GTMO Cuba

GTMO Cuba - 08/04/17 05:06 PM

Headed there for my next deployment and plan on spending my free time fishing. Has anyone been there recently in the past few years? I'm mainly looking at some wade fishing with the possibility of some blue water. I'll be packing my 11wt or 8wt fly rod first and have the other rod sent later. Which rod should I bring first? Google leads to others posing the same questions, but the posts are almost a decade old.

Thanks

Old information but a spinning rod with 15/20 pound line and various # test leader material will catch almost anything you'll hook there. barracuda, tarpon, jacks and bonefish were what we caught along with snapper eat when we tried the bottom fishing. Anything that you catch in the Bahamas you'll catch at Gtmo.
Tight lines

Thanks. Was it all bottom fishing, was lure fishing any good?

No fishing advice for GTMO but it brought back memories. In the early 80's the carrier I was on stopped in GTMO for a few days prior to BECCE drills and I remember getting off the liberty boats at the pier and looking down seeing 4-5' tarpon rolling around under the pier. Sure wished I could have tried for one! But the guys there told me they almost never bit anything they presented to them. Apparently back then there was so much food readily available to them. Good luck tho!
