breakfast cutting sugar and breads - what to eat?

breakfast cutting sugar and breads - what to eat? - 05/24/17 06:50 PM

So I started cutting sugar out of my diet back in January with the elimination of deserts, candy, donuts and pretty much all things sweet. Then a few weeks ago, I started to cut bread. I'm not cutting potatoes, rice or corn.

The problem is figuring out what to eat for breakfast. Almost all cereals have a fair amount of sugar. Lunch and dinner aren't a problem, but figuring out what to have for breakfast is. Anyone have suggestions???

Here's a breakfast salad from this morning. Sauteed together in olive oil a cut jalapeno, a little diced ham, a quarter potato, some broccoli, tomato and spinach and top with 2 eggs over easy. It was damn good!

My wife eats the mess out of eggs and egg whites.....usually one egg with whites added. My coach eats only eggs for breakfast. On a gas burner he can make a thing of eggs as fast as I can pour my coffee.

Eggs are about the best thing...protein is really the most important aspect. It's our word of the day around our house...everyday.

Sugar is everywhere....Milk even turns to sugar.

Sugar is one of those things....you surely don't want to fuel your day on.

Water and lettuce have no sweets. By the time you finish eliminating food that's all you will have to eat.
Dietitians will tell you that portion control is more important.

Oh Grandpa, you so silly. If you drank water and ate only lettuce you wouldn't live long....as lettuce is mostly water and has very little food value. smile

Get some spinach, greens, kale....now you are talking!

JP, I like spinach in my eggs...it wilts down so tasty.

That's some old school thinking.

Ideally you want fresh meats, fish, fruits, nuts and vegetables with as few processed foods as possible. There is still plenty to eat, you just have to stay out of the central part of a grocery store and pick from the outside areas where the produce, fish and meats are located.

Grandpa, they didn't have the 5 food groups when you took health class in elementary?

Re: breakfast cutting sugar and breads - what to eat? - 05/24/17 07:41 PM

JP, my wife count macros. It really helps here decide what to eat each day. It's almost like a puzzle. You plug in items, amounts and see if your daily totals meet the daily limits. I learn everything from listening to her.

All I knew before hand was 5 food groups and eat as many veggies as you can stand.

Counting calories and stuff like that is not for me. I'm just trying to slowly change my diet so I am eating healthier foods. We all eat way too much wheat and sugar.

Oh no, you got counting macros confused with counting calories.

You count carbs, protein and fat. The 3 most important things to track. Going without calories is horrible...body doesn't have energy.

Marcos is what body builders use to stay lean and muscular. It's a very healthy approach to dieting...since you can enjoy any food you wish. BUT you might shoot yourself in the foot for the rest of the day. smile

Re: breakfast cutting sugar and breads - what to eat? - 05/24/17 08:44 PM

BTW you get your macro count based on your activity level, age, gender, ect...you pay someone to do that for you. Online calculators are an average. You can then adjust them up and down based on what you want to achieve. Trust me....we eat healthy.....no junk food around us.

I eat for FUEL.....without the proper fuel my bike ride or run will leave me "crashed" and dead on the side of the road. I have to eat correctly or face the horrible feeling 4 miles into the run.

I used to freak out on my wife when it was chicken breast night....ugg....but now it's all I crave! Having run, bike, swim for almost 2 years straight I found by trail and error what to eat and what fuel my body needs. I don't go putting cruddy gas in my truck....why do that to our body!! I can always buy a new truck....body.....no matter the money...it's the only one you got!

My wife said many people are skipping breakfast meals, and just cooking a regular meal at breakfast time. Few more options for food.

She also said lot of folks are cooking bacon, beef patty, salmon, ect for their meat at breakfast. If you can handle the fat, choose bacon!

Bottom line...

Cutting the "joys of life" from your life is really hard.

There is no real substitute for "pleasure."

Junk food, sugar/salt, is pure pleasure.

But the rewards of doing so outweigh it. Feel great, more energy, more sleep, more clear thinking, ect.

Junk Food Pleasure Last only 5 mins.....then your are done eating, bloated and regretting it.

That looks wonderful. I do something similar but swap the meats around for venison sausage when I have it or Canadian bacon. Top it with Julios salsa.

J.P. - Forgot to mention if you are needing another option for protein in the morning aside from a meat product try peanut butter if you like it. Read labels as there are several "organic" and "natural" on the market that have high sugar gram counts. I had 2 apples with peanut butter this morning.

Never was a fan of the real PB until we found this brand.....I go through the big jar in about a week or less. Stir it up real good before use (store it upside down a day before stirring). We keep about 3 jars in the house minimum.

You can try almond butter, too. Similar to peanut butter in calories, fat and protein but a higher percentage of those fats are "healthy fats" and it also has more vitamins and minerals. (I'm a bigger fan of cashew butter myself...)

My wife has been doing a keto diet for a little over a month now. I won't tell you how much she's lost but I will tell you that I've lost nearly 10 pounds in 2 weeks.
It's not hard. It's basically managing your macros so that you cut carbs (easier than you think...and I love bread) and increase fat and protein and then get your body to burn Fat rather than carbs for energy.

I put my macros into an xls and then typical foods that are high in protein/fat, low in carbs.
I start with a base breakfast and lunch and whatever we are having for dinner. Then I use my xls to plug in the missing foods in order to meet my numbers. We also track through My Fitness Pal.

Eggs are a good breakfast source. If you want protein and good fat, you can add Avocados. If you're adventuresome, check for Olive Oils infused with other flavors. There is a shop in downtown Grapevine that sells them and you can taste samples.

funny...I just sent my wife a text giving her the heads up...no sugar and no grains for me going forward until I can drop 25 pounds and then from there on I will treat myself occasionally - I know myself, there can be no cheating until I hit my weight or I will never get there - extreme is what I have to do and I am bound and determined to get rid of this damned tire around my belly!

Re: breakfast cutting sugar and breads - what to eat? - 09/13/17 08:23 PM

Do it man. That's how I had to do it to get started, then it just got to be a lifestyle. I think you'll be surprised with a little daily physical activity how fast you can do it. Just know, it goes the other way just the same...

FWIW - I've been working at it since Jan 2016, I've lost about 60lbs. Never counted one carb, calorie, gram of whatever, or any of that. I sometimes look at it, but you know what's healthy and what isn't. In my opinion, portion size is probably the biggest factor of a diet.

Re: breakfast cutting sugar and breads - what to eat? - 09/14/17 01:39 AM

So in october of last year i completely cut all sugar (reading labels, i mean no sugar) and went very low carb (less then 40 gr day). I also began walking 2.5 plus miles a day, vigorous walk, sweat and elevated heart rate, even run a small part of it. I have lost a whopping.....10 pounds. Yes, i went from a couch sloth sugar carb eating machine to a diet conscious quasi excernut with less then exciting results bang

Now i will admit that i feel a whole lot better then i did, a whole lot. But the lack of any real weight loss has been discouraging

Re: breakfast cutting sugar and breads - what to eat? - 09/14/17 03:27 AM

I may be way off and anyone can correct me if I'm wrong. When I was really getting it, I stayed at x weight for about 4 weeks, finally decided keeping the same diet/work out routine had essentially caused me to plateau on my weight loss. So I really picked up the intensity of my "workouts" for a week or two and it started back up again.

I think there's a point somewhere, probably different for everyone, where the instant diet changes do their thing, but then your body catches up, same for workouts. That's when you have to crank it up to keep it going. Have to burn more cals than you consume, however you want to do that.

Typical Keto diet plateau. It's the new thang for the hipsters. smile

Why cut out all those good things in life? Why not just count calories? That is ultimately where you loose or win.

Next year what will the diet fad be? It has to be some cool sounding word for people to do it. smile

(I will add people who do Keto claim they feel so much better cutting out carbs, but is it really the carbs or the new lifestyle that fixed their problem?? My vote is its the lifestyle change...but don't tell them that....they get all bent out of shape....I understand their anger....life without carbs makes you angry. smile )

cutting simple sugar out of a diet is far from new - if you want long term success with any eating plan you must make it a lifestyle and not a diet for sure.

Watch out for fruit if you are diabetic. My dad was on Weight Watchers Diet and fruit was zero points....it runs off a point system. He was eating bananas and apples all day long to feel full. He doesn't eat sugary foods, but found out how sugary those fruits are when he was borderline diabetic last month.

I was just being funny about Keto diet....it's all the rave right now. Those folks love it and swear by the low carbs......but man life isn't as enjoyable then!!

Re: breakfast cutting sugar and breads - what to eat? - 09/18/17 08:13 PM

No diet in the world is going to help you lose weight without proper portion control. Rule of thumb for those starting out, imagine how much is good for you to eat and cut it in half. At a restaurant, plan on taking half of your meal home. At home, plan on saving half of your meal for tomorrow's lunch. Don't intentionally make extra. Just eat less of it.

I'm doing a combination, fasting/low-carb/portion control. I've lost 20 pounds in 3 weeks so far. I fast for 3-5 days depending on my work schedule, then small, low-carb meals for the rest of the week. When I hit my goal weight, I'll adjust. Probably start out fasting 1-2 days a week and small, low-carb meals for the rest of the week.

Hint on bread. There some very low carb tortillas and flatbreads out there; Xtreme Wellness Wraps, Flatout flatbreads. I buy both at Kroger but there are some others. These have 5-6 net grams of carbs. I even cut up a package now and then to stick in the oven and make tortilla chips. Not as good as corn tortilla chips, but a decent substitute.

Dave's Killer Light bread isn't bad. It's only 60 calories and 9 net carbs. I've been eating one piece in the morning with my eggs and no other breads, pastas or potatoes the rest of the day. Couldn't go totally no carb because it was making me weak but I'm still losing with the Dave's bread just in the morning.

I have found out most people who do no carbs actually eat some carbs....but very low amounts. It was always misleading to me to hear no carbs. It's very difficult to consume no carbs....since even veggies have carbs.

10 pounds sounds about right for what you say you've done.

even if you ran those 2.5 miles you're only burning a couple hundred calories. walking/running is good for the body and heart, terrible for losing weight

You're right. I was trying to stay below 20 grams/day and only getting them from fruits/veggies. But I was getting sick and dizzy and couldn't focus at work. Just adding the one piece of bread in the morning made all the difference. I still don't eat any other bread, potatoes, or pasta and very limited fruit but I'll have a small sweet potato on days I lift. Calorie counting has been the biggest help.

There are lots of "carb-blocker" pills on the market, available at all drug stores and grocery stores.

I used them many times in the past, then I stop when I run out, then buy another bottle, and so on.

It's been several years since I've tried them.

I would rather eat my breads in all forms, and simply take carb-blockers.

* I have no idea whatsoever if they work at all!!!! *

Before I went on the low-carb kick, I'd estimate that I was eating 150-200g of carbs every day. When I was in high school and college, I was active enough to burn those off. Now I maintain my weight by eating 30-50g of carbs every day.

No sugar no grain.

Google Vinnie Tortorich and or #NSNG ...basically eating meats, veggies, some fruits, full fat dairy - it took me 10 days to start losing and once I started I am losing about 3 pounds a week. No starch/No Bread etc. Lo Carb - full fat foods.

No question not an easy thing to do is go zero sugar because so many things turn to sugar when they hit your digestive system...getting quite creative with food and enjoying how I feel. No sugar rushes is nice.
