benbrook report - 11/08/13 12:12 AM

went out to benbrook for a bit. Got about 3 blacks for which was good for the amount of time I was there. I was using a red crayfish rattletrap. I am beginning to like that lure more and more. Anyway...ended up losing it so in a week of fishing I have lost four crankbaits in various lakes realmad My pops bought me a lure retriever so guess I will see how that works.

oh well I love crankbait fishing so guess that's part of it. Going to go for cats at benbrook saturday or sunday I will post results. Loving this fall fishing!

Where are you fishing on the bank at benbrook? I live about 10-15 minutes from the lake. Id like to do some catch and release on some black bass...

Hey bankstuck I could use any advice your willing to give. Tried benbrook twice last week. Fished the east shoreline by the dam and the shoreline at mustang by the boat ramps. Threw a spinner and silver rattle trap and slab o shad. Not a single hit.

Benbrook is tough, but it has good fish. I caught the one in my picture below on a jig there. East side has a ton of drop-offs right off the bank. I want to say it goes from bank to about 15 ft about 15 yards out, but don't quote me on that. I think thats what I remember from the last time we kayaked out there. I've caught some good fish there on jigs, cranks, and jerkbaits off the bank, and I know a lot of guys have luck with c-rigs.

Side note, theres about $100 worth of lures at the bottom of that lake from me, too. Price you gotta pay to catch some good fish though!

It really depends on the lake level and how low the lake is as far as dropp offs and things of that nature go. I think it fishes much better when the lake is low only because the fish have less places to move and hide. Benbrook is very hit or miss though. never really been a consistenet lake but it can give up the goods just like the rest. Still one of my favorite lakes to hit up.

yea unfortunately my advice on that lake isn't much. Very hit or miss for me too. I'm learning the lay of the land right now. Probably go out again today or tomorrow so will post more. I watched a honeyhole episode on youtube and he was tearing em up on a crankbait by the dam...but that was a couple of years ago and editing does miracles! the lake was way...way down. keep ya posted!

Re: benbrook report - 11/17/13 02:50 AM

so went out tonight for about 3 hours....man it was windy eek The only thing I caught was plenty of shad and a chunky perch in my cast net. That was one plus though...getting shad was pretty easy with that wind hitting the dam side like it was. I threw out some cat rigs but no luck. Fished for bass a little too. I usually like fishing the windy side but today was kinda crazy. oh yeah... I did find a 10 dollar rapala so the trip wasn't a complete failure.

Take the front hook on your bait and fold it back to the belly of the bait
You should have one hook on each side, cut off the hook facing forward with a good pair of side cutters and "cut it close"

You can bang rocks much better with baits like Rattle Traps
I did it to all my lures for years when I chased the green ditch fish

thanks for the info guys! Good idea with the cranks catboss, seems like a common sense thing I should have done a while ago! Went out today with a tffer and saw a dead 30 pound blue by the dam...That's the biggest cat I have ever seen personally...kinda sad but just spurred my growing fever for blues.....ha.

Re: benbrook report - 10/05/14 09:50 PM

i've gone 2 times, 1 time right after the crazy rain. saw a couple people fishin near the dam. but i dont think anyone was able to catch anything.

today i went and it was a little windy for about 20 minutes i was out there and started to die down a little. still nobody caught anything. some people caught a baby bass (not sure what type either a hybrid or sandy) and also a boat couldnt catch anything either.

i normally dont go after the rains, but i wanted to test out my new reel.

Fishing for me at night has been good around midnight at the dam, baja or longhorn.I fish for blackbass at night throwing black n blue senkos and usually do pretty good on windy points around rockycoves and drop-offs.On extremely windy days go with a heavier swimbait hook and deliberately smash it up against the rocks and pause for 5 seconds. You can definitely fill the hit, keep moving until you find the sweetspot of an area. You can't work it as fast as a crankbait but you can catch fish over 5lbs with consistency.GoodLuck! :-)

If you want to catch big fish at Benbrook use the Force Luke.
Throw black and blue jigs and black/blue worms anywhere around rocky points and bluffs and drop offs.Texas-rig or swimbait style, don't be surprised if you hook into a monster especially after all this rain.
