situation. Will there be flats of sardine and squid to start with before the first few "chunk" fish hit the deck? I've been on several DSH 24hr trips and they normally have a 55 gal drum for livies, will this trip most likely have something set up also? I know a few guys have been talking about catching bait the night before.

Re: TOO November Tuna Trip - 07/07/14 06:03 AM

Blackfin will hit iron jigs really well. Start with jigging and add 5-10 black fins to the bait box quickly.

Iron jig huh???? You sure you ain't from Californ-I-A? I figured Skeeter was a good ole redneck name.... now you have me wondering.......

Re: TOO November Tuna Trip - 07/07/14 11:14 AM

with this trip s focus on tuna the live well will be packed with ice if we limit early then we will look for bait and bottom fish or at least this is how it worked in years past

Tom ..... so glad you are going. Just getting to fish elbow to elbow with the likes of Charlie Williams is worth the trip.

On the downside .... from the BET YOU DIDN'T KNOW department .... When you haven't been out and caught a YFT in three years or more there is a reorientation that requires you to eat the heart of your nights first Yellowfin. You might pass this along to Bert as well. rolleyes

It's going to be a great time.

I'd rather fish with these guys than the finest folks in the land.

Lol, Tom can have mine!

Re: TOO November Tuna Trip - 07/08/14 12:19 AM

Actually, I anticipated this and have decided to pre-qualify for my recertification by catching a hardhead at my dock, and then cutting out the heart and eating it here. Perfectly legitimate I am told, plus that will free up more time for fishing on the trip.

If I can get pictures of me eating the hardhead heart, I'll post them.

Actually Tom that doesn't count I'm afraid.

But I have some great news for you and Bert. You're in luck! I pleaded your case with the "committee" and they have come up with a way to exclude you guys from heart eating and exempt you from it. Just a simple stipulation.

Bring 30 Ribeyes and you're good to go! food

Re: TOO November Tuna Trip - 07/08/14 12:59 AM

One of the guys on my board of directors works for TPWD, he told me the precertifying by eating the heart of a hardhead was perfectly acceptable. He signs my paycheck, so I'm gonna believe him.

Yes on squid and sardines. They use a trash can for a live well. They used to use one of the fish boxes.

Re: TOO November Tuna Trip - 07/18/14 12:44 PM

How far out do you need to throw out a popper or swimbait to have decent chance to hookup. I was playing around at the neighborhood pond with a new rig and no matter what I tried it seemed 30-40 yards was the max I could lob a Tuna Hunter Jr. Will that work or do I need to start practicing my form more before the trip?

I'd practice the form a little more. A Tuna Hunter, Jr. is a little lighter and won't travel as far as say a Maguroni or other pencil lures but 40 yards may get some strikes but not as many as 50 - 60 yards.

Re: TOO November Tuna Trip - 07/18/14 05:01 PM

After a little more looking into it maybe I have the leader wrong. Right now I have about 15' of 80lb flouro. I'll try shortening it by about half and switching to mono.

I'm not gonna lie I was also hoping on the longshot of a P'ed off 8-10lb largemouth would hit it.
Posted By: trlrman

Re: TOO November Tuna Trip - 07/18/14 05:17 PM

try 2ft of the floro and a swivel
Posted By: SkeeterRonnie

Re: TOO November Tuna Trip - 07/21/14 03:58 AM

Not bad for a jr. Try a full size and you should be hitting 60 yards
