sea sickness?

I had such bad experiences as kid going offshore that I didn't start offshore fishing again until lately taking prescription Meclizine. It doesn't make me too drowsy and has been perfect keeping the sea sickness away.

Since I've never done a 2+ day trip, my question is if you get sick the first day on a multiple day drip will you be fine rest of trip or stay sick the entire time? Basically, question is if you ever get acclimated.

Short answer: it depends on the individual. Me personally, if I get seasick during a multi-day trip, I'm screwed for the duration. I've seen other guys be miserably sick for the first day and then the next they're fishing like crazy.

When we deployed to the Gulf War (the 1990-91 one), it took me over a week to finally get my sea legs on the helo carrier. Some poor saps took a month.

Rob, how would you like to be sick free for up to 4 days? Call your doctor and have him call in a prescription for "TRANSDERM-SC 1.5MG DIS NOVA" You put this patch behind your ear. I can't tell you how many times I've been terribly ill deep sea fishing. Using this patch, I fell no different than sitting on the couch watching a game. Everyone that I have referred this patch to have told me it is a miracle.

Ohh I love Meclizine, has been perfect for me without bad side effects. I think it is only good for 12 hours, will have to check about taking it every 12 hours for multiple day trip.

Thanks guys, I just didn't know how quick it was to get over the sickness without help. Wow, can't imagine a week, much less a month of being sick!

Been there not good, what I do and has been about 100% successful.
Watch my food intake a day and 1/2 before I go offshore, nothing fried, spicey, hot.
I take ginger capsules about 4 daily in 12 hrs with drammimene plenty of water and gator ade, eat fruit cups jerky pudding crackers etc. For my emergencey I had my dr prescribe Zofran or the generic which works after you get sick very well and quick. Also drink ginger ale. This is the best for me I have ever used and will again in 3 weeks.

I have beaten sea sickness by taking over the counter Dramamine starting 3 days before the trip and continued daily until off the water. Good fishing.

Meclizine works so-so for me. I tried the prescription scopolamine patches ("transderm"), and they made me violently sick before I ever stepped foot on the boat. Bonine is the most reliable seasick med for me, and the Zofran mentioned above is also outstanding, though it can be expensive.

If you know you're prone to it, you can do any of the above to help, for an added "edge" watch the mainland as long as you can and as the boat starts to lose sight of land look for rigs and start counting/naming them. It may sound silly, but a rig is a static structure your brain wants to recognize and it will register with your inner ear no matter how small it looks from a distance, and the "mind game" of counting them helps, too.

My wife gets sick every time she goes until last time when the doctor gave her a prescription for the patch that goes behind your ear. She felt great the entire time and we were in 3-5 foot swells which usually she would have been sick in.

Also, ginger ale as mentioned above. But also, at Trader Joe's (grocery store in Dallas) they sell ginger chews candy and my wife loves those. She says its almost instant relief from feeling sick.

I actually live in Union Valley. I get my water from Cash. Yes we are close to each other. If I get back out there soon I will pick you up a bag or 2. I will check with my wife and see if she has any extra. I could meet you out at Tawakoni and maybe we could go fish a bit, since you always seem to have better luck than me out there. If you can tolerate the Transderm-Scop patches behind your ear (and I think almost everyone can), they are fantastic. Everyone I know who gets seasick and has tried them are amazed at the results. My doctor prescribes them with a simple call to the office.

NASA studies indicate that nothing else comes close to being as effective. As a result, it's used by our astronauts during flight. Just be sure to apply the evening before going offshore.

You can get Zofran (odansetron) for $4 at HEB pharmacies. It is a wonder drug and one that I have at my home at all times.

Any reasonable pcp will give this to you on request and long as you don't have any contraindications to taking it.

Actually staying up late and drinking works really well. The less sleep, the better. Particularly effective on hot August days with a big slow swell.

Just hope your Captain provides a complimentary lunch of fish dip and tortilla chips. And yes, I have tried this.
