Is that Rowlett Creek near Miller Road? I've never fished there before, but I do go to Rowlett Creek Preserve and trail-bike ride a lot. Regarding fishing, I stay mostly in the Richardson/Plano areas, but I might venture out.

PM the specific location if it's a secret, please.

Re: Rowlett Creek 2016-2017 - 12/03/16 12:22 AM

Hey Fisherman Joe, I fished this morning with KFJ but no luck. I think KFJ caught about 20-30 crappies and saw a couple of guys had nice stringers of fish. I talked to 3 fishermen, they all caught about 50 to 60 under size. They bite early in the morning. I came around 10am and it was slow. I still have a lot to learn from you guys for crappie fishing. Tight lines everyone

There are access points to Rowlett creek off Miller road, 66 and bike park off Centerville. I don't know where they're fishing but if you start at one of these spots and start walking you'll eventually find fish, or people, which means fish.

Here's some tip for the people is not doing to well.

Ultra lite rod 4lb line (you need this to feel the bite or you miss all the time or can't feel the bite at all)

1/16oz head.
any color jig my favorite is this one

Cause I LOVE GOOOOOLD!

Cast into a spot where you think they are in and reel it pause reel it pause. No bite move on to somewhere else.

Re: Rowlett Creek 2016-2017 - 12/21/16 01:05 AM

I recommend investing in some scents, especially shad oil type scents. I primarily use the Bonehead stuff. Also use your fingers on your reeling hand to feel the line because bite is really light. What's been working for me is more of the silver and blue colors.

Re: Rowlett Creek 2016-2017 - 12/21/16 04:20 AM

With air pressure being so high these few. Days. You would basically have to live line minnows or 1 small splitshot. Other then that they are basically lethargic unroll. We get some low pressure.

Re: Rowlett Creek 2016-2017 - 12/21/16 07:18 AM

http://www.usairnet.com/weather/conditions/?station=KTKI <--- BOOKMARK THIS!

Check the barometric air pressure before heading out.

~29.75 - ~30.25 is your "safe zone" between this range, jigs should produce. Anything under or over, MOST of the time, you're going to have to use minnows. If the pressure is rising, the bite will be slower. If it is falling, the bite is generally better. Falling/Rising too fast will shut off the bite. Use minnows or go home. If the pressure is at 29.60 or lower, or 30.40 or higher, I WILL NOT go out, unless I'm dreadfully bored. I'm not wasting my time with just a few fish.. I know, I'm spoiled... I'll clean the house, or tie some flies or jigs or something. Any time after a major cold front, it generally takes 3-4 days for everything to settle back down. Tomorrow should start picking back up.

If you're throwing over 4-6lb line, you're wasting your time and missing fish. If you're throwing heavier than 1/16th-1/32nd, you're not going to do very well. If you're fishing jig and bobber, you want to use the SMALLEST peg float that will stay afloat with your jig. 90% of the time, I'm throwing 4lb hi vis crappie max, with a 2-3' 4lb flouro leader. On the days they're biting extremely light, I will switch to the 2nd rod I carry, with 10lb braid, and a 4lb flouro leader. Color doesn't seem to matter too much right now. Deeper pockets, 1/16th. Shallower pockets, 1/32nd. Sensitive 7' light or medium action rod and a light spinning reel.

Re: Rowlett Creek 2016-2017 - 12/21/16 12:23 PM

To everyone having a hard time, it's not the air pressure. Fish will bite just fine even if the air pressure is high or falling too fast or doing whatever is mentioned above. LOCATION is EVERYTHING when it comes to catching crappie. This is why at some creeks you find people lining the banks in certain areas catching fish. That is because they have located the crappie. Case and point was yesterday when I found an area at a creek that was about the side of a couch that was LOADED with good fish. Once I got out of that area, I just reeled in because I knew I wouldn't get bite. I couldn't tell you how many times I have went to a creek and did very well when everyone else was staying home because of the pressure.

Re: Rowlett Creek 2016-2017 - 12/21/16 05:24 PM

Sorry for the late posting...my son and I met up with my buddy KFJ on Saturday morning. Temps started out in the upper 50s/lower 60's and proceed to rise to about 72. We were into them pretty good from 7 to about 1. The wind begin to pick up and change to the north and then we shut it down. All total caught over 70 between my son and I with KFJ catching alot as well(don't know exactly how many). We ended up with this stringer of keepers. The vast majority were undersized in the 8.5 - 9.5 range. Hopefully they will grow in time for the spring spawn. One thing I noticed when cleaning that several of them already had eggs...that surprised me they had eggs already. Tight lines and be safe everyone!

Yes, yes. I know you caught your limit yesterday. That's why I said "MOST" of the time. Others may have different experiences, but over the years, from MY personal experience, as well as many others, that seems to be the general rule. Again, just sharing from MY own personal experience.

More like 2 - 3 inches. The bigger crappie are the small one. Did a figure 8 like musky to get them to bite

i agreed what you talking that, but pressure still important. txpacker 4 and your experience if add together ,might clean it all the creek,my was location +equipment+timing+weather that's right we alway's carry two rod. fish

Thanks for the props brother! cheers How did you do out there yesterday KFJ? I managed around 20ish with probably 8-10 possibly being keepers, between 5:00pm-6:30pm. I've got a full schedule today, so the fish are safe from me today. I'll be back at it tomorrow, and probably all day Saturday. BTW, I actually found them sitting shallower than they have been. I caught most of mine yesterday, in about 5'-6', fishing with 1/32 hand tied white/chartreuse about 4.5' under a float.

That just goes to show that every body of water is different. In another creek yesterday, they were hugging the bottom in the deepest holes, up to 20' deep. Nothing to be found shallow.

its really interesting how often you jump on here to correct Cody. Seems like you correct everything he says, you rarely offer many reports, you rarely give locations etc, but you just try to disprove Cody and Carey. I heard you're guiding now? You'd sell more trips if you took away the negativity. I'm sorry buddy, but the air pressure is usually a pretty safe bet when fish are in the creeks.

I'm just simply wanting people to keep an open mind because the fish that I catch don't seem to be bothered by the pressure. I guess that makes me negative lol. Out of respect for jimmy.. I won't say anything else on here. Tight lines.

Went out to Rowlett today and met up with Kung Foo Jimmy. He set me up with a slip bobber, jig color, and depth. What a great day. Caught a few small ones and a keeper. Jimmy had a couple of keepers that he gave to me for dinner. Lets enjoy each others company, info, fishing space, and respect. Thank you Jimmy for all your info and letting me catch some fish without all the bull [censored]. Your a very generous man who makes this forum a better place to get fishing!!!!!!

Re: Rowlett Creek 2016-2017 - 12/23/16 05:50 AM

I just started this year without knowing anything about fishing. Fishing is suppose to be relaxing and making friends, but in this hobby there isn't really any of that. I was asking people what lure they were using and how they were fishing for the white bass, and people did't even bother to answer. I am glad I met KungFuJimmy at the beginning of the white bass season at rowlett creek. I was fishing and saw KungFuJimmy(we don't know each other yet) waving at me telling me to come over to his spot and said, "hey!, the fish is over here and its biting really good right now." He was also kind enough to give me some of his lures to use after I have been skunking for 2 days and only meeting him for couple minutes I caught my first white bass and slayed them laugh. Anyways most of people in this hobby are rude and shady... so fake. There are people on here who take advantages of KungFuJimmy and you know who you are grin

Most people I've run into on the creek in person have been great. Lots of people don't want to help someone who hasn't put in any effort, but if you're out there trying, they will.

Re: Rowlett Creek 2016-2017 - 12/23/16 05:44 PM

I'm planning on fishing it this afternoon. I'll be in the kayak this time. I walked the creek the other day looking for interesting places that are hard to cast into on foot. I prefer the places off the beaten path, even if they aren't the hottest spots. If you see me, I'll tell you what I see on my graph!

to some extent, the creeks are never going to pump out keeper crappie after keeper crappie. Bigger fish will show as it gets colder, but You'll always get more dinks than keepers. The good news is you can and will catch limits.

Someone drove into a pond? LOL

I saw 18 cars parked at the spot today. I was like, "nope!"

I took a.walk south of Miller today. I saw no less than 10 camp fire sites, with crazy amounts of trash to go with them. Really pathetic.

The trail on the west bank is really worn in and wide. Easiest travel up and down the creek I've ever seen. It's going to be ridiculous during the sand bass run.

Hi guys, I’d been a member here in the forum for many years although I rarely read. But I started reading more for the past few months. It’s my first time ever to post here. I really enjoyed reading your posts and from others as well. Lots of great tips and good reading that would help a lot of people to enjoy fishing. Thanks to you all for the great and helpful tips, and I love reading your posts.

I only fished Rowlett creek quite a few times in the past several years. And I went there last weekend to try for crappies but to no luck. But I was lucky enough to catch some magnum mama sandies. Surprisingly, all have eggs already but only one has fully developed eggs.

I’m taking a couple of friends from our church to Rowlett Creek this Saturday morning and I’m hoping to help them catch some crappies and have some fun and make great memories for the last day of the year. Although I don’t know where the fish are at this time and what they are biting for. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I would love to meet new friends at the creek and chat with some of you if you will fish this coming Saturday morning.

You all have fun fishing!

All the females will have eggs in some stage of development. We are getting fairly close to the spawn.

Where abouts did you find those sandies if you don't mind? North or south of Miller? PM me if you want.

Last week I saw this styrofoam plate right next to the water with a full meal on it. Rice and potatoes, and some other stuff. Somebody served themselves a home cooked meal at the creek, and left it there. So weird.

I don't get it. If you are going to build a campfire, why not burn the trash you brought in?

Anyone know what they are going to do with the area surrounding the Miller bridge? Are they going to make it into a park? They just move dirt around for no apparent reason. Sure would like to see some grass there or something.

today was skunkky day for 2 hours of fishing! well, most of the time for me at least. would have loved to see my bobber submerged a few times but didn't happen. not a single nibble. i picked the wrong day again apparently. Did chat with one dude, he said that the action has been consistent, but today was very slow. what's new smile I might have to hook up with my sensei again someday to regain my touch and confidence. or kfj can hook me up someday. smile

Fished RC this morning and crazy enough there are a other people who braved the winter chill. Managed to land a handful of small crappie and missed a lot of thump, can't even feel my fingers. Met Jimmy along the way and I too managed to land a sand bass. I totally did not expect that but the only keeper of the day, a thick 12 incher. If you dare brave the winter chill tomorrow wear a lot layers, the bottled water I brought with me was chilled. Be safe everyone and tight lines!

I fished for about 30 min this evening at Miller bridge. The water cleared up quite a bit. I didn't find any fish there, but I heard there was a few fish caught south of there.

I wish they'd stop tearing up the place with all that heavy equipment. It's a muddy disaster. All they've done for the past year is move piles of dirt and mud around for no apparent reason.

we have had several good spawns for the last few years, fish should be big and prolific. They'll get smaller as the winter crop fish teter out and the actual 'run' gets started sometime in march, then (hopefully) the numbers of big female sandies should be very good in peak run in April this year. I'm looking forward to it.

yes, jump the curb, but beware, that area gets nasty muddy after any type of rain. Be careful if it has rained any time recently, 4x4 only after recent rain.

i was out exploring that area last weekend, and I t looks like there's no parking near pleasant valley road and the trail up from firewheel kind of ends where the little stream comes in.

If that's correct, how can you access that part of the river? West bank only?

Posted By: DallasCB4

Re: Rowlett Creek 2016-2017 - 02/10/17 03:23 AM

Ive seen plenty of people walking out with stringers and buckets full, but Im guessing they get there early! About every time Im getting there they're pulling their stringers out of the water and heading home. Ive seen banks with about 20 fishermen and about everyone getting skunked. 4 out of 20 actually pull a limit, because they probably hit the "deep holes". Pressure is kind of high but dropping, Saturdays pressure looks good until about 12pm Sunday. Just have to beat the crowd.
Posted By: TxPacker4

Re: Rowlett Creek 2016-2017 - 02/10/17 02:55 PM

There are fish in the deeper pockets, here and there. If you have several hours to spare or if you find the right pocket, you can work on a decent stringer. Lake temp is 55.... perfect.

Soon guys. Be patient. Everyone cross their fingers and do their rain dance. It'll be easy pickin's before you know it.

Re: Rowlett Creek 2016-2017 - 02/10/17 04:52 PM

A decent run will happen with the rain this weekend presuming we get a decent amount. This warm winter is crazy. The Sandies this year are enormous 16-17 inches and fat fat. Warning: the hybrids are either 17.5 inches long or their 23+ inches. I hope everybody knows how to identify hybrids. Some of these hybrids are the same size as the magnum Sandy's. The hybrids are super fat this year as well. Two of the Sandy's we caught on the main lake yesterday were milting a little bit. The main school of hybrids are near the damn right now. So they're not in any rush yet to come up. It's usually March after a warm rain flood when they show. Reported in the striper section on yesterday's epic day.
Warrior: Park on the bridge at 66, or pop the curb off of fire wheel/rowllet road south east side of bridge. . I'm pretty sure there will be trucks parked in one of those spots.

Its still early. They're staging in the deepest water of the creek, but aren't really spawning yet. Patience is key, it won't be long, my guess is maybe 3 or 4 weeks

Re: Rowlett Creek 2016-2017 - 02/16/17 02:32 AM

For anyone doubting, this is from before the rain. Big fat females. Hubbard fish are HUGE this year. Some you can already squeeze eggs out of, and males milting all over. It doesn't always depend on exact time of year or temperatures. When they eggs/milt are developed/produced, they will make their run and do their thing. A little cold snap, or a less than ideal "cold" rain isn't going to stop them. They're not going to go, "Oh, carp! It's a little chilly. Guess I better turn around and stop developing/producing eggs/milt til it's a little more comfortable." Granted the eggs may or may not survive due to lower water temps, but the fish will still do their thing. There's been years that we were picking ice off of our guides between casts, and catching limits of sandies in less than 2' of water. Bottom line, get out and scout it after the rain. You'll never know until you see for yourself.

And come check out the seminar at Bass Pro Garland at 2pm this Saturday. lots to learn.

First time out to Rowlett Creek and got skunked. Got there a little after noon using jigs with a bobber about 3' up but no love. I am guessing it was getting there around noon and just not knowing the area. I lost a few jigs and even a bobber or two. I did see a few guys catching; most with minnows and I think I saw one guy with a small spoon.

All caught on Lunker City tiny flukes, 1/8th Stump Jumpers, or white/chartreuse Thump Buddies jigs.

Re: Rowlett Creek 2016-2017 - 02/20/17 03:41 PM

Hey all! New to this forum but have been fishing around DFW a good amount this past year.

The bite really turned on from dusk to maybe 8:30 last night just east of miller bridge, all crappie. Went home with 3 keepers, but I came in around the tail end of the bite and the other anglers I was fishing next to probably went home with around 10+ each.

I kind of stumbled upon the night bite by chance after getting skunked in the late afternoon, and followed the lights to see what was going on and the action was hot! The nice people along the bank let me use some of their night gear and we were pulling our crappie almost non-stop for that hour. Never been night fishing before, but it was definitely a good first experience, and the people were super friendly too! I was told that the fishing usually wasn't always quite that good, but was probably better since it was right before the rain.

I am wondering why the fishing for crappie was so tough during the day though, i was hitting brush piles and log jams wherever i could find, but not a single bite. Used both tiny flukes and white rooster tails. Also wondering if it's even worth trying again after the rain...

P.S. Would post pictures but didn't have my phone at the time

Yeah it was tough going today. Pressure was rising so fast I thought the fish would have lockjaw but there was no way I was staying home. Sometimes you just have to go with your gut and go against science. The spot where I did good last Friday and Saturday was a total dud. Not one bite in 45 mins. It was time to move. Caught up with KFJ and we got into the crappie pretty good. Tons of juveniles though. Not long after I had the pleasure of meeting and fishing with Ben and Chris. Good men and fishermen! It's funny because last weekend I didn't catch not one crappie and today I didn't catch not one sandy or hybrid. Although I had to fight juveniles I did end up with 9 keepers. Gonna be cold in the morning gentlemen! Be safe and tight lines.

Went to Rowlett Creek Preserve Saturday evening. After dark I met a fellow named Johnny who had a small cooler of sandies and was slayin em, one right after another. I was using the same bait but got skunked.(???) Johnny gave me a few fish to take home and when I told my wife about it she laughed her [censored] off for about five minutes. Re: Rowlett Creek 2016-2017 - 03/04/17 04:46 PM

Fished the preserve last night from about 9-11:30. It was slow but they where there, the water was murky as stated earlier by the other anglers. I caught 4 male white bass about 13" milting away and 1 crappie about 10" let I threw them all back. I lost one fish i assume was a hybrid it hit hard and was fast and mean, it straighten my minnow hook out. I seen a few guy pulling them in for a while not sure if they kept them it was dark and they left around 10pm. The cloudy water and the cold snaps seem to be keeping them at bay.

The bigger hybrids come out at night off of cork and jig about 2' apart. These were the 2 biggest out of the limit. The others were about 1-2" smaller. Took about 30 mins to limit and that was me being picky. Go out and get y'all some!! Some people think it's hard to fish for hybrids and sandbass but it's not that hard. Don't over think it. Just have fun with it! Confidence is key and don't be afraid to ask other people (if they are catching) what they are using.

Depends on where u fish. If ur fishing from firewheel and up then waders might be best. I would suggest you go with someone who is fimiliar with the creek.

Re: Rowlett Creek 2016-2017 - 03/07/17 02:21 PM

There's plenty of other creeks other than RC to fish and have better chances of catching more fish. Also you dont have to deal with the crowds.

Bust out google maps and put in some work. It'll pay off big time.

Re: Rowlett Creek 2016-2017 - 03/09/17 05:53 PM

Don't let all those cars and trucks out there fool yall into thinking your going to whack them!! I have been there probably 8 times in the last 10 days. Out of the 40-50 people I see out there you will only see 3 or 4 actually catching any. I have done better than 90% of the people out there and that aint really saying much.

You can even be fishing shoulder to shoulder with some of those guys and they can be catching them and you wont even get a bite. Creek Sandies have a different mind set than when they are in open waters. They will leave you scratching your head at the end of the day.
Posted By: fishing_tom

Re: Rowlett Creek 2016-2017 - 03/09/17 05:58 PM

That's weird... My friend and I did well yesterday evening all caught with artificials, two hybrid keepers as well. The only pressure that matters to me is the amount of people fishing a hole and how many fish are being caught at that hole.

I was there this afternoon for awhile. Wasn't many people and I couldn't figure out why until I started fishing. The whole creek is full of pollen pods that end up on your lure and line every cast. Makes for a real challenge to catch anything when you have to clean your lure after every cast.

because no raining and the weather get hot early that's right the algae is blooming and you saw not many people fishing, good new's from this weekend to next whole week have chance raining,so the creek will get some fresh water and clean the trash for selfish people they left there. loco

If it rains hard, the creek won't be fishable, but it will bring up a lot of fish. It will be on fire next week.

Re: Rowlett Creek 2016-2017 - 03/24/17 09:48 PM

Fished under Firewheel 8 to 10.
2 whites 1 yellow and 10 little crappie. Rain chased me off.
Curious is the run on or ending. Kind of slow for all the times I have been. Most people catching 5 or 6.
Is this creek tough fishing? Or are there just not many whites that come up?
I go to Nueces by three rivers and it is automatic limit every trip. Can't be the fishing pressure because Nueces is packed at the same 300 yd stretch and everyone keeps pullin limits over and over daily for 3 months. Just curious I'm not from Dallas area

USGS site shows it got up to around 600cfs, it's at 400 now. Normal is under 100. It got about 3ft higher than normal.

Not a huge rain event, but significant.

I was there Thursday afternoon/evening a little bit farther down the creek from there and watched those carp the whole time right in front of me. Swimming lazy on the surface and occasionally sampling the pollen/debris on the surface. Threw everything at them but they were not interested! Did see plenty of possible sandies jumping out of the water on the far side of the creek bank from me but could not get them interested in anything either! LOL. Friggin fish all over but skunked. Was there Wednesday too and hooked a small catfish on a minnow but that was it other than a sandie that jumped off my hook early on. I think I need a guide! This is getting frustrating.

Re: Rowlett Creek 2016-2017 - 03/25/17 04:36 PM

We have only had one run so far. I'm sure more have pushed up during the flood we just had. There still a solid months of limits to come. Cold front and rain obviously did not help. But we are still catching limits. Before the rain, we were catching limits. We are off today due to the flooding has muddied the water. Monday We will be back to normal and limits will be pulled out again.

I feel ya jimmy. Bout couple weeks ago we were killing em on a school of fishes. Dude came and stood right over em, even after we told him fishes were right near the bank. Well he threw some jigs at them and they didn't want any. (Karma) roflmao but it's expected cause we all share the creek. But manner is taught at a very young age some people were never taught. Pulled in next to the huge crane on Pleasant Valley. Not sure if I could park there but saw six other vehicles so I figured it was ok. Probably only allowed because workers not present. Good for us because I have been wanting to try further north upstream. Not as crowded. Also did fairly well there last year. Went to fast water and just beyond to deep hole. Not one soul there. Could be great for me. But not usually. Someone would be there if it was hot. There are NO secrets. Too many people know this creek. Just as I suspected zero nada goose egg . Well better move quick only have 2 hours. Started really late. On my way back under pleasant valley game warden stopped to have a few words. Said it was tough fishing this year. Odd year to figure out. He did say a few people did good.
After that headed 300 to 500 yards further downstream. Stopped right after the big pipe and before the current ( shallow area) It did get good for 15 minutes. I had to bump minnow off bottom. Also the more lively minnows got hit immediatley. So not a bad trip. Caught 12 lost 3. I'm still scouting a lot of this creek and others. I'm new to the area. Totally starting from scratch in all these lakes and creeks. It's a challenge but fun to try and figure these fish out. A lot different than areas I fished down south. Crappie will be next wild goose chase.

I actually entertain the loco fisherman to fish and learn from the Bueno fisherman. Nature is bountiful enough to be shared with everyone.

It is by fishing with the buenos they'll learn the ethics of fishing and sharing the bank with other fishermen.
Although it can be a pissy experience for some like KFJ had, I'd tell them if they want to fish by my side it has to be in synch with my cast he waits then he cast so we don't get tangled. I remembered fishing in synchronicity at DD long time ago and we were like a production line. When one hooks up shouts fish on and everyone raised/lower/retrieved line/pole. Until one "loco" ruins the rhythm and leave his line with shad and tangle everyone roflmao
We need to convert locos to buenos LMAO!

Re: Rowlett Creek 2016-2017 - 03/27/17 09:39 PM

so a funny story about pot lickers on my latest fishing trip. i was at the creek by myself with no one around me until i landed my first 2 hybrids and sandie within five to 10 minutes of being there. a few folks downwards saw what i was pulling up and i had a little village around me within minutes. i had roughly about 12 people around my area trying to catch fish but i didn't mind so much as long as they didn't snag my lines and knew when to take turns.

i was landing a fish pretty consistently with my setup while the village wasn't getting a single bite. i caught enough for my keep at this hole so i started tossing my catches towards the others and wished them good luck on catching it since i threw the fish back near their lures LOL

happy fishing everyone!

RC will be always crowded during weekends, regardless whether Jimmy posts his fish photo's or not, until the season is over. I, for one, appreciates Jimmy's sharing the information. I recall TarponFly also did that before.

Hey Jimmy. I just start fishing about half year ago. Chasing these hybrid and sandy. drove all the way up from garland to tawakoni dam.. last year just to catching these. It's a long drive.. Past few week I sit for good 4 long hour on 1 spot under the bridge 66 on centerview rd Not even a bite. where should newbie like myself start? As i read people go up and down but i'm paranoid with snake.. Known snake are there i'm too afraid going to go up and down the creek myself.. Any clear spot that i could try at? Driving 1h30min to tawokani is too far.. I go fishing on the week day anyway... Thanks so much! sorry my broken english.

You could catch hybrids, sandbass and all other kind of species from the spillway of Ray Roberts and Lake lewisville when they releasing water.

Re: Rowlett Creek 2016-2017 - 03/28/17 03:08 AM

I never had a problem with folks posting pics of their catches. There are hundreds of places to catch fish on Rowlett creek and those who post pics never tell which hole they got them from. I doubt if they fish the same spots each and everytime. The creek changes every year and every rain and there are no hotspots that produce day in and day out. Sandbass are simple fishes to catch but if you don't have the right technique on Rowlett creek you will go home empty handed. Trust me because I learned this lesson the hard way. My first year I caught 1 fish on four trips. I caught that one fish on my very first cast and fishless after that. How to fish Rowlett creek has been posted many times over. The problem is many ignore the tips and do it their way. They then go home empty handed and frustrated. Tarponfly gives instructions every year and every year folks post about not catching fish while a few are slaying them. If you hire him you will find he does exactly as he says. Catching fish will be secondary. The most important thing you will gain is confidence. Time on the creek will build your confidence and once you figure it out you will catch fish year after year. It's the small details that makes the difference. Pay close attention and get you some.

Re: Rowlett Creek 2016-2017 - 03/28/17 06:20 AM

This afternoon on Firewheel about 40 cars, good luck finding a spot. All hotspots are loaded with fishermen casting into same hole. Did see about 8 limits taken so they're in there. Caught a few upstream. Scout and if you can't find a spot, make your own spot!

I prefer peace and quiet. I think the loud noise above have affect on the bites, what do you guys think ?

Re: Rowlett Creek 2016-2017 - 03/28/17 10:06 PM

I think creek fish are easily spooked. They are pretty vulnerable there. Out in the lake though, people beat on their boats with rubber mallets, and the fish run to the sound.

Fishermen do funny things. They install slient decking materials to be stealthy, but send a 3ft roller into the bank they are about to fish because they come in so fast.
Posted By: TarponFly

Re: Rowlett Creek 2016-2017 - 03/29/17 01:14 PM

Fish can't hear. No ears.

They feel you coming through vibrations.

I can do a cannonball in the creek on top of the hole I'm fishing. Swim back to the bank stand up and catch a fish within a couple minutes. They don't really care. Think of all the carp that are in there jumping around, that does not spook them.

Last year we were netting shad in a very small hole. We catch 30 or 40 Sandies and throw them back but keep the bait. Immediately put on a bait and cast into that same hole and instantly hook up.

If you've ever been in my boat, you will see me slapping the water with a rod making all kinds of noise and beating the boat with a broomstick making noise to attract them to me. Every once a while you can slap the water in front of you were in the creek and sometimes that gets them going a little bit.

So in conclusion, Sandy's don't care about noise when they're in the creeks. They're just there to make babies and eat

Your catch ratio will definitely go up if you drop down to 4 pound line. Is absolutely amazing people that give up trying on their own and come to me. Everybody has 6 to 12 pound mono on the rods. Do what you want think what you want use what you want. I just tell you what works best And you can go from there.

Well he threw some jigs at them and they didn't want any. (Karma) roflmao but it's expected cause we all share the creek. But manner is taught at a very young age some people were never taught. This nitwit 9point and his friends were standing in the water middle of the creek as I came to fish that same spot from the bank for less than 5 minutes and left, and it's over 30 feet away from them and still got complain that I have no courtesy and standing right where they were casting, talking about ill manner people bang . Did I jump to the water? No I was just standing from the bank. I left that spot after less than 5 minutes since they were too loud. I've been fishing the creek for over 20 years and been fishing with Carey many many times, fishing next to KungfuJimmy several time this year, knowing countless nice and courtesy fishermen. Last time I checked as fishing from the bank, I need to be courtesy with fellow fishermen and that is not standing too close, not casting over their lines, not talking to loud...etc and now I guess I need to add that not standing from the bank where people think the fish were there LOL. Next time if I ever see your face out there which I hope not, I will run away because I don't want to spook your fish LOL.

Too many people on this forum complaining about all the little things. Just go out there and fish! It's a big creek, there are hundreds of holes to fish and they all hold fish. Keep in mind that not everybody is on the same skill level or awareness level. If someone is standing over a hole or getting to close, just move... Anyways... Bite was good in the morning (fished from 10-12) yesterday. All caught on small jigs. Afternoon bite was Much slower unless you're cheating aka using minnows.

If you rigging up to go out tonight, you should probably rig up some rock climbing harness, a life jacket, and a flare gun.

It really does make a difference. Just set your drag appropriately, and tie good knots. You'll break off some, but the increase in catch rate is more than worth it.

oh heck no i'm not going after a fresh rain. hellllll no....i learned that years ago when i almost had to spend the night out at rowlett creek. i went down there with just tennis shoes and my fishing gear and it rained pretty hard. a buddy and myself were stuck in a steep area and we couldn't get out and it was so hard to see with the tremendous amount of rain coming down. we had to tuck ourselves under a tree to cover up and after the rain he had to boost me up to get hold of a branch to get a rope

I plan to make a visit tomorrow. One of my good neighbors loves fishing and want me to take him for some white bass action. Would like to wait 2-3 days by the rule, but time doesn't work out for both of us. I am no expert, but i can catch a few in good days when condition is ideal. Hopefully, i run into Jimmy to show me some light, otherwise, I will be depending on MoonDinger to perform. Thanks for the tip, I will use 4lb line.

Re: Rowlett Creek 2016-2017 - 03/29/17 08:15 PM

It doesn't give your lure more action, the fish don't see it as well and don't feel it moving in the water as much.

Braid has been important to me as well, 30 lb braid has stitched together the zipper on my float tube so I can get out on the water, I was considering using mono but the fish don't seem to see the braid, rock on

Fish see braid just fine. That's why so many people use fluro or mono leaders. But if its working for you then there is no reason to change.

for the creek fishing,i usually used 15 lb braid and the other 8 lb line pod, because i don't like use minnow's as like a machine and if the line too light will let the hybrid break off ,but every one has their own favorite, the point is had fun and catch some fish. whip

Re: Rowlett Creek 2016-2017 - 03/30/17 03:18 AM

A few years ago I caught a 8 pound hybrid on 4 pound test. Just make sure you set your drag before you hit the creek. Most of the hybrids I have seen break off do it when the fisherman attempt to lift them from the water. This is a huge no no. I carry a foldable net in my backpack which works great.

Re: Rowlett Creek 2016-2017 - 03/30/17 04:55 AM

8lb braid with 4-6lb leader works great for me .. if they break me off I got fish story about the big one that got a way. The elusive 30 lb hybrid that I almost landed, fought for 30 minutes and as I see it lying on its side as I reel it in close to the bank it took its last gasp of air and shook its big head staring at me and said adios amigo....not today...not today! roflmao

On a more serious note it's fishing and not catching. Just go out there and get your line wet. Someone really texted me about limiting out early this morning so bite is on!

What are y'all using as bait? I must be doing something wrong. I've been using 60lb braid with a 12lb leader and a little snell with live minnows and haven't gotten a single bite. Could someone shed some light on this? Not sure if I should use a swim bait, live minnows, and how to rig the minnows up if that's what y'all are using. Thanks.

You're not joking aren't you? 60LB braid? I don't even use that size for stripers at DenisonDam? Like I said I use 8 lb braid with 6 lb leader. If I was to use live bait I put a very light weight so the minnow can swim and get some attention. I was fishing last week using minnows (yes I cheated lol!) and the guy across the bank was using minners too. His dies within a couple of minutes and mine swims happily all day long. You want you minners almost freelined. Anywho I honestly think your lines are too heavy and minners are not happily swimming. I hook mine in the front lips. thin wire hooks as well.

Funny thing about these live baits, it's been years since i used them and when Redd Man told me to use em roflmao I tried jigging it after my first cast lol...Good luck guys have fun, beware of snakes and those locos loco

It's my catfishing pole, I normally have 30lb braid when I catfish but I rigged 60lb braid because I was down in corpus 2 weeks ago. I know bass fishing and catfishing like the back of my hand, but haven't been sand bass or hybrid fishing in a long time. I had no idea that the type of line you use can affect fishing that much. Thank you for your help!

The creek was on Fire today. I brought a pound of minnows and never needed them. I did use them after I limited out to try to catch a hybrid. Had one on but it ran me into some brush and broke off. But anyways it was a great day of fishing.

1/8 chartreuse rooster tail is easiest for a beginner. 6 lb line . There are many hybrids in the creek. So have your drag set right or snap. Try an area 15 minutes if nothing move a little.

Thank you Jimmy and otherss helping me make my 1st trip to Rowlett creek today, close to the bridge/parking. Three hours of minnows, worms, lures, etc. and Zero catch. Not discouraged, used it as a scouting opportunity. None of the 10-15 folks around me pulled out a single fish today. Changed spots a little but no bite. Fish were there, splashing at times, but were not in mood, probably due to weather and clouds coming in. Hoping others had better luck.

So lets see if I understand what you are saying. I think you are saying that people showed up every day when they saw how good you were doing. I am to assume you didn't like this (because you have complained about the crowds before) so you posted some epic Hybrid stringers to keep people away that you didn't even catch that day. Re: Rowlett Creek 2016-2017 - 04/09/17 12:31 AM

Jimmy is the real deal and a hell of a guy. Nicest guy you will ever meet and is willing to go out of his way to help anyone who is wanting to learn, with tips and techniques and even gear and tackle if need be. Many already know this because they've fished with him, including myself. I don't post on here often anymore but I still lurk sometimes around spawn time. Jimmy gets the fish, don't even doubt it! He can outfish MOST RC guys 10 to 1, and that's not a challenge...it's a FACT. Jimmy has SO many pictures of limits he's caught on his phone, I'm sure he just posted the wrong current pic and if you notice...he corrected it, like the standup guy he is.

For those flaming Jimmy, maybe if you'd shut your piehole long enough you just might learn something. Doubtful, but I have faith you're not actually THAT stupid...

Anyways, keep it up Jimmy. Haters just jealous.

Re: Rowlett Creek 2016-2017 - 04/09/17 12:53 AM

Jimmy met me at RC and showed me some holes, lures and techniques. He fished side many side with me that day and on other days. He goes out of his way to help people and will do everything he can to help complete strangers catch fish and never asks for anything in return. Not really a guy that anyone should disrespect IMHO.

Re: Rowlett Creek 2016-2017 - 04/09/17 01:22 AM

Everyone makes a mistake once a while. I think what's important is that Jimmy has done a lot of positive things to many newbies asked for a rope and Jimmy gave them when no others. That's the bottom line. Personally never have met Jimmy but that kinda act reflects his character.

Also, let's not get confused about his original intent. The way i interpret his intention is that He showed the spots so they can get an idea where to look for fish, not making them become a inconsiderate selfish person. His job was not to reform someone's character which is not within his control, nor does he have any idea what kinda people he is dealing with as all of them approached Jimmy as nicest guy possible as simply they want something from him. So, let's give guy break, that's all i saying...

This is forum getting ridiculous. I'm new to fishing and reaching out for help. WHhat i realized 5% are here really trying to help people, either you are advanced or new beginner they still and willing to help others. The rest Either trying make some money, show off, jealous and lots of hater. to those people just yapping yapping talking like they know it all. You might be fishing for 10, 20+ years so what? what have you give back to the community? I rather hang out with people don't know how to fish but with open mind than hang out with bunch of clowns ignorance people.

Don't forget where you come from that's what the wise man said. Now you can catch fish , known more spots better catching more fish than other. So what? When you first start at fishing we all have struggle. We all go through learning at some point. Most forgot why we here and how you started in the first place already? Instead being Ignorance, selfish fkk, think you know it all and most of yall do is just brag see how fish better than who. Hey i caught More than you today, tomorrow you come home with a few fish when other catching more than you than you get jealous talking sht about other catch. There's plenty of fish for everyone. I dare you go over the limit take picture of your self with the fish and show to everyone. In the end most ppl coming home with the limit anyway.

I see ya'll attacking Jimmy for ridiculous reason, when he out there helping tons of people. those think they are elite, you're so pro skilled at fishing, how come no one saying thank you to you? cause you haven't done a jack or help anything to other accept sit on your butt and become keyboard warrior. Shame on ya'll. I don't know him but i reads lots of post, only 5% people that i'm really admired. Just because their personality. Who go out their way to help other, with no return. They are different then the rest. Just because people do things for you and doesn't ask anything to return but atleast you try put some afford at least for something. " hey want some water? hey want some my snacks?" My mama tough me well smile Oh yes there's people will take advantage of you. Karma is a btch, don't you forget that. Ofcouse hater all day hating, You don't need anyone admired you. it's your life it's your fish and being ignorance btch. good for you.

It's a forum alright, The "Internet" ok i got it. People, different personality Amen. Most of people here are adult and saying you're professional . so act like one. Most the post i see is flaming, hating like 5 year old child fighting over a candy. punch of clowns trying be tough and trolling over the internet. Turn this nice sport into a ridiculous war. Isn't fishing is about make friends and share knowledge why can't people get alone once for all?

I don't go on here often any more smile so it's going take awhile for me response. I'm hanging out with the cool people staying away from the no brainier smile

But if you see me real life don't try put your hand on me not worth it smile

If so you ought not do that where people gonna walk. I am sure the next person that walked through there thought it was just morning due on the overhanging plants. If they only knew......

You represent Texas Oklahoma fishing guides when you post on here so when you post something stupid on here or condesend someone it makes Carey look bad. So why don't you just keep your mouth shut.

I love reading about rowlett creek drama every year! Makes my day! Thanks guys

Re: Rowlett Creek 2016-2017 - 04/10/17 10:00 PM

what's crazy is that it has been going on back and forth for about a freakin decade!! hahaahahah. every year there is creek action at RC and every year we will have groups that come in and out fish others.

forget the drama and let's go back to fishing.

ran into dipson and his crew on sunday and we had an ok time fishing. overcast probably slowed it down some but we all still caught something.

tight lines and tight chim for everyone

Re: Rowlett Creek 2016-2017 - 04/11/17 03:34 AM

Haven't fished Rowlett since the mid 90s.
No internet. Mostly good people sharing a spot and a few tricks. Most of y'all were probably youngsters then. Stray bullets from the gun range, less construction, same problem with litter, same smells I bet. Did I mention no internet?
Good times. Make Rowlett great again! Or not roflmao just lightening it up. True about the 90s.

If I were going, I'd hit it this evening or tomorrow. Throw paddle tails. Catch hybrids. They bite just fine in muddy water. People say wait for it to clear, but i think they just want the creek to themselves.

you think its that easy, go ahead and try it. They will bite but the lure of to be smack right now in their face, and not to mention the slick mudd.
