Pool Noodle - Yakers best friend

Pool Noodle - Yakers best friend - 04/29/14 01:49 AM

I'm not sure there is anything available to the yaker that is more versatile than the pool noodle. So, here are a few of the uses I've come up with..not all are original to me. What do you use them for?

Cart

Lure Caddy

Battery Box

Live Well (I'd put a lid on it though.)

Loading pads

Noodle Markers

Rod Floats

Rod Holder Float

Roof Rack

No idea what this guy was doing.

Anchor float

Shin kickers

The live well is a great idea!

I think the guy that has them on the green twin hull kayak is either using them so the sides are more comfortable to lean against or so if he hits the sides with the paddle they don't make any noise. I am going with more comfortable ...why else would he have one on the back?

Easier to spot in the water.

I have two concerns about the live well.

1. Fish jump. It needs a screen over the top of come sort. I think you could use one of those DIY window screen kits or maybe shade cloth to keep them from jumping out.

2. How do you paddle with that thing behind you? I guess you could put it in your lap. On the other hand, it would function like a drift chute in windy conditions. If your bank fishing..this thing would rock!

I've got another noodle use, but I've got to get a pic of it first.

Thats a great one. I had thought about putting one on the back (cut in half long ways) but never thought about doing it that way.

It would be a drag to paddle behind you but I was thinking about putting it on the front deck or behind me while paddling. I was also thinking about one that came with a lid.

It would drain easy, so pulling it out of the water would be a piece of cake.

Re: Pool Noodle - Yakers best friend - 04/30/14 02:05 PM

I personally think that the live well is a bad idea. Even after adding a lid, it's too large to pull with your kayak and too bulky to carry it above the water. A simple stringer would do for me. In freshwater, you don't have to worry about a large predator taking your stringer so it's not a safety concern. I try to go by the KISS principle.

I used to have an SUV and padded the factory rack with pool noodles when I hauled my kayaks. I still use pool noodles as rod floats when I go fishing BTB.

I like the rod holder idea. Simple and efficient!

I use the noodles to plug the scupper holes in my SOT to keep my butt dry.

Great ideas.

Old popping corks work as scupper plugs, too. I use 'em in the back area/well.

How do you keep water from coming through the hole in the center of the noodle?

Gotta say the rod holder is a new one for me, and I love the idea. I'll be stealing that one.

This one is kinda interesting also...you just never know

I like the rod holder. I would think the live well would only be good for bank fishing. Too bulky for the yak but great idea.

They worked great in my DIY yak rack I posted about here

Exactly what I was thinking, almost verbatim.

I made some quick scupper plugs with pool noodle, also made some easy on/off rod floats that I like alot.

As soon as I saw it, I went straight into the garage, with noodle, screws, and knife on hand.
