Recommended Rod/Spinning Reel for Saltwater?

Hey guys!

New to saltwater and was wondering what 1) Rod and 2) Spinning reel, that you guys recommend?

Also, what type line do you guys use? I will be fishing from my aunts dock in the trinity bay. There are reds and flounder, will be taking a pole for each-- I have a bunch of gulp/jigs ready as well as topwaters for reds-- hope this helps to determine what line/rod/reel i should be using.

I wouldn't drop too much coin unless youre going to really use the stuff. I have a few falcon coastal 6'6" wade fishing rods with identical reels, stradic 3000 series with 30lb power pro, I like to have identical setups that way I know how they behave and can rig them all with a different setup (topwater, plastic, popping cork)
stradics are a little pricey, but I fished with Penn battles for years and they held up good, just a little heavy

there may be better choices, but this is what I use for everything, bass, crappie, sandbass, catfish, trout, red, flounder.

Penn battle is a great reel for the salt.

Lews makes a nice little spinning reel, and the Cabelas Salt Striker is a great value as well. Another good value is the Okuma Trio...

As for rods the action is probably the most important. For general all around lure use and some live bait a good Med Action graphite rod rated for 1/8th oz to 5/8oz will cover a lot of ground. For popping corks casting bigger corks or bigger live bait like a jumbo shrimp of live mullet then a med heavy is going to be a better fit. Marburgers has a good line up of rods .. Lews, Castaway, some others... just depends on your price range.

Go to Bass Pro Shop and buy one of their own brand combos. These cost less than $50.0. If you want a serious saltwater spinning rig (+/- $100.00) , get a Penn, Quantum, or Daiwa. For a serious rod (+/- $100.00) get a medium light Castaway or other brand name, not Shakespear. Saltwater, piers, Redfish, and Flounder can be tough on light so I would use 15 lb. Ande or Berkley Big Game. Don't go either light or heavy on the line. If you can, consider wading around the piers for flounder.

After reading more, I think I am going to go with the Hurricane Redbone MH 10/20 lb test 7ft 6in with a penn fierce 4000 spinnning reel-- Right in my price range and it seems a lot of people in my area use this for the kind of fish I am targeting (Reds/Flounder/Specs) from piers/docks etc-- (inshore)

I think I am gonna do 20-30 lb braid with 20lb fluro leader-

sounds like a good set up, but i'd go lighter on the rod. probably just my preference, but lighter seems better with spinning gear, at least Medium with a 7'-6" rod.

Pilot, with a good set drag you don't need too much power on the rod.
My flounder rod in Peru (where there's a lot of rocks and heavy weed) is a Med/Fast 7' Uglystik. Used a 3000 reel a lot, but when they are big and trying to hide a 4000 brings a little more power to the fight, though not needed routinely.
If using only on the docks and no need for long casts, a 7'0 may also be easier to manage, though a 7'6" may do very well too. GEt a net to lift the big one so you don't snap the line or break the rod.
