We have one on Lake Athens that has a head about as big as a 60 lbs. pit bull terrier. It is well-known, seen quite a lot. Lately, it has been hanging around the NW side of the 2495 bridge up in the mouth of a cove.

Kayaking friends saw it a week or so ago, asked me if I had ever seen it and I told them its history.

It seems to follow me when I am in my "alligator snapping turtle-colored" canoe. I think it has amorous intentions, not sure.

And, I don't want to find out!

*** Alligator snappers have the really strong ridges on their carapaces (upper shell); common snapping turtles have smooth carapaces. I think Lake Athens is close to as far west as the Alligator snappers are found. They are common in southeast states.

Very cool prehistoric animals.
