Matagorda

Matagorda - 07/03/17 06:03 PM

A million years ago (17 anyway) I drove down to Matagorda with my parents and I remember people fishing a pier there.....Saw a guy catch a monster redfish and seems like it was very uncrowned. I was looking at the area on Google Earth this morning and I don't see much of a pier. I see a boardwalk that stretches over the beach and kinda-sort turns into a little pier.....and then I see the jetties. Was there a pier here that was mucked out by one of the hurricanes over the last 17 years or is the one I'm seeing just not quite as big as my memory makes it seem?

Also, if I was gonna scoot that direction one day, are the jetties fishable? Do you have to wait until the tide is incoming?

Curious,

Matt

There was a pier that ran out to the old jetty. Still there (the old jetty too), just a lot less water under it. The river mouth silted in and the whole setup changed. About six years ago the river mouth was opened up and a new jetty constructed on the north bank. FYI, there are three piers in the park just upstream from the jetty. The two at the RV park are lighted; not sure about the one above them.

Matt,
Jetties reworked a few years back as stated, very accessible, covered with people on weekends.
The water under pier section is very shallow, but I still see people fishing it sometimes.
Good luck, I fish offshore out of Matagorda, so can't say how good fishing is off the rocks.
