Anyone have any luck on trout and reds in the surf around Galveston these past few days?

Let me know how you end up doing, spooncg. I will be there in a few weeks.

Last year, I rented a beach house there with my family. I kept a rod handy with a zara spook. Every time I saw the birds circling around, I'd wade out into the surf and dance that spook around. I was catching trout on darn near every cast. But as soon as the birds flew away it turned off like a light switch.

Heading down Thursday, I couldn't tell you where we are staying, but I'm told it's somewhat close to a public pier. I'm seeing record blue water down there which when I fished down there years ago it was almost too clear, fish would see you a mile away. I told my buddy if I can fit a rod and reel I'll bring, if not we'll just hang out and have a beverage or 5.

Last week the water was beautiful. Now with the Southeast wind it is chocolate. The 91st street pier has some excellent night fishing if the wind drops so the water can clear. The 1st set of lights as you walk onto the pier are pretty consistent for trout on small minnow type soft plastics.
If the water is bad live shrimp will still get you a few.

I forgot to ask...do I need one of those special drop down nets for fishing on pier? I'd hate to actually catch a few keepers and lose them b/c I don't have the right net? I think the last time I fished any sort of pier was Matagorda jetties before the hurricanes took out a chunk, and you had to have like a 20' drop net.

Well yesterday I threw a swimbait with no luck in the morning and in the evening I switched to a spinner bait because the water is so muddy, especially with the consistent wind.
I did go out with a guide today and we caught our limit of trout pretty quickly using live bait fish, launching near Texas City.

I plan on wading out again in Galveston this evening, so I’ll let you know if the fishing is any better.

I am heading down on Saturday for a week. we are staying at sandpiper which is on the north east end of the island. Are there any fish on the jettis? I am a bass fisherman and dont have the gear to wade fish. Hoping to catch a few with the family without having to drag them into the water.

We just got back from a 5 day trip. The trout were all over at red dot and Cosway piers. Not monsters. But were catching around 45 or so an hour under the lights. 13-19 inchers.

The Water has been horrible but right now it looks like the "blue water" is trying to come back in.
