denton creek at 377

has anyone tried or have any reports of the fishing in denton creek!! looking to get into some action!! any and all info is thanked in advance!!

I went East atleast a mile from the bridge and got nada! Water was high (versus what I saw in the Spring) and I've got no DC game.

I was with fishybiz on the trip he wrote about. I took my toon and put in at Marshall Creek park a week or two before and saw a lot of fish on the Hummingbird but did not catch any. I want to go scout it again soon just to see if there is a winter crappie run there

still to early there, it doesn't fish the same as RC for sure.

When does the fishing get started there? Fished it 20 years ago but seems it was at the end of the sand bass run going into crappie time.

I'm kinda wondering the same thing No Net. I'm just getting back into fishing. I fished the sand bass run on DC last spring and it started around March I think. Some of the Grapevine old timers say the Vine is one of the late lakes for the spawn so maybe the crappie don’t move into the creek till Feb.

Go South, it is a good 10 to 15 miles, or 35w to 1171 east, to 377 south, there's also the South Lakes Park ponds stocked with trout, in Denton.

Oh, Hickory Creek at Old Alton Rd is right there at 35e and Swisher.

the last time i was there we hit the sandies but that was a couple of years ago!!

I went about during the winter break during school and heard someone unload a couple of rounds out there. Scared the carp outta me. It was close too.So if ya'll go, be careful. Oh, all I caught were small sandies.

I'm gettin itchy to do some creek scoutin. Probably need a little more rain followed by some warm days. Not everyone knows that the Blues also like to visit Denton Creek. I was there one day when a shad fillet was a fish on every cast, three pounds and up. One of the few days in my life when I actually caught all I wanted. Several in the 8 pound range and two over 15 pounds. Never forget that day.

Yes I want DC to get busy. I've made the trip to Rowlett and may do it again on Monday but Denton Creek is much closer to the house.

Yesterday I paddled my yak from Marshall creek ramp all the way to 377 yesterday fishing every brushy spot high and low with jigs of many colours....nothing (other than a workout).

Last year we killed them in there but the water is very different this year.

went down to creek by 377 brig. was a slow day but did get a few sand bass.water is up and looks good.

That's the kind of information I was looking for. If there are a few now then with these warm days it wont be long. Yee Haa

Whatlures/bait/techniques do you fish the creek with? I've been by there several times, but am new to fishing a creek like that

The absolute cheapest jig heads with a white or chartreuse curly tail grub. 1/8 OZ. On the right day a limit is no problem. Long as you can carry them out. That's the hard part.

How about old fashioned directions? Take 377 North from 114 (right there where the Wal-Mart is) go about a mile and where Denton Creek crosses there is a bridge with a parking area (Rugged) on the North East side. Follow the trail back to the creek and start exploring. It runs miles in both directions. Holler back if you find anything.

Where do you park your truck?

I don't think you'll have any problem figuring that out once you get there. With these sunny days I imagine you'll have plenty company. I park right there on the N/E side of the bridge. There is another parking area just South of there but it's more of a hike from there.

I didnt catch any near the bridge or anywhere on the creek that i tried but the creek looks good it has really steep banks though

Yes those banks have sent more than a few fishermen home early with soggy britches, me and a few of my buddies. Were there many people there? Sorry they weren't bitin. They will be.

What type structure, current, pools etc are you looking for when you fish the creek?

You know how fish are, sometimes all you have to do is hit the water, other times a slow bumpy trip across the bottom will do the trick. D.C. is one of the few bank fishing spots I know of where you can catch a fish on every cast when they are stacked up in there. Guess they're still out in the lake (Grapevine).

Yep, that other parking area will give you access to an area upstream from where you were. Just all kinds of great fishing spots on that creek. Might be out there tomorrow with the clouds gone and warmer temps. Word gets around fast so when they're biting both those lots will be full.

Can't miss my truck it's a 93 F150 dark red with 200,000 miles and lots of branch scratches down the sides. I like to go where few dare to go.

Are the fish biting?

I heard a good report Saturday that some guys limited out on whites and cats in the creek. I did see some good shad action way back in the shallows while duck hunting.

Well I go a minimum of twice a week, last day was Friday. Saw several other guys fishing, some with minnows some jigs. I saw no fish caught, the guy with the minnows had no bites, I had one bite that was it. I have caught no more than 4 on a trip this year. They are not in the creek yet, but I started nailing them the second week of February last year. Will not be long

They are in there already. Fished it twice last week by boat. Found water
temps 49-60 degrees. Caught Crappie and sandbass both.
2in sassy shad or 2in Little Fishy seemed to work equally well.

FYI- there is a new submerged tree west of the 377 bridge apx
200 yds east of the old submerged dam. It is not marked and you can't see it untill U are on top of it and high centered. It is in the direct center of the channel. I
tried but could not get pvc driven into the creekbottom to make it for others but I predict
it will eat more than a fair share of lower units/props as it
was in an area that had been safe to run on plane in years past.
Next time out I will take a jug and tie it onto it.
I got lucky, it only ate my transducer and I was only going
3mph when I ran up on it. I love my metal boat!

Sniper, how many did you catch any females? There are some sandies that stay in the creek year round but generally on the small side, I have caught them during every month of the year to some extent, but not near the numbers or size compared to when they make there run.

Thats a good report but seem early for them to run.All the years I fish the creek crappies come up feb.and sandys later in the mouth.I only been caught the ones that stay on the creek.And I been using Lit'l Fishies.will have to go down tomorrw and see what I can get it will nise if they are some up

no,rain at this point will get them going (kick them off) LOL. If we get rain I think it will be what gets them into the creek in big numbers.

The more rain the better. It fills the creek making it easier for more fish to make the run and the run off water usually brings up the temp. Looks like as of now we will get a good run this year. It is still way early and it won't kick in until March.

Sniper, did you pull any out of the small damn west of 377? That is one of my favorite spots and usually pink maribou jigs have worked the best. I might need to invest in some more sassy shad. My stash is low. I will be taking the canoe out this Sunday afternoon.

Where is this dam at? I hear people say theres a dam there, but i've never seen it. Is it a real dam or a beaver dam?

If you have run a boat much past 377 you would know where that dam is. Most of the time when the water is up you cannot see it. But it is a concrete wall of some sort that runs all the way across the creek. Over the years it has a place on the South side busted up to where you can pull your boat thru even when it is out of the water a few feet. It is wide enough to get out of the boat and walk on the top of it. Maybe 1.5 to 2 feet wide. It will take out a lower unit.

I guess I haven't made it up there that far yet. I took my boat way up west past 377 till I couldn't.I have a 16' deep v tracker.Oh well, Guess I'll eventually run into it.

I caught crappie and full sized Sandbass some bursting
w/ roe.
I did not fish the dam as I was interested in how far I
could go west in the creek by boat. The dam is not far from the bridge at all.

I saw a guy in a 16ft tracker loose a lower unit a few years
ago on it, I towed him back to the ramp.

That new transducer-eating submerged tree is apx 75-100yds downstream
of that dam. And you can't see it untill you are on top of it.
Once section is mid channel the other is closer to the south bank.
I will try to get GPS Coords next time out there.

I know the stump your talking about. That stump is right in the middle of the creek, and it's a big one too. The water must be over the dam because I passed that way a few times and haven't even noticed a dam was there. Thank for sharing guys.

From what I have heard that clear stream comes from the water treatment plant in Roanoke. The baby bass love that spot.

It looks like there is a road/trail that comes in from the back and ends near the dam. Anyone ever try driving it?

Last time I hiked out there in Jan.

A. I slammed the car door on my favorite
rob, breaking off the tip.

B. The reel on my backup rod flew off after
the 3rd cast and landed down the bank
into the water.

C. I slipped and fell in the water attempting
to retrieve my reel and had to swim 200ft
down the creek to find a bank where I could
climb back out of the water.

D. My dog ran off after a squrrill or deer
or bigfoot and it took me an hr to find
her (I was still soaking wet from the swim).

E. And then there was the fun of riding home
wearing only my tighty-whities while sitting
on my floor mats to protect my cloth seat
from my wet/muddy ummmmm.... self. While
my wet/muddy dog ruined the backseats.

Then again I may just stay home today and
take a nap instead.

Wow what a day...Yep that water is some cold this time of the year. First time I took my buddy Doug down there he was fishing around the bend from me. I had warned him about the banks maybe 45 seconds before I heard the splash...HELP!!!...Hehehe..That was it for for that day..And be careful when you're pulling them out because there's always room for more in Denton Creek...

I was out doing a little hog hunting yesterday afternoon and I did hear a boat running the creek so someone was giving it a try. Still a little early for me. I still have not got over the hunting bug all the way with this weather.

Last time I drove the 4 wheel drive into the backroads have all been updated with New No motor vehicle GATES. Good ones.
So its still a good hike from anywhere to the good spots.
Except maybe behind the New building of houses is best bet for banking.
Somereason they been trying to make it difficult to access the best part of that creek for years. every year is worst then the last. From the so called blue hole where henriata creek meets the main creek Denton to the Old dam. I actually fell into that opening trying to cross on a stump. NOT FUN Crappie love that area but hard to acess with Age.

I fished it a lot when I lived in Roanoke and it was pretty much the 3rd to 4th week in February when the sandies started. This was in the warm years too. This year could be later.

With this cold and snow thats suppose to come, it might push it off a little. But if we get a week of sun, it'll be on!

I think a couple of weeks. The temps are coming up over the next several days and its supposed to rain so the warmer rain water will help raise the creek water temp. The down side is to much rain to fast and the creek will turn to a even muddier mess in and out of the water.

Well don't get your hopes too high just yet, more rain and snow is forecast for this week.

I went on FRI midmorning. Saw one other boat. Made it past the
blue-hole for the 1st time in years.
Water has chilled back again with the snow and cold weather.
Warmest I found was 58 deg. Did locate some sandbass and
caught several and released em to fight another day. No luck
w/ the crappie this trip. Most of my usual spots were messed
up by the high water/strong current and choc-milk color.

With the rain this morning and the psbl snow TUE it may push
back the run further.

Note to self- Ignore the wx fcst and wear more clothes. Kept
waiting for it to warm up as advertised, never did.
Left around 2p chilled to the bone.

Oh, to other boaters- The transducer eating tree mid channed just downstream of the old dam is missing. Perhaps relocated by
all the rains earlier in the week. Or perhaps sunk to the
bottom. I couldn't find it this trip. But I am sure it's lurking
there someplace just waiting another chance to cause me
some grief.

Sniper thanks for the report. When you say blue hole is that the hole in a bend with a high cliff on the south side?

nothing blue about it usually but it is where henrietta creek runs into the main channel of Denton Creek, Denton Creek starts from runnoff water just west of justin and goes to Grapevine.
Henrietta Creek is a great way to boat in to the blue hole.
watch for snakes in branches they aint pretty.
Henrietta usually runs clear water or clearer. being it is a smail amount of runoff water it is located off of 114 north of 377 just about 1 mile before you hit the TMS.

under the bridge is pretty good right now parked at the parking area for the bike trails. I caught some there on Friday,caught some in the big hole East of 377 as well, the one that is maybe 200 yards east of the bridge.

Yeah. Not far from the bridge. I went west a little bit upriver. All Sandies from the bank. Watched lots of boats going up and down the creek, but it seemed like there were plenty of fish right there.

Are there two bridges? There seems to be one (north) where you can park by the side of 377 and approach/park on the west side of the road. Then there is one a little farther south where you can also park on the west side, but in a small dirt parking area, and then walk up (north) to the second bridge area.

Was out at Henrietta hole sat and the sandbass are moving in now. We had more luck in henrietta creek in the clearer water. Caught 25 and all were keepers no small ones. They should be there in full force in a week or so. Everyone we saw were catching fish from boat. and bank fishing. Red jighead with a white grub on a spinner was working best for us.....Seems anything white and red were working best then.......

bill 1234 if you are going north on 377 the "dirt/mud" lot on the west side is a great place to park and walk in following one of the trails on the other side of the RR tracks. The first bridge north of there is not the creek but a mostly dry cut through linking the creek. I have never seen water running there. The second bridge is where the creek flows. The next parking area is on the left. You can easily get to the second bridge from there. If you can Google earth it. I hope this helps.

Robert H I’ve not fished the Henrietta hole in several years. Did you walk in or boat and if you walked did you park at 377? I’m hoping to get out there tomorrow or Wednesday.

John, I saw some very few that walked in last week. Years ago the best way is now not access because of paint guns.
But I can tell you this if your final destination is the hole dont walk from 377 you will be looking at a 5miles thru stickers snakes logs streams and mudslides. You would be better off checking out an access off of 114. Lots of new developement out there and Im sure the teenagers got a good path cut.

We were in a boat but from what I could see the guys fishing from the bank were catching just as many. Sat and talked to one bank fisherman that had fallen in. I just heard a big splash and went to make sure he was o.k., he was alright and a real trooper cause he stayed and caught some more fish before leaving...lol.

If you're fishing from the bank be very careful it's really slick!

I may have to hook up with one of you guys walking in there because i'd like to know how to get in there when the water is to low for a boat...

Thanks for the input Lip Rippin and Robert. I have walked from 377 many times but its been several years ago. I have thought about walking in from 114 but I’m not to crazy about parking on 114 and I don’t like what I’ve read about the no trespassing signs, but I may do it anyway. What I would like to do is take my toon from 377 up or but getting it to the water would take several trips from the bike trails parking to the creek to get toon, trolling motor, battery, and gear to the water. I need some Sherpa’s.

I dont know about the toon thing right now, I just read in another post about a guy running full plane in his bass boat through there; thats got to be scary....

Wait until the waters goes down and then its harder for the boats to get back in there.

I don't know if it's the same guy but I was out there today on a spot that was about 6 inches above the water line. He blew threw on plane and looked right at me. I gave him a wave to say thanks a-hole and he just smiled at me and keped on going. I hope he hits that submerged concrete and rips the motor right off.

That was me that came by you in my boat. I am not trying to hurt your fishing chances and I pass by you as quickly and with the least amount of water disturbance that I can. Boats are a part of the sand bass run on Denton Creek. I have always tried to help out the bank fisherman in the creek as much as I can over the years. I give them as many reports as I can to help them to find the fish. I tell them what they are biting on and where they can find them. I know how it is to just get started fishing the creek. I see you are new to the TFF but have no idea how new to the creek you are. I have been fishing it since the early 90's and I will not be hitting anything and knocking my motor off, so you do not have to worry about that. The people on here are looking for information that can help them find fish. They have a off topic area for all the other things you feel you need to talk about. Good luck to you.

Well my friend, I understand your arrogant opinion but I'll tell you that I have been fishing the creek myself since the 80's. For many of those years I have taken my bass boat up there and not once have I blown past a man fishing on the shore disrupting his fishing. I slow down. It's common curtisy. It may not disrupt the fishing but it makes a man have to scramble for his things to make sure they don't float away. Just because you have a boat does not mean that your better than ANYONE fishing that river. Just learn to show a little respect.

P.S. Im new on TFF because I want to share my experience with others so thay can have a good time like I do. I dont need advice.

Well I just checked out your post master of the creek and I don't see anything you have offered to help someone catch any fish. Look at mine and you will see a different story. I think you need a sign that says hey I am quackrjack so I know who you are on the creek. I can be as nice or as not nice as can be. I usually let the other person decide for me.

I'm just wondering, do you get off plane when you're passing personal watercraft-kayaks, canoes or tubers-on Denton Creek? If you swamp them or cause them to flip, I really don't think they'd give a flip about whether or not you offered to help someone on the forum.

Fishead I run those over. I get extra points for that dont I?? I was talking to a couple of my friends earlier that also fish the creek out of boats. They do not slow down or idle through for anything on the creek. On a busy day you would have to stop and go so much you would never get anywhere. They had a stance on it that boats on plane are part of the deal and poeple need to deal with it. I just want everyone to get along and catch some fish and have a good time. I want everyone to pack out there trash no matter whether they are walking or boating. I cannot stand to see the mess some poeple are leaving behind. I even saw one group that drove down to the creek and backed right up to it. How they got there I have no idea. The game warden has there license plate number and a picture of the thing parked there.

Back to the topic at hand...how long do you think it will take the water to receed and the fish to be back on? My brother was up there yesterday in our old 1950's aluminum boat and got skunked. He said the water at the hole was roaring out of the Denton Creek side.

Oh, well, if none of your buds slow down for anyone else either then I say go ahead and run over every other mf'er out there! I don't want anyone slowing me down either when I'm trying to get to my fishing holes and there better not be anyone fishing 'em when I get there! Just go off the river. Fishn was good. the main river is very muddy but when you walk in and get to the little feeder creeks they are full of sandys. every cast you got a fish on. We really did the best on Monday in the poring down rain, but as soon as the rain stoped the feeders got muddy and they stoped bitting. Did just as good in the rain and hail this morning until the mud washed down. Goin out tomorrow.

About mid afternoon I drove out 35w and looked at the creek there it's rolling pretty good. I then drove back south on 377 and yes the water is chocolate milk color but there were 5 or 6 vehicles parked at the bike path and 4 down in the RR lot with 2 trucks parked on the shoulder of the road at the RR lot entrance. Did anyone catch anything today? I will be out there either Monday or Tuesday next week.

I was out there..U might of seen my truck by the bike path...I didnt catch anything..I walked to the first bend East of 377 and then I walked under the bridge West of 377 "NO LUCK"...I didnt stay long, but the water was too muddy and I didnt have time to try and find clear water....If I had more time to walk I might of hooked a few.........

park there again, go west under the bridge, a creek comes in from the north about 100-150 yards in, follow that creek and have fun, limits to be had and the water is cleaner.

Went out there to day about 7am to 9am. I only caught on samll Sandie..Seen alot of boats flying by...I guess they knew where to catch them...All the boaters seem to head up river West of 377. The water is still a little muddy...I guess I might try again next week...

I went out 3-13 at 1130 and stayed until 1400 went east from 377 about 3/4 of a mile. Caught 2 sandies. Water was stained and slightly high but looked much more clear from Wednesday. Went to the same spot on 3-6 and pulled 11 Sandies and 2 Largemouth.

I'm going to hit it later in the week. Hope the water clears up some. I went once last week and got skunked.

I hit a small creek on the Flower Mound side that runs into Marshall Creek and had no luck. I usually do very well there, but not today. Water is very muddy and very little bait fish activity....I counted over 20 cars/trucks on 377 I wonder how they did this morning?

I think its because the barometric pressure has been rising all morning. I went to Rowlett creek this morning and it was super slow only managed 5 or 6 between my son and I just after day break. We fished with BafinBay for a while and he said he caught about 60 yesterday. The pressure was steady and low yesterday. It could be better this afternoon, the presser has dropped over the last 2 hours.

whats the best bait to use?? I want to go on Tuesday and I was just planning on using minnows. and how should i rig the bait.

went up to denton creek this morning. Fished about an hour and only caught 1. Water seems to be clearning up a little though. Everyone I talked to said the fish were up farther. About 6 or so boats came through. Didn't see anyone catch a fish, and lots of people were leaving said the same.

The wife and I went this morning. First cast fish on. Ended up with 14 keepers. Threw several back and probably missed half a dozen....This was in about 3 hours.

I heard from a friend of mine today that he saw a Cop putting tickets on the cars parked on the side of the road on DC Sunday...Iam not sure if this is true but if anyone out there got one lets use know so we will not park on the side of the road......

I parked on the road Saturday. The cops were parked there too, but didn't see them issue any tickets.

Not sure about 377 but they will give you a ticket for parking at 114 and H creek. Saw them doing it last week end. saw 4 cars there today, no tickets when I drove by but just a matter of when the po po drives by you will get a ticket at that spot.

don't know what would be illegal parking on the shoulder of a road as long as it's not posted

Walled from the RR parking at 377 to Henrietta Creek, its a long hike and I’m glad I had GPS. I ran into Fishfinder Frank and his crew there in Franks boat. After a short talk I continued up the H creek. I wore my breathable waders so I slid down a bank and into the water. I started wadding and fishing my way up the creek. I ran into Cousin2, his 4 yo son and a friend. They were very generous offering to let me fish with them and offering a boat ride back to 377. I declined and was glad I did. Just around the bend I started catching fish. I would fish, catch several and move on. I stopped counting at 60 at about 1 p.m.. I caught several big females and several crappie some on rooster tails. I started my trek at about 1045 a.m., got to the H creek about 1130 and fished till about 545. I was going to Roulette Creek this morning but I will be back on the H in the morning. I did take pics and will post them along with what I will hopefully take today.

Took my boy yesterday pm to the same spot. We only managed 6 bite was light and slow, mostly males. Will try to make it back out there by the end of the week.

Slo_One01 I hiked to Henrietta from 377, its about 2 miles and you have to cross a couple of feeder creeks. The trails become very vague in places but I have a tracking app on my phone that helped. I think the run will last a few more weeks. The females I caught yesterday were all fat and there were a lot of them.
I’m off to try it again today, have to work tomorrow through Sat and wont be able to fish till Sunday or Monday. I’ll post today how I do.

Well if you can park at 114 and Henrietta creek, it would be a much easier walk to the fish, heck- they are catching fish right at 114 and the creek where everyone is trying to park, within 100 yards of 114 they are biteing. Might be that some of the cars stayed on the pavement and got tickets for that.

Yeah, The best SandBass fishing I ever did was when u could drive down that dirt road that is now gated off 114..There is an old broke down Bridge there not to far from the HOLE peeps call BLUE HOLE OR HENRIETTA HOLE...I wish u could still drive down to the river..

John, if you are fishing Sunday AM, I can probably join you. I'm planning on fishing RC on Friday AM and it's too far of a drive on Sunday so DC sounds like a good plan since I need to get back by noonish.

Well went back to the same spot as yesterday and did pretty well. Started fishing at 11:30 and limited at 13:30. Could have limited sooner but didn’t want anything below 12". Didn’t catch any crappie today but had a blast on the sandies.

New to forum, great site learned alot from it already from you guys, I was at DC Monday first time with my son, we went a longgggg ways on the west side of 377 caught a couple of sandies on chrt/brown curly tail, saw a guy in waders who said he had caught four or five males, just wondering if anybody else is having any luck on DC and where i might be able to find some crappie for me and the boy to catch appreciate any info ya all could share.

I could about 13 last night west of 377. Chartruse headed roadrunner with a white curly tail grub body.

Stoped at the 35w bridge on my way up to denton for work plenty of parking and easy to get down there with the concrete water run off . Water is swift under the bridge and verry shallow.could see a few spotw further on down that looked deep would be a great place for the toon

I almost fish here at 35 bridge..I drove down there today around 3:30pm but wasnt sure if I could make in my truck...the water looked good..It wasnt muddy it was green and moving..But I did make it out to a spot with a friend of mine on some privet land and cought some good Sandies on the Trinity river coming out of Eagle Mount. LAKE.....We caught I thing 18 keepers in like 2hr..

I have been catching at the creek and have limited out every time since last Thurs. finally been getting into the crappie . I'm in a green boat. normally have my bright orange fishing hat on. hope people can get out to get them some fish. and I do slow down for anyone I see. Goodluck to all

Fished west of 377 yesterday. did not catch a lot fish. But, when I came back to my car, my back window was shot several times by some bolt. Called the police and filed a report. I parked on the side of 377, not at the park spot down. Be careful out there!

Yes, that was me. Did you hear some kind of gun shot while we fishing? I did and did not realize that my truck was the target.

I saw 3 or 4 people at the "pond" that is to the right of the point. They had their backs to the highway and were shooting towards the far bank from what I could tell. That's when I made the boy stay down closer to the water away from the high point. I have always seen shotgun hulls on the ground, is it legal to shoot out there?

Yesterday morning, I got 16 in about 2 hours. I brought my dad back around 2 to get him in on the action and we got skunked. I chalked it up to the low pressure system that was moving in. I know I've been catching them all week at that time of day, and I know there were fish in there.

Im new to this,just try'n to figure it all out.I do alot of bank fishing at denten creek probley about twice a week,i just havent had much luck yet unlike last year i hit limit every time...any good spots would help..and yall think there be bitting tom in the cold?

I think if you are out there twice a week, you probably know more good spots than I do, because I haven't been out here since late last year around November. I didn't catch anything for the first two hours, so I got up and moved about 300 feet or so and the bite was on....you just got to find them sometimes.

I've been thinking of getting a portable fish finder like this one.

that fish finder looks like a cool deal except for the 35' cord. i wonder id you can rig a longer cord to it so it can be fired out a good 100 yards. has anybody tried these fissh finders before?

had to take a break . was scared of getting wet in this beautiful weather we are having. hope this brings the water level up a little. getting allot of shallow spots.

Went fishing friday morning before the front and caught 19 fish kept 7 for dinner. could go all the way up to henrietta bc i had my gf with me. i was using a 1/8 ounce pink/white jig head with a luminescent grub. caught some on road runners and one on a rattle trap. I saw lots of boats some of them were nice enough to slow down as they passed us others would blast by. I saw a boat with a double shorttail mud motor on the back i want one so bad...

Im going to go back and fish tuesday afternoon, wednesday before class, or thursday afternoon. if anyone wants to join me and meet me up there pm me.

Hey DanH, Great Clip of your little girl. Mine is almost 6. I'm gonna try to get her out there later in the week. About to head to Denton Creek now. A buddy and I are gonna try to get a boat up there for the first itme in my career at this creek.

Good luck, I've had a canoe and a jon boat up there a few times, always an adventure. My little one just turned 5, and she's good for a little while before she's ready to head home.

today i passed the bridge on 114 about a mile west of 377 several times while working. i have seen people at this spot for days now and was always wishing i had the time to stop there and fish. however i noticed that two of the trucks were getting the orange sticker treatment by roanoke pd... they were parked well over 50' from the bridge, what is the problem?

I get the stickers when I'm off 114 too, not sure what you need to do. I think if you're anywhere near the shoulder they give them to you. And they're the stinkin "abandoned vehicle" stickers, when they know full well the car hasn't been there 24hrs, sometimes I've had it put on within an hour of stopping. Oh well, what are ya gonna do.

Man Denton Creek is up. We got a Fish n Ski from the lake up way west of 377. All the way to Henrietta Creek and a little ways up it. Caught one little Sandie at Henrietta Hole where it meets Denton Creek. Talked to lots a guys in boats and on bank. No one catching much Tuesday. Maybe things will turn around if we can get some dry wheather. On the bright side it's not hard to get to the water this year.

where are the crappie being caught out there. dont have much prob finding sandies from the bank but im ready to catch some slabs. any help?

Try the deeper holes for the crappie. Let it fall all the way to the bottom and then slow roll it. They usually hit it before it reaches the bottom. Normally you will find a deep hole on the up creek side of each shallow area. Hope that helps.

thanks only caught 3 out of there so far. but that was in henrietta creek. 2 of them were keepers back to back casts 1 male 1 female. the next cast another but it was right on the 10 inch line of my makeshift measurer so i didnt chance it and threw him back

We went yesterday before the storm. Creek was up several feet from last week. We were schooled by an ol'boy that said he hadn't been on the creek in 20 years. Tube jig off of the bottom did the trick, for him anyway. 10 or 12 in about an hour with half a dozen missed fish. Another couple showed up with minnows on the bottom that caught a few.

Hopefully by Sunday it will be down but don't hold your breath.

OMG!!!!! me my dad and my friend went to denton creek but not at 377, its a new secret spot we found and TORE tha sandies up!!!!!!!! it was our first trip out there and we didnt know wat to expect but when we got out there they bit about every 2 casts!!!!! so easy!!!! we started out using different types of road runners and caught a few occasional sandies but i tied on a white rooster tail and started destroying them and my dad and my friend saw that so i guess they got a little jealous and did the exact same thing and came right next to me and started fishing...... their cool right?? but we caught about 70 sandies in about an hour and had to call it quits because of the dark..... hoping on goin next weekend and tearin them up again!!!!!!

Way to go minnowkiller. Good to see someone else getting away from the norm. I found white 1/8 oz rooster tails, small bait works great, would get a strike and usually a hook up on every cast, as well as Zoom tiny flukes with a 1/16 jig fished about 5’ under a pegged bobber. I hope to be back out Sunday or Tuesday for sure. I’ve been sick as he!! since Saturday and am just starting to feel human again.

Funny.... Me and my buddie were up the creek Wednesday and caught 1 little sandie in several hours. We threw everything we could think with no luck. I told him the Farmers Almanac said we were a day earlie. WE laughed it off. The next day you guys are catching fish. YOu guys think the Farmers Almanac thing holds water?

TxRed - we were just west of 377. Most of the time I have my boy with me and we don't venture very far. Short attention span equals short trips most days.

Ive Been goin down there every other 2 or 3 days just about and just pullin sandbass in left and right. Also I will seem to catch a Crappie or 2 each time. Its a good fishing hole and so is the spot right off of 114 by the fireworks stand and the big Adventure park Bill board. Good places to fish. Headin back down there to both spots after school

I went today and got skinked... went to hickory creek (in denton) on the way home and caught 5 whites.

It was pretty bad. water was choc. milk. A few days and it should be good. Just got to let the mud settle.

The Henrietta Creek is right off 114 going towards the Texas Motor Speedway. Its about halfway between the Speedway and the road 377. I go to the DFW adventure park/Paintball park because I work there so that is where I park but i went yesterday and park right off the highway and walked under the bridge and went down stream. Under the bridge has been hammered the last couple weeks and all I caught yesterday was just a crappie and a sandbass but down strem the fish bite rapidly. Just find a good hole or pocket to fish

You can get a bass boat up there it was me in the stratus some guy threw a rock or mud or something at me so I hammered the throttle in the turn and swamped him big time, almost washed his tackle box off the shore. I think bank fishermen need to calm down out there it’s not your privet little river and boaters put a lot more $ into our lakes than most bank fishermen. That $ is what keep are rivers and lakes nice. If you hate fishing from shore so much go get a boat and see if you slow down every time you pass a guy on the bank. ((In a river like that)) Something bank fishermen my not understand is I know the river in some spots it’s to shallow to slow down the back of the boat will dig in hitting the bottom. We have just as much right to be there as yall so just chill out.

On a good note my dad and I ended up with one limit of crappy and 2 limits of sandbass.

What were they hitting on yesterday? I had some pretty good luck this past weekend on white roadrunners. PM me if you don’t want to publically share. The crappie loved the roadrunners more than the sandies did. The evening bite has been good for me but tomorrow we are going to try the morning. I am taking my buddy and our two little boys out tomorrow. We are going to be in my little aluminum boat...no rocks please we do have little ones!

at the current rate of release, grapevine lake is losing just about 4" of water a day and it is almost a foot and a half less than it was just a week ago. After seeing the decline in water level i decided to hoof it this morning. I went north from 114 down Henrietta creek probably 3/4 of a mile or so, hitting the holes along the way, but didn't go all the way to denton creek, only caught 2 and those were in a hole just below some light rapids on a red head jig with pearl white sassy shad body and they hit that on like the first or second cast. That creek is very clear.

went out at 6:30 this morn. with a friend of mine who has a 19 skeeter. we made almost to the split and had to pull through. but after we headed up denton creek to the small rapids it was on . caught 43 nice Crappie and kept 12 Magnum Sandies we caught probably 100 today. and one 2 1/2 ' Gar which was fun on a crappie pole. oh we fished with minnows and green and red jigs and the little fishies. was a great morning hope more can get out and get them some, Good luck

Went out last night about 5:15. Headed down the creek and did a little fishing. When I got back to my truck this is what I found.


I wish all of you guys the best of luck with the rest of the run this year. Unfortunately this is it for me. I will not be going back again. I find it very disheartining that we cannot even leave our vehicles unattended without worrying what may happen. This is the second act of vandelism that I know of this year. If you do park on the side of 377 or 114 beware it could happen to you next. I spoke with the Roanoke pd last night and nothing has happened on 114 yet, and it is legal to park over there.

Georgez and John L good luck guys. I know it did not stop you georgez but it has me. With this economy I couldn't afford to fix it if it happened again.

Roanoke is not the problem on parking on 114 as much as it is the Denton County Constable I think his name is Keene.

Either side just make sure its the north side of the creek. I've parked off both sides of 35W but worry about vandals. I have also fished in both directions. If you go west there is a long hole that can be rather hard to fish from the bank. Going east is easier but there are still some obstacles to get around.

I'm about to make a float from 35W to 377. I've been wanting to explor that water. I've done the float from 407 east of Justin to 35W and it is a good trip.

Ben - This was off of 377 at the south parking area. I was parked up on the shoulder with about 25 other cars. If you get there about 5 be prepared to do some hiking. It was packed.

I have parked in the south lot for years and this is the first year I have ever I have heard of anyone having these kinds of problems. This is terrible, sorry to see this. me and my boys were also parked on 377 shoulder that night, we left shortly after 7:00pm, but didn't notice any damage to anyone's trucks. I just can't believe some people.

I feel so sorry to see another case of this happen again in such a short period this year, and sorry to see another fellow fishman abandon the spot. I have been going back as normal and catch a lot of fish. However, I will begin to park my car down at the parking lot below the road. When my little gas outboard arrives, I will launch from the lake with my little boat.

had a great day Sat. couldn't get to the hole so I beach my boat and fished the shallow rapids just before it , caught a 35 to 50 than drifted my way out. fish seem to be setting on all the rock and sand points. seen our good friends the wardens up there trying to get past the shallow but couldn't the manage to get out and check a few license's which is always nice to see. hope the water stays up enough to get up that way. fishing is great right now.. if you see me out say hi..I'm always wearing my orange catching hat.

Yea, thats really pretty low thing to do!! Started to park there the other day too, but decided to drive around to that Dfw motorcycle park and pay to park. Cost $20 per car to park there and walk back to the creek, but well worth it to have them watch my truck and also avoid any tickets the police sometimes give parking on 114.. Caught quite a few sandies back there on Saturday......

yz I owe you for today. I finally got to go fishing with my son this evening, I’ve been sick for about 3 weeks. We drove straight to the DFW Adventure park but we got there about 6:30 and no one was there. We went on down to the motorcycle track and there were a couple of guys loading up. Well the last time I was there, I think the mangers name is Scott I could be wrong, told me the gate is left open all the time so we went fishing. We caught about 15 keepers but threw them back, mainly we were scouting. Well we got back to the truck about 9:00 and started out. Well the gate was locked. We drove up the hill to the south and I knocked on the door of the house and a very nice guy named Terry came out and after some conversation let us out through his gate. A good time fishing with my son and a funny story to boot.

the gate used to not lock because we had a gas rig out there so there was a security gaurd, but the rig as moved out so now we lock it.
some people say that it is stupid that we have people pay to park, and if it was up to me yall wouldnt pay, but i guess its the cost to run a bussiness these days.

went out this morning, the cold front slowed the fish down. caught three nice channel cats, gave the fish to a fellow fisherman on shore. didn't have cooler to keep fresh glad someone is enjoying them. also caught a few sandies while catfishing. water is dropping, seeing more sumerged sandbars so boaters be careful out there. especially after the bridge.

I've never posted before, but I've been reading these posts for six weeks and I want to thank everyone that has shared information. Yesterday, me, my wife and our two children walked in from 377. We caught 17 sand bass and a crappie. We had our best luck in a big deep hole that was about 500 yards east of where Henrietta Creek and Denton Creek join. That hole had hundreds of shad feeding on the steep bank just below where we stood. Gar were feeding heavily, and one grabbed one of my son's jigs and eventually broke his line. Like I said, we only caught 17, but a Mexican family that we fished near caught 45 sand bass. They were fishing with something I think is called a "Little Fishie"??? It looked like a swimming minnow, and the sandies obviously preferred those, maybe becuase of all the shad, perhaps. All I had were various color jigs and road runners, and some in line spinners, and we did OK, but I sure wish we would have had some of those artificial swimming minnows. That being said, we just got home from church just now and my wife is frying up those sand bass fillets and cut potatos, so I can't complain too much.

377 goes right over the creek. Look back a cwils89 last post and there is a Google Map of it. The actual creek is the water running under the bridge furthest north.

After reading a lot of the posts of the duck hunters on Texas Hunting Forum last Fall, and how mad those guys get whenever someone seems to be "internet scouting" for duck hunting spots, I'm surprised and encouraged with how so many fishermen on this site freely share their fishing tips. Now, I never posted on the duck sites, so I wasn't the one getting yelled at, but it was amusing to read...guys trying to talk about duck hunting, yet trying not to talk duck hunting specifically, all at the same time.
These fishing sites seem so much more laid back. I was so glad to see my two little "city kids" catching fish Saturday, I can't thank all the guys that post here enough!

Go north on 35 to Texas Motor Speedway, go right on 114 to 377 go left to the creek. It will be the second bridge. As I said before look at cwils89 post just above it has a url for Google maps. Beware where you park because of vandals.
I don’t mind answering these questions and I’m not being mean but if you new guys will read the entire thread you will learn the answers to most of these questions and lots of good information about where to catch fish, bait to use, times and where to fish.

Thanks John. A buddy and I went yesterday and wernt sure which creek to fish in. We decided to hit the south creek and walk east, big mistake. The creek was dry about 200 yards east of the bridge, you almost need a chain saw to walk back there. I guess next time I'll stick to the north creek. We decided to just go to the lake after that. Sandies were killing the feather jig I was using in a open boat slip. Caught 15 in less that 20 mins.

Bassmaster2010 next time you go, park at the dirt parking lot on the west side of 377 just south of the southern bridge about where the power lines cross 377 and the train tracks merge. Cross the tracks and there are multiple trails to follow with ease just head west and you'll run into the creek. look at google maps satellite views of the area to get an idea of where you want to go. many bends and oxbows here to fish.
After being out there several times, i don't believe where you went is part of the main creek, more of a cut or backwaters when the water was high, as water was running out of that area last week into the main creek just west of the bridge. see here:

It has slowed down alot since 2 weeks ago. my youngest and me went tonight because of the wind and he caught only 1 real nice sandy in 2 hours, another gentleman that was there had maybe 6 or so and left shortly after we arrived. Tomorrow morning heading to EM, hopefully will have some luck there.

I was out Tuesday morn. and was able to still get pretty far up the creek. the fish are slow but still there. fish 3 hours end up with 22 Sandies and 2 Crappies and 2 Catfish. Catfish didn't waste anytime with hotdogs..I fish in an old 15 ft. V.I.P. catching boat. using the little fishie.

i went up to the 2nd bridge on Saturday and caught one sandy in the rain on a roadrunner. Got soaked! Was my first time there and most likely not my last. Where do you find these Little fishie lures and what colors are you guys using?

Put them on your jig and cast. Find flowing water and fish above or below the current. I believe they come with the jig heads in the package too, if I can recall.

ive been having pretty good luck using a blue/silver grub with green head, last time i went out there it was about 1 out of 3 casts and fish were on almost every time... lots of fun, just be careful where you park

I have not been there this year because of reports of vandalism and damages to vehicles. I'm in a rental car until my car is repaired (unrelated) and there is no way in heck I'm gonna take that out there to be vandalized.

All the vandalism I have read about was to those who parked on the shoulder above the southwest lot. I wouldn’t park up there nor would I attempt to take a car down to the lot because of the ruts and pot holes. The north east lot is pretty rough to get in and out of.

Tried it today, jigged it with 1/16th o, rooster tailed, used worms and Shad. NADA, maybe cause we were drinking bud heavys... Didn't walk far, but the water was high and boats were going upstream by us all day.

i was over there almost everyday on the weekend with a couple of friends, we used a variety of lures (lil fishy shad color, grubs, anything with green will work if fished really slowly). we caught an avg of 7 fish with in 3 hours. didn't see anyone catching off minnow, but there were people catching 15 to 20 with the little fishy, dunno how they are doing it.

I hooked something that i wasn't able to land but it was big and i have no idea what kind of fish it was. it looked like a buffalo and did a lot of jumping, it must of been 8 to 10lbs, but it unhooked itself. any ideas on what it could of been?

Ended up going this morning and the water is up just good enough to get up almost to the hole..caught around 43 Crappies and 9 Sandies which were magnums allot of 11 , 12 inchers . and 3 nice catfish. all on jigs..

Well I just started working in this area and I love to fish before/after work sometimes so I guess I'll be checking this spot out finally. All the years I've been fishing the vine I've never tried the creek. If only I had brought some fishing clothes I'd be out there tonight after work!

From pass experience, the fish has gone back to the lake by this time of year. However, due to high level of water this year, they may still be in the creek. I just want to see whether anybody has gone to the creek lately.

I've been hearing that the crappie and sandies are gone into the main lake. Catfish, carp, gar should be in there soon. Those little fishes get outta the way and the gar get in there from what I'm told.

I am hearing allot about the dam that is going to slow the run down. anyone get an update let us know.. I have boat in shop and hope it is gone by the time my boat comes out of the shop..as soon as i get out there I'll leave a report

Yep the dam is in place and at this time I think not much fish is getting past it.
I did see some fish come out not a allot but some.
I talked to some of the workers and they think it will be done in the next week. One thing about it is that the work they are doing just may make a good fishing spot next year.

I took a walk out there yesterday, and I personally don't see why it'd be any problem for the fish to go through the pipe they have setup. Fish navigate much more difficult obstacles and make it through. Caught a dink right below the dam, didn't try above it.

Dan I will agree that pipe will allow them to go through . especially at night when the noise level is down. I'm going to try a spot up by henrietta hole sometime this week and I'll leave a post.. I wish everyone luck at the creek

I think the pipe is a large pipe on the far side you can see where the rocks split that is a big pipe leading through it and hopefully they just get done soon to open the creek back up. I know last year the creek went pretty high and they wouldn't be able to stop it with what they have right now..

White bass are current oriented. The concentration of current coming out of that pipe will draw them in like a magnet.

It's been a while since I've been on here, but I was thinking about going to Denton creek east of 377 this weekend, has anyone been lately? I saw the post about the dam, is it still there?

I found 2 small sand bass above the dam I did not go for the hike past the dam I bet one might do better past it.

To chads: I been limiting out out on the bank for years on denton creek,bank fishermen are just as good, we just dont have a boat.I am always hitting the creek this time of year,last year was a good year,I know boat fisherman that pass me and tell me it's slow and I will be hitting the big girls so dont put down bankfisherman.

An attractive young lady Game Warden checked my ONE sand bass and my license today as I was bank fishing close to the boat ramp. She and her partner had been checking everyone on the creek.
She said the best catch she had seen was FOUR fish. I caught 3 for the day so I guess I did allright. Didn't feel allright though.

Was up at the hole today on foot. and the water is to low to get a boat all the way up there. you can get close but we need some rain for a motor boat. As for the fishing, was slow mostly males and had to fish hard just to get 10. not all were legal.

Be careful as to where you park on 377. people who had just pulled off to the side of the road were getting tickets from the roanoke PD.

brad my boat is in the shop , but hopefully will be out in time for the run . especially when the crappie setup near the hole. but I go alone and always looking for a passenger. I'll let you know when i go and we'll go..

Where do they expect people to park then?! On a nice weekend day, there' just too many people there and you have to park on the side of the road. That "parking lot" only holde maybe 10 cars before you are forced to park along the road.

That's just it, they do not want anyone parking there anymore,they get complaints all the time. They have made the south parking area that has the barricade on the west side of 377 a fire lane and are handing out tickets as well as parking on the side of 377= will get you a ticket.

You have to park at the bike park parking lot now and walk if you want to avoid a potential ticket. The city does not care if we have parking out there.

I wish I still had my old Ford 4x4, I'd expand that stupid little bike parking area.

Sucks about the parking. But, good news is that on my way to work this morning, about 75% of the Dogwoods blooming, and the Redbud in the yard was just starting to emerge. The fish should be here in large numbers in no time!

I saw 2 cars with orange nasty grams on them about an hour ago...both parked on the west side of 377 just a bit south of the east side parking area. There were a number of cars parked there about 9:00 this morning. I don't know if anyone was catching fish, but there sure were a lot of people trying...

Well, went up around the rapids and fished for two hours and got 10 nice keepers. They are moving in slow this year,may have to do with all that construction going on.Having to work harder so far this year. Should bust loose soon.But that's what makes fishing on the creek so fun.

Can boats get through yet?

On Wednesday they had ropes going across the creek were the damn was,
a john boat bout 14ft with two guys tried to go under the ropes and two game wardens one male the other one female walked out and told them it would be a
hundred dollar fine if they went under those ropes.

What I don't get is there are no signs saying do not go under the ropes???? How can they fine you?? I saw a boat go under the 377 bridge as well, a man and young boy in a bass tracker they had to go under the ropes but no wardens at that time.

Next time I'ma gonna have to bring my bike and Park at the Bike parking, then ride my bike down. Went today to check it out and saw about 8 cars with red stickers on they're driver windows. Thats sux cause the fishing down is gonna get good.

Okay so my understanding is if none of your tires are touching pavement (stay on the grass) they can't write a ticket???? Anyone know the answer??? The orange sticker is a warning right??? If you go another day after getting the orange warning sticker can you get a ticket??? I think i'm just gonna park at bike park and walk from now on.

They have no solid legal grounds to issue citations for this. The ropes are unmarked with zero signage. It will be challenged and dismissed easily in court. On a happier note.... I was out Friday and caught 9 sandies, all past the ropes and the 377 bridge. All fish were Huge for Denton creek. Fishing was slow but as expected for this early in March. I could not identify any solid pattern. It will get hot real soon!!!

I was not in the boat, I was bank fishing and talked to the guys in that boat. They did not get a ticket they turned around and fished back to trophy club park. I have fished this creek for over 20 years and seen game wardens two times, I have already seen them two times this year.

I think its a ticket. About 20-30 yards closer to the bridge, there is a "no parking" sign. People had the orange tickets on they're windows that where parked way in the grass, about 10 yards away from the pavement. Sux for real!!

I guess, at least that's what I am doing. Another thread said game wardens were out there again today, they and law enforcement must be teaming up this year to make it more difficult. They have been out there a bunch this year, not the norm compared to years past.

We spent about 2 hours just west of the damn/construction project tonight. Only caught one.

I went this Monday morning, walked the bank either side of the 377 bridge, flipped small tube jigs, no bites.

For the kayaks, I would ask the Wardens if you can legally portage around the rope and construction area. There is a provision in state navigable river law that allows portaging around hazards, dams, and such.

More for those impeded by the rope or ticketed.

I emailed the Corp to see what is going on with the ropes and the parking and this the response:

(1) There are several sets of marked rope barricades on either side of the TRA construction area crossing Denton Creek. . We have been warning people for a few weeks about crossing a NOTICABLE barricade, and staying out of the actual work area while construction is going on. Now there are divers getting the bags out via overhead cranes. The diversion channel has been removed. (This has kept the prepetual flow of the creek going for the fish traveling upstream to spawn. The boaters continue to disregard the barricades and now its a safety issue. This area is scheduled to be clear by mid week if and only if the public obeys and stays out of the barricaded work area.

(2). A vehicle went thru the piped off area on the west side and was struck by a train. As a result and at the request of the Railroad, TXDOT has closed that area (it is in their road easement and as a courtousy was left open for use until now ). Along with this the CORPS has warned everyone that there is no parking along the highway,and it is now being enforced at the request of TXDOT due to disregard of the posted restrictions and the causing of traffic hazards. Trophy Club and Roanoake have been issuing warnings for two weeks, and have now started siting vehicles parked along the roadway. I hope this answers your questions.

Maybe we could get PETA involved so those poor fish that have been held up and are just about to burst with eggs could get thinned out so they all have enough room to spawn. They do have really sharp gills and could possibly hurt each other

I just moved to Denton and am looking for places to bank fish until I get another boat so I went to the creek today to find out what it's all about. I parked in the lot on the NE side of the 377 bridge and walked down to the creek. I would asume that the best fishing would be east of the bridge. Are you guys saying that the fish will move way up the creek to the west of the bridge?

Yes they will move and far west as they can. You can normally find them stacked in deep hole on the upstream side of a shallow with moving water.

How deep are the pools?

If I float a jig under a bobber I can only get down about 5'.

For the sandies you need to slow roll a white roadrunner with a orange head on it through those deep holes. If the water is real clear you can use a white head. Also you will catch some crappie with the same method or switch to a white jig with pink head.

The holes can be 7-15ft deep. If the water is up they can get over 20ft.

It is just north of Roanoke on 377.

Is the water at normal pool right now?

Pretty low. I think right now most of the creek would be 3-6ft deep past 377 with ankle deep shallows. You might find 8-12ft deep holes West of 377 right now. The creek being closed off is probably saving a lot of lower units this year. This is about the most dangerous level you can have on the creek. There is a solid concrete wall underwater not far past 377 that can ruin your day. It is at least 18-24" wide and looks like at one time they walled off the creek. It should be about a foot under the surface right now. Next really dry season I will try and get some pics of it and GPS location so people know to look for it.

Are there any signs? I've driven up and down 377 numerous times and don't recall seeing any creeks. Maybe I just haven't been paying much attention.

1 mile north of Roanoke is the creek. The railroad bridge over the creek is easily seen from 377. That is when you know your crossing the creek. 1/2 mile south of 1171.

Are you talking about running that roadrunner right off the bottom?

Try all kinds of retrieves and speeds. When the water heats up a lot and is pretty clear you can burn it. This early you need to slow if down. The fish will tell you how they like it if you just try a lot of different speeds. Try and keep it off the bottom or you will be donating a lot of roadrunners.

I was just out there, and they are biting the roadrunners. Caught 5 in about an hour.

Good job sioux. Where did you go on the creek? You can park at the bike trail entrance and cross the tracks (west) if you feel like hiking. That is what I usually do.

Yes, just have to find a trail through the woods. Once you cross the tracks, you will see an old road. Follow it south and it will lead to the creek. Then you can follow the creek west.

Ive not made it out there yet but I have been reading about this dam. Is it permanent or temporary and where is it from 377? Sounds like most of y'all have been doing well considering how early it is.

They say that the temp. dam and associated sandbags are being removed this week and should be all clear for the weekend. Watch that lower unit destroyer just west of 377. CONCRETE.

Went up the creek Monday walk all the ways to the hole. It’s really down for this time of year. Did not get a few bites at the hole really small sandy. Came back down the creek working all sandbars and deep hole I could fine, must sandy’s was on the deep holes. Had to move bait really slow at times but when they hit they were engulfing it. Fished for around 6 hours and only got 50 nice sandy. Should pickup by this weekend, boats will not be going too far up innless we get some rain

I went yesterday and caught a few "sandys", no crappie. Walked west from the bridge to that first small creek arm.

I saw two guys on a boat hit something solid underwater just past the bridge.

I think I am going to give it a rest for a few days and fish some ponds.

Once you cross the tracks, you will see an old road. Follow it south and it will lead to the creek.

I guess you forgot to mention that you either need to be a billygoat or have repelling gear to cross the RR tracks.

He went west from 377 George. Don't think he would know about the no passing zone. Speaking of that, I saw what they were laying on the river bed there. Big white boulders like rip rap material. Really good spot for the crappie and sandies to drop their eggs.

Someone REALLY needs to put a flag or something on that underwater concrete retaining wall just west of 377. Someone is going to get hurt there.

Yeh, you got to know the place very well otherwise, you are going to ruin your lower unit. Go slow. And there are some logs in the middle of the creek as well. If you don't know where they are, go slow and be alert!

I use to have a bass tracker with a short shaft 50 Merc on it. I cut down the transom so it would fit. That boat would go anywhere running the big motor.

Went up the creek today, Was way west of 377 bridges, fished for one hour and I nailed 15 nice sandy’s. They were in 5 feet of water up tight in some brush in center of creek. Had to move really slowly. Including this really nice one

The bears migrate up from Bear Creek in Keller in the spring up to Denton Creek, same time the Sandies migrate up from the Lake. Don't stay out on the trails to late at night because the bears are moving towards the Walmart trash bins in Roanoke. Lots of snake this time of year too, on the ground and in the trees.

I was just under the bridge. Didn't really do much exploring. It didn't look like there was any where to really fish right on the water unless you have a rope and a harness haha.

You have to head west. Now that the temp dam is gone the fish are headed up as far as they can go. We really need a few good rains for them to reach Henrietta Hole.

Sorry, I moved to Colorado when I was in 8th grade and got used to climbing rough stuff up there to fish and hunt.

You will need to do alot of walking the bank to find the areas that get you to the waters edge.

I have only went as far as the first creek on the north side going west from the bridge. I assume that you follow that creek up until you can cross it then walk back to the main channel.

under the bridge for couple of hours, no bite. several others in the same area, did not see anybodt catch anything.

I was out there near Henrietta Hole yesterday and a boat came by using a mud motor. I did see another flat bottomed boat with a small normal outboard make it nearly to the hole I was fishing in. The hole I was fishing in has ankle deep water on the east end of it, so the mud motor boat had no problem getting through, but the flat bottom boat with the normal motor didn't try it. I typed all this to ask everyone a question. Are the ropes still up at the temporary dam or not? I was out there five hours and would have expected to have seen more than two boats. Does anyone know if the ropes are still up?

what ever you think the water is still low the fist rapids are not close to the hole, that all I have to say on that and not very wide and lots of stump so what ever you think

Okay I have a simple question. How far of a walk is it from bike trail parking to Henrietta hole? I have heard 1-2 and 3-4 miles. Pretty big swing.

I have walked from the bike trail parking to the bridge and then west to the 1st creek on the north side, it takes about ten minutes.

I have no idea where this Henrietta hole is.

Three boats would be two too many at Henrietta Hole. Went there with my buddy and his new girlfriend last year. I was just about ready to swim back just to escape watching as she gently stole his manhood away {passive aggressive whiner}. He eventually sold his boat and now never goes anywhere without her. Really sad.

For those visiting Denton Creek on Sunday morning...hope they all said howdy to the nice Game Warden walking the creek...I saw his truck as I pulled into the Bike Lot. I talked with a guy coming out, who said he caught 3 fish in 4 hours under the bridge, so I drove on. Guess I shoulda walked on up the creek a ways...but I'm not walking 3-4 miles up the creek. No way, Jose. Hope for rain is about all I can add.

Henrietta hole you will need to walk down road and go in were they stop us from parking and go up the creek around 2.5 to 3 miles.You may look at a map on google,I walk in from my home. but they are not there,but to get the nise sandys you need to go west. Its a long walk

I hope the above link works. I simply typed Ronoake, Texas into google and hit maps. Henrietta Hole is where Henrietta Creek flows into Denton Creek. It is where the two creeks meet, and it looks like a T on this map. The were many sand bass just east of Henrietta Hole this past weekend. Henrietta Hole is about two miles from 377, but their are well worn trails through the woods.

I see nothing that says Henrietta Creek on the goggle map.

I do see Henrietta Creek road to the South.

It's not roped off any more. They took the rope down and I went up there with my boat last Friday . Be very careful guys going up that creek. The cement dam is maybe a foot under water and the huge log that runs almost across it right before you get to the dam is also maybe a foot under water. If y'all go in a boat, take it ultra slow after the 377 bridge. Hauling a$$ will put you in a bind really fast. Be careful is all I'm saying. Deep pockets where holding some fish, but with this no rain, I don't know if many fish will even go up to the hole. We need a good down pour. Good luck out there.

I know the hole inside and out. The hole is where Denton Creek makes a hard right and Henrietta Creek pours in from the left. Fred Hagin you are correct, a boat can make it to the hole. We were out on Sunday and went way past the first set of rapids in our old vhull with outboard; we got out 4 or 5 times to pull over sandbars. Additionally we saw a flat bottom coming back and received a report that they had indeed made it to the hole. While the water is only a few inches deep at the shallows we can and do drag our boat over the shallows. We were just around the last bend from the hole but it was getting dark so we headed back. That being said I do not recommend going that far up stream. There are tons of stumps, logs, sandbars and that old concrete dam to worry about. On the way back the dam took off the tip of a blade on my prop. There is a long dead tree that is inline with the dam (the dam is in the second bend upstream of 377, stay to the left). We had three preschoolers with us and they “caught” all the fish, 10 sandies and 1 crappie. The females are monsters this time of year….WE NEED RAIN!

I went out this evening to the creek, started my hunt at what most of us call the rapids. Worked down the creek from the rapids as always, tried my go-to bait and had no takers, so I tried a few other baits I use early in the season {January and Febuary}; they had lock jaw. Then went up the creek to the next sand bar, worked a small draw that had a stump in it. Was working my go-to bait and it was on. Had to work it really slow and popping it at times, got 25 sandys out of this hole. I dont have anymore to say about boats getting by the rapids, all fisherman know a V or modified V-boat takes more than 2 inches of water.

I am planning to go to the rapid area tomorrow around 4:30 after work. Who is with me or who will be there? PM me so we can go together. I will be scared all by myself in the woods.

Because they roped off the old parking lot by the railroad, I went last Saturday morning south on 377 down to where the woods end on the east side of the road, so I was technically within eyesight of the old railroad parking lot, only about 500 yards south of it and on the opposite side of the road. Where the woods end, there is a big cleared construction area that is private property. I exited 377 there and drove onto the grass, next to the woods and parked off the side of the road next to those woods. It is a very steep grade. I was the first to try it there and when I came back about six hours later about five other vehicles had joined me in parking there. They were all courteous and left me room to back out, thank goodness, because I don't think the old Suburban could have climbed that steep grade up to the highway, especially since I would have had to hit that highway after summitting that grade while blind to oncoming traffic.
Parking there worked for me but it is taking a chance on not being able to leave when you are ready to go, because you are completely at the mercy of other vehicles not blocking you in. That being said, I had previously driven twice to that bicycle parking lot that morning, and I just couldn't bring myself to park at that bicycle parking lot and add another mile to our long hike. Desperate times call for desperate measures! :-)

Olsen's Pro-Am Fishing Shop right near Roberts Cut Off Rd & Jacksboro Hwy. That is the closest place I am aware of to get minnows. Maybe someone knows of a closer place.

Guys, since we can't park at the old parking spot any more, I am asking your ideas of where we can park. I draw a map of what I heard recently but I am still not sure whether I can park at the Roanoke park location or on Al Slaughter new construction area. I also marked the locations for the big hole and some called the rapid, hopefully some of you will not get mad at me. GeirgeZ last thursday, have been catching them there for 2 weeks. Look back in this thread and you will see info on the temp damn location, easy to spot,east of the bridge.

I went to the hole and worked back two to three bends yesterday evening ~530pm til dark and did not get a sniff! Using white w/ red head road runner and chart roadrunner. ARGHH. I must not be holding my mouth right.

Does anyone think its possible to launch a kayak on 35 by the speedway and make to the marshal creek boat ramp? A buddy and me are going to try on Saturday. This will also be my first time on the creek so is there anything I should look out for besides the stumps?

txyz, I am not familiar with the creek that far west. I would think that it would be possible in a kayak. However, I believe that there will be some places that require you to drag through.

I was in this river for the first time on Saturday 3-12-11 and it was pretty cool. I was fishing for LMB, but caught acouple of sandies because green was being stingy

O.k. gentleman on East Byron nelson blvd. and Oak st there is a Velaro gas station they sell minnows , and I have always used the little fishie with the blue top . $1.19 at Walmart and than put it on a colored jig head . heavier will get you to the bottom. and look for the deep pockets with sand bars. don't be afraid to move around like the fish do. and if this doesn't help than I don't know what will. and if you take a boat up just go slow . it is to shallow to get to the hole in a boat other than a flat bottom , not unless you have a flat bottom with a 90 hp. jet propelled motor or swamp motor .and most boats that go fast sit shallower in the water so don't get to mad, cause they stir the fish up for you.. have fun and clean up after yourselves.

Well Chad you are right on the money, I use a white with a black back lit’l fishie on a jig head. And you have to move around a lot. Was fishing with one of our friends this morning. I was having a hard time to get them to bite and he was tarring them up. And yes they came round as always, but it has a tough day .We all have days like that 20 Sandys, but the big females always make a tough day better. In a way that’s not bad for 6 hours of fishing

Next time try a four inch Zoom Fluke, shad or shad flake color and use a small jig head.

If the sandbass are there you do not need minnows. A white curlytail grub on a 1/4 oz. jighead will do the job.

Oh thats the point the sandbass are not there for me.
I have been using a white beetle spin rig what has been working for me in the past.
Seems that them sandbass like just about anything that is white......

I went out today, starting at sun up, at the last sand bar before you go into the hole. Was doing really good, a lot of nice sandy’s. Then moved into the hole, it was not worth the walk, very few sandy’s. Started working my way down, creek fishing as I went, found the sandy’s all over but had to move the bait really slow at times. Was down there most of the day. The evening fishing was not there. In all I nailed 38 sandy’s. Don’t think I am going to have a 100 fish day this year, I have 4 days left on vacation. Not sure where I will start tomorrow

I think I am done with this creek. I have only so many hours to fish and I need to be catching something.

I spend years on big lakes to small ponds but I always did it from a boat. Bank fishing is fine and I currently have one spot where I am huntin' for the biggest bass in the pond right now. I need a good spot to catch some crappie, I like the catchin' part.

I am going to keep reading this web site and see if I can find more places (close to Denton) to fish.

went again thursday afternoon. still not a sniff. worked from the bridge past the second creek bed feeding into denton creek.
Used roadrunners, lil fishies, flukes many different colors. ran into a couple of guys that had been at it since sunrise and had caught only 17 with miles of walking.

I might give it another week and see if it heats up......

Went friday I launched at katie Woods and went all the way up to the small rapids past the water dept. I have now a 16 ft Skeeter with 150 hp. on back . interesting ride .. I caught 10 nice ones to take home . just fishing pockets. caught about 30 small ones.

Started my day on the creek as the sun was coming up; I was at the last deep hole before Henrietta hole. The sandy’s were on a feeding mood but I still had to work at it. Then I moved up to Henrietta hole, and yes, some have made it there. The bite was slow and you had to work at it, but I did pull a few out of there. Then they shut down, I could not get a bite on nothing and I worked all the baits I had, worked my way fishing as I went to the rapids. Only a few bites, it seems that it was happening a lot this year. I talked to several people on the creek and they said the same thing. We need some rain, it would help out. In all I fished till 9:45 am and got 25. Will try it again in the morning.

i remember this time last year i went and caught a bunch in the mornings under the 35 bridge , then attempted to get to "henrietta hole" by walking in the woods....big mistake and kind of scary too

Put in at 35 in my kayak with a buddy Friday and didn't Catch anything until about half way to Henrietta hole. There were maybe half a dozen times we had to carry our yaks until a couple miles downstream of 35(Cleveland Gibbs rd area). Once past the shallow spots and to the first "hole" about 6 ft my first cast found crappie and sand bass. There are some holes holding fish west of Henrietta hole. Some rain would be nice. We did pretty good Friday, lots of good size sandies where "Henrietta" creek meets Denton. Pretty slow close to 377...

I think I seen you Ko out there. I had my boat beach at the little rapids where was probably the last spot yall may had to walk . cause i seen a couple yaks come through. it is an awesome creek to come down through. wish i had a kayak now.

took the boat all the way to the rapids, found some there worked our way back down, still slow and hard to pattern them so far, managed 18. found the submerged dam and took a chuck out of the prop. time to switch to the yak until we get some rain.

I really tried it all but did the best with a spinner bait. They were hitting good on it so I just left it on.. Interstate 35 is a nice place to put in. On the east side of the road is better you can back your truck down literally to the creek. Although we had to walk a few spots it was never more than 50 feet. Also I didn't have to carry at all. There is two trees down between 35 and Henrietta creek but you can work around them in a kayak.

And what would you do with a boat?
My point is if you fish the same place on a creek I don't think that a boat will help...
But if you plan on going in at the same place and then move up or down ok that works but on a creek one could also walk the creek and have the same fishing.
Dont get me wrong I see why one would like to have a boat. Faster cover of the water but on a creek well I just don't see it.
The funny thing I have found this year "this is my first year in Texas creeks" Is that I can go to the same place as last week and catch like a pro then use the same stuff the next week and catch not one fish.

the only differance would be if you catch a limit of sandies it sure is nice to leave them in a live well , than to carry to the car. but the boat will cost you more , untill you get a ticket for parking around a bridge ..

I appreciate all of you posting on this thread this year. Ive been so busy I haven't bought a fishing license yet. Usually Ive made several trips to DC and at least a few to Rowelett. Launch at Trophy Club, no parking tickets...in about the time it takes you to walk from the Bike Lot to the junction up past 377, I think I can be there and not break a sweat or break an ankle on the uneven ground...

Saw several cars at 377 so I went and tried a different creek that runs into GV. Went in behind some developement in Trophy club and walked Marshall Creek for about 2 miles. Started up just east of Byron Nelson HS on the east side of Trophy Club Drive. Where I started the creek was barely a trickle with the drought conditions. The further I made it towards the lake the deeper the holes. Caught a few small sandies and small bass.

If we get some rain, this creek looked like it might have potential.

It wasn't a cougar that killed the Alligator...

Well one more day and I can see what the sandys are doing. It sound like things are slow this week. I know Sunday and Monday I has averging 30 fish a day,so lets see were they are now. I will be starting at the hole on Sunday as the sun is coming up. It time to realy fish hard on the creek

Fred - Where are you getting those temps from? I have a hard time believing the water temps have reached 70 so far, and if they did, they must be back down after yesterday and today.

Went out Sunday for 3 hours and got a limit, was a cool day to fish,had to work at it to get a bite.And sometime they hit realy light or just hit at the bait. Water temp should drop a little this week. Will try my luck again sunday.

I have a portable Hummingbird fish finder that measures temp. I turned it on in my bedroom Saturday, and it matched the 74 that my thermostat showed for my house. I carried it to the truck, and drove a few miles. When I got out of the truck, I turned it on and it said 79 degrees, which matched the reading that the temperature that my Chevy truck was giving me for an outside temperature. I walkeed down to the edge of a small lake near luna and beltline and stuck the depthfinder in the water. It still said 79 when I stuck it in the water, but within five minutes it said 71. Ten minutes later, with it still in the water, it still said 71.

The temp was taken at the depth the puck was sitting. However it is Denton Creek and last year when the water was high the deepest hole I found on my Hummingbird was about 15'.

Went to 377 and denton creek 4/1 caught 2 nice sandies using white roadrunners- now my rant- what a trashed out place to bank fish!!! picked up 2 bags of fisherman's disguards-wrappers,tangled line, old hooks, cans, etc. even saw people burning trash (burn ban in effect)- come on people! what ever happened to pack it in, pack it out- no way would i bring my kids out there to fish-disgusting!

You should see all the Miller Lite beer cans up beyond 377...what a mess. I saw at least a whole case of empties on the south bank...in two different spots. Where is "Don't mess with Texas" when you need it???

creek temps read 72deg on my hummingbird depth finder, and found some nice sandies east of 377 on sat. this rain will help alot.

I cant say that I would take kids to this place as well. I love to fish and when I see so much trash I have to wonder am I at the dump?

I am not one for picking up trash that others have left but for the life of me this place gets allot of trash after a weekend of fishing.
Why should I pick up others trash? I cant say anything bad about someone picking up the trash but I have to think that is not the cure.

Dont get me wrong I have done it but man it just sucks when you want to go fishing and then find all of them slobs trash.
On a side note I sure like to pick up them floats and hooks and sinkers I have not had to buy a float this year!
The best one yet for me was a bunch of guys went to McDees and got all kinds of food with wrappers and they was eating at Denton creek as they fished the trash was all over the place as in the creek and on the bank and when I asked are you going to pick this stuff up?

I hope you tear the sandbass up Friday. The second week in March, I saw three guys take seventy five from the first big hole east of Henrietta Hole. They were using somthing called a Zoom Fluke, shad color, about four inches long. Around that hole that morning, the sandbass were rejecting road runners and other jigs, they were even rejecting the little two inch swimming shad baits that look so realistic, but they were nailing that Zoom Fluke, not the big bass Zoom Flukes, but the smaller ones.
Of course, I don't know if what I saw was just limited to that morning only. Some days might be road runner days, some days little fishies, some days something else. But I know from what I saw that morning, I got more confidence right now in a fluke than anything else.

so has anyone been out there fishing? I fish by the fallen logs off 377. Last time I was there I was able to catch three decent sized sandies, but the water level has really dropped compared to what it was last year.

Went again yesterday after work, not even close to the day before. Caught about 10 within half hour and then the bites suddenly stopped.

Still not bad 10 within a half hour Id take that.
The place has been hit so hard the last few times I have gone that well I look for less fisherman on the bank.

How far up from Trophy Club? I'm gonna toss a coin between Denton Creek and Hickory Creek tomorrow. Winds look bad and from the South/SouthWest.

Id hit Denton just because Hickory has not been any good for me.

ok so I went there last weekend for the 1st time... really did not know where exactly to go. coming in from grapvine I came up 114 to 377 and made a right.. then went about a mile or two up the way and saw the rail road bridge. I parked about a half mile from there on the right. Then I walked the trail down to the water. But from there I was completly lost on where to start.. Needless to say I did not catch much of anything. I saw alot of gar and carp but not much else. If anyone wants to be nice and help me out on where some good spots are please PM me.

Not since the rains. Been on my mind everyday though. Good to see someone else with the fever. Figure another month till it gets started but I'm sure I'll end up out there sooner than that.

I passed by the bridge yesterday, the water is already above the normal level. Looking forward to another productive season. If the weather keeps like this for the next week or so, it will be time to fish again.

I stopped in at the Knob Hill trail entrance and walked down to the creek last night. Hiked up the North bank to where the creek forks to the right and the main creek goes on up to the left. Has anyone ever fished this spot, or under the bridge, with any success? Water is still real muddy. But the conditions are getting better.

I have fished under the bridge last year and also down stream from there and have got some small sandies and some crappie. Not sure what its going to be like this year but I think its worth trying and the next few months.

Before the rain, i walked all the way down to the hole. I caught 5 total mostly males and only 2 were keepers. One was 13 inches. If they are not there now it wont be long. As soon as the water clears up, i will be back

I didn't read the thread so you might be right. I went down to a creek last year and walked to this one spot they called the hole.

Let me look on the map and I will see where it was.

It was on 377 just south of Cross Timber Road.

I am sick of this HOLE spot ANY thing can be a Hole seen it done it. lets give something about the hole that you are trying to report about. Like I went to the creek from point to point and the too the west after walking about 2 hours and then turn left to a hole that seems deep for the creek.

I've been down a couple times scouting. Haven't made it back to the hole yet. But based on the amount of water in the lake, and the depth at 377, there looks to be plenty of water already. They're letting a lot out of the lake now and the Murrel Park boat ramp has been closed.
