S. San Gabriel @ Circleville "The Steps"

S. San Gabriel @ Circleville "The Steps" - 01/01/17 11:44 PM

Fished at "The Steps" yesterday for 3 or 4 hours. The river looks amazing, lots of clear flowing water, just not many fish biting. I ended catching a few undersize crappie and a small black bass, but no white bass. Still a bit early I guess, but thought I'd give it a try. Should be a good run this year if the water level holds.

Thanks for the report. I'll have to come up and fish with you when they get going good.

Jamie, I think you could do really well there with your fly rod.

Gonna be hard to beat Nails and Yegua this year. Both are just about the best I've ever fished.

That's true, but tough to beat Louie Mueller's BBQ in Taylor for a great post fishing trip meal.

What's up Jared? Been reading you and Hook Line and Sinkers fish porn...you guys got me all wound up! Selling the kayak tomorrow...need the $ for a surgery my baby girl needs, so I will be beating the banks for the foreseeable future. We should try to get some guys together for a Yegua beatdown this year!
I just cant get myself to invest the time into Granger anymore. Just too many people and the size just isnt like Yegua. It was great in the yak, but from the bank I get frustrated out there. Who knows, maybe Reimer's will be back to normal this year too! Take care brotha!

Re: S. San Gabriel @ Circleville "The Steps" - 01/03/17 01:11 AM

That storm blew in wet and violent putting just enough water in the Somerville creeks to muddy them up. That did a number on the fish and they got a bad case of lock-jaw. I am reel confident they are still there but judging from how few fish J-Moe and I caught Monday you wouldn't know it! As I drove up to Nails Creek Park I crossed over Jerdelle, McCain and Cedar creeks which looked nice in the morning but by 2 PM they were all flowing and muddy. It took a few hours for the water to reach the lake. There is a slight chance that little flush of fresh muddy water will bring up a wave of whitebass from the lake but I wouldn't plan on it.

Just wondering if the whites have made it up there yet? I bet the water is spectacular this year.

Is the primitive boat launch open yet? Can kayakers get their yaks down there?

Jamie would have a blast at the steps with is fly rod. There will also be several others there to compete with though. A lot of fly fisherman at this place.

There may be more and bigger fish coming out of Somerville, but I like this river bank better. You can stand on flat ground while you fish, your toes are not trying to poke through your shoes the entire time. But I do both, so it doesn't matter.

Yes, I absolutely would, not matter if white bass are smaller than the ones I catch at Somerville. The setting would be what made it special. Let me know when you head that way.

Was there yesterday, 1 dink in 2 hours.

Now that sounds exactly like the steps. During the heart of the run it's 2 dinks per hour, if you happen to be throwing the right bait.

Did any one notice the river minnows in there. are there a lot of minnow swimming around? Those things are like white bass crack.

We saw no minnows while we were there.

Re: S. San Gabriel @ Circleville "The Steps" - 02/09/17 01:23 AM

I went to the steps today. I arrived sometime after 12:00. Anyhow, thought I would explore a little more of the river this time, so I did. Long story short, I caught two in the same place I caught one the other day when I was there. Saw several other anglers with a few on their stringer as they were leaving. One might have had like four to five, the other guys had like eight. Saw two other guys walk to a place with store bought minnows on a bobber catch maybe six between the two. Not real sure what kind of fish they had, but I am guessing from what I know about that spot, crappie. I have a few buddies who have been fishing that same spot in the afternoons and they have been catching crappie like crazy there is why I’m guessing crappie. You really can’t judge the quality of fishing from this report, because I was there at the worst time of the day and I really did not put a 100% effort into todays trip. I went today because I was bored and the weather was so nice. Plus my wife had some stuff to do and I sure didn’t want a go do it with her. LOL Now the truth comes out. LMBO. But I had a good time talking to the game warden and other anglers while I was there, catching a few whites was just a bonus.

Re: S. San Gabriel @ Circleville "The Steps" - 02/13/17 04:39 PM

Went out Saturday morning. Caught some dinks and only 4 keepers. However, all 4 keepers were females. 2 were caught on a chartreuse clouser via fly rod, 2 were caught on white roadrunner via spinning rod.

went out to the steps friday afternoon and got one white, with a minnow about 4 foot under a slip bobber. went out Sunday morning, but went to a WMA since the steps were packed. caught two largemouth on minnows 4-6 feet under a slip bobber.

A buddy and I went out yesterday afternoon (Sunday) from 2-430 and caught 3 keeper whites and 2 LMB. The LMB were caught on minnows under a bobber and the whites were caught off a 2" chartreuse jig.

Re: S. San Gabriel @ Circleville "The Steps" - 02/14/17 08:51 PM

A buddy and I did a little night jigging last night and we both caught about ten each. Half our catch was crappie, other half whites. Threw everything back in to live another day. About half of these were throw backs, the big girls haven't showed up yet. But it was a fun little trip.

Re: S. San Gabriel @ Circleville "The Steps" - 02/17/17 04:54 PM

Once you go over the railroad tracks it'll be less than a 1/4 mile and cars will be on both sides of the county road. Can't miss it. The steps go down near where the COE/TP&W sign is at. Good luck!

Re: S. San Gabriel @ Circleville "The Steps" - 02/17/17 08:31 PM

yup, Heath is spot on. Take a right on 347 off of 95 right outside of Taylor and you can't miss it. let us know if you catch anything, and good luck!

Look for all the cars parked on the sides of the road. LOL.

With the coming rains and warmer weather, I'm betting we are only days away from the main start of the run this year. Can't wait.

Went out yesterday evening. Fished for only about an hour. 8 keepers, a few dinks, and a few small crappie. All caught on fly rod.

Thanks for that report. Sounds like you found a few.

Just wondering how the water was affected by the rains Sunday night? I was hoping it would help get this thing going?

Re: S. San Gabriel @ Circleville "The Steps" - 03/03/17 01:16 PM

Nice video greenyak. the water looks great back there.

Willis Creek has always been a tough place for me to fish. It always looks very fishy back there but I've not had the same luck there as by the steps. I like that not many people go there; and it is peaceful. I just wish the fish would find it peaceful and go in there too. With the way that water looks maybe they will.

I'm hoping the steps will begin producing good numbers soon. I'm itching to get down there and try my luck. I'm stuck at work these days.

tight lines all!

mud slick city right now. some being caught on minnows. no bites on artificials, but we didn't try terribly hard before we decided to go watch some tv and skip the mud. does not look like the run has started as of yesterday afternoon. on that note, rain rain go away...

Re: S. San Gabriel @ Circleville "The Steps" - 03/16/17 08:21 PM

The wife and I tried to fish the steps yesterday afternoon. there were so many cars there I didn't find a parking space nearby. I tried to park down the street a ways and was told by a property owner I was in her property. So, we drove around to the 95 bridge side way upstream from the steps. That parking lot was full too, but we managed to park on the side anyway and walked.

We found a spot and fished downstream within eye site of the 95 bridge. The water was stained and flowing good. In the fast current, it took a while to find a good spot holding fish. But when momma finally did, she began to finally catch them. We caught and released 3 whites (12 inchers) and 4 small crappie between 5-7pm. she missed several other good bites too. We only took 1 doz. store bought minnows. So she didn't fish long. But we left them biting. That was a good sign. the fish are way upstream near and/or past the 95 bridge. I imagine the females will be in there before long.

I guess the spring breakers had a crowd down at the steps. I can only imagine how many people were down there shoulder to shoulder. Glad we were on the other end.

that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

tight lines!
