Top 25 Chevrolet Dealers in the Country - 01/03/09 12:59 PM

We were #21 in the United States out of about 5,000 Chevrolet dealers for the month of December. It's kind of weird doing a "We're #21" chant but what the heck it's kind of cool for a little dealership on the West Side of Ft Worth to rank so high Nationally. Thank you T-Man you helped us beat Covert. thumb

Monte, What should one make of the fact that eight of the top 25 are here in the Lone Star, and from a quick look, only one of those 25 is in the PRC. Is that just the fact that they have more stores, or is the Kalifornia economy so bad that people ain't buying? Or, is everyone in the PRC driving a mercedes/bmw?

I found that number a bit of a surprise.

Re: Top 25 Chevrolet Dealers in the Country - 01/03/09 01:39 PM

The list I got this from actually shows the Top 250 Dealers and there are plenty of California dealers represented. As far as Texas having so many in the Top 25 that's pretty typical when you look at the whole list Texas is pretty dominant in fact 16 Texas Dealers are in the Top 50. The Midwest and North East seem to do pretty well too.

I did a commercial for Karl Chevrolet #4. He's a good friend of my dads. Right on 35 just North of Des Moines. On a good Saturday they can sell a hundred.

Good job Monte.

Monte, Is the current economic situation going to lead to the loss of many of the small town dealerships and sales becoming more focused on the larger high volume sales type operation?

I wonder how long the marginal dealerships can continue to exist while sales are down. People are seeing ads from the high volume dealers and are willing to drive some distance to get the better deal.

Is this what you see happening?

I was surprised to see 3 of the top 25 from Michigan with their terrible economy!

I know you asked Monte but here is what I know.

A small town dealer that sell's 25 new cars a month can not make you the same deal that you can get somewhere like Moritz. They have to survive on a lot less volume so have to make up for it on the profits.

By the way we were down 12 units from last December which is not too bad considering the current conditions.

I'm curious Monte, what factor's make them on this list? As a consumer (who has way to many car's LOL) all I care about is getting the best price I can on a vehicle. If I walk away thinking your gonna have to mix sawdust in the meatloaf to feed yer kid's dinner tonight, because of the lousy comission you got from me, I'm happy! (er...not personal, but you get what I mean LOL)

Rusk had two dealerships, one ford and one chevy , both went belly up last month. The chevy place is going to try to stay
open as used cars and service dept only.

It's going to be tough for the smaller dealers but in my opinion even tougher for some of the under performing big dealers who have unbelievable overhead. There are some huge dealerships in the DFW area that only sold 40-60 new cars last month they will not last long at that rate.

Re: Top 25 Chevrolet Dealers in the Country - 01/03/09 02:43 PM

I think the general public has no idea how little money a dealership actually makes on many of its sales. Given the current situation, and the fact that taxes and other expenses continue to mount, I don't see how some of them are going to survive.

It is kinda sad. I drive out to Kaufman at times to get service on my truck because I hate the huge maintenance facility at the mega store. I can even call the folks in Kaufman and ask questions of the service staff. Try that a five star Ford and see how it goes.

Oh well, some call it progress.

Greg James, the Chevrolet dealer in Rusk, has his house in Nacogdoches up for sale for $700,000. I guess it was a good dealership for a while.

I live right around the corner from Classic and it is a giant of a Dealership. I can see how they'd move a lot of units. I'd be interested to see just how many vehicles they have on site because for as big as it is, there's no room wasted. It's bumper to bumper, mirror to mirror.

My brother in law just got laid off as a service manager at a Chevrolet dealer in California. Not sure how big that operation was, but things are definitely tough for some of these folks.

Monte----Just out of curiosity with the 9/25 for TEXAS dealerships,in your opinion, why was Landmark out of Houston, unable to survive? They always advertised top Chevy sales in Texas, was that just misleading advertising on their part covering up a much bigger problem?

If only T-man would convince all of his Southlake neighbors to buy a Chevy (for their hired help of course) it could bump Monte up into the #1 slot.

Where do you think Classic is located?

What I should do is tell all of them to go to Monte, instead of Classic.

I hate to speculate on their problems because I don't really know what happened. I do know that at one time they were a big name in Texas Chevrolet sales. It's been a long time since they were #1 but they were definitely close to the top.

Classic is a great dealership their location makes them tough to beat T-Man send em our way. thumb

I don't remember exactly when, but the Quitman Chevy dealership went belly up in the last year or so.

I've always had a hard time understanding how more than one dealership in a county could survive in East Texas. Houston, Dallas, etc. I can understand, but having a dealership in Quitman, Mineola, plus, Gladewater, Winnsboro and so forth, I'm just at a loss to understand how that many could survive in areas of such low population densities.

TFP - you won't see many older/antique vehicles sitting out in the fields when driving the backroads in those areas - that's because people are still driving them.
