New boat captain

I am going to be a boat captain this year for my friends two boys. This is gonna be our first year and don't really know what to expect. Does anyone have any advice or pointers to get us headed in the right direction and any other important things we need to know. We have already registered just want to make sure we do what's needed. Thank you very much in advance

A few things that get mentioned all the time.

Read all the rules , if you have questions ask.

Be respectful towards other anglers and they will reciprocate

Have fun and make lots of memories. It is a very competitive sport, but it can also be very rewarding just being on the water and learning the ins and outs of competition.

Boat ramps - turn off your headlights,have boat ready before you actually get on the ramp,be as quick as possible but take your time to do it right.
Read the rules- then read them again. They've made some changes this year.
Have the boys take responsibility for certain things but double check to make sure they handle them.
Keep your flight info in the boat.
Fish - read the rules concerning how the weigh-in works. Do not carry your fish up to weigh in a non-THSBA bag. Watch the line and send your boys to wait on a bag. TEACH them proper fish care and how to release them after they have weighed.
Have fun and don't sweat the small stuff- and it's all small stuff.

Thanks y'all for the info. The boys and I also fish in a bass club in town and have fished many tournaments before so we know fishing etiquette. I'm sure we will figure things out when the time comes just don't wanna show up in the dark.

Encourage the boys do as much research as they can about the lake and pick the spots. On tournament day, we are just drivers, not guides.

Some of these kids are just getting into fishing to the point that they do not even know how to cast. They are just learning how to do the mechanics of fishing and are no where near the point of knowing how to locate fish. If you take the approach of just being a driver with kids that are just starting to fish they will likely lose interest in bass fishing all together. Captains are not just drivers. Captains are teachers, coaches, and even mentors.

Maybe, I was too harsh. Captains shouldn't sit silent all day. There is always time for tips, suggestions, and positive comments. However, captains do the kids a disservice in the long run if they don't take the kids out in advance to learn the lakes, and then show up on tournament day telling them what to throw, where, and for how long.

Definitely turn off headlights on the boat ramps, and don't crowd other anglers. Its just good fishing etiquette

just follow the rules good would be a major step compared to some of the stuff ive seen.
