Fish ID? - 06/18/15 05:14 PM

This was found laying dead on the side of our neighborhood pond and all of the neighbors are trying to figure out what it is. Not the best picture but maybe someone here can identify. Thanks!

got a picture of the whole fish? It's not a native species, I think we can say that much.

Really doesn't look like a bowfin to me.

Yeah, the jaw and coloring is definitely different from a bowfin.

Nope. Those are not piranha teeth. I don't know what that fish is but I 100% know that's not a piranha.

mangrove snapper. saltwater fish found in the gulf, they inhabit brackish water
as well, but not fresh.
not only the teeth, but the eye, the approximate size based on other items in the pic & the gold scaling on the cheek are a dead giveaway

this is why I said prank popcorn2

I believe I'm with lite-liner on this one. Not a goldeye or bowfin(grinnel).

100%. Its a mangrove snapper, and piranha have teeth more like a shark, not needle like.

Definitely not Piranha - Piranha teeth are indeed more tapered like a shark and interlock - not needle-like as these are.

I'm sure the OP will gladly donate the snapper to you, L-L.

I hope to catch a few fresher specimens from the yak next week near Port Aransas.

LoL!
You'll be about 3 weeks ahead of me, but you can count on a bunch coming over the side into my bag! they can be pretty hard to get sometimes, but I love em
fight harder & taste better than Red snapper by far
