Fly of the week or What did you tie this week?

Fly of the week or What did you tie this week? - 01/17/15 11:31 PM

Somewhere I read about someone that tied a fly every week during 2014. Sounded like a cool idea...

However, I already know that will never happen for me. I travel too much to do it for a full year, but I might be able to do it every week in January. (Hey, let's keep the goals realistic. roflmao)

We're three weeks into January and here are my three flies.

So, what did you tie this week? How about posting a picture of one of the flies that you tied this week?

Here're mine:

Week 1: A size 1/0 Clouser: First fly of 2015

Week 2: A size 18 Zebra Midge, using a "rainbow" glass bead.

Week 3: A size 20 Mercury Midge

So, what have you tied????

They are beautiful. You will catch lots fishes with those for sure. I didn't tie anything for a while. Too many things to do at home.

Re: Fly of the week or What did you tie this week? - 01/19/15 06:50 AM

Good lookin' flies.

I have a few I did last week. I had to go out of town, so I finished painting up another batch of poppers and took all my junk with me to set up in the hotel room.

Halfway done.

Finals finished with epoxy.

I set up everything, and ready to tie.

Then I decided to use the opportunity, and the extra space the hotel room had, to work on a video project i've been thinking about for a while. I worked on that until I headed to bed. The next few nights were tough because I couldn't get back to the room until late. I couldn't finish and had to pack it all back up and am going to try and tie this next week...hopefully. Well, that's the plan at least. It was a lot of fun playing around with the camera, just a little time consuming.

Sooooo, technically, I did not "tie" them yet, but I figure it's all part of the process so i'll post a few.

Have a great week,
Scott

^^^

I like that idea. I tied a bunch of Gurglers last year and never thought to add eyes on the back to make a shrimp. Thanks!

I have been tying some RS2 and BWO for my trip next month to LMF. I started out tying flies for trout and realized I was way over my head tying those tiny flies. Spent a year learning all types of flies and now I'm back to trying the allusive dry fly tying. Come to read it's one of the most difficult flies to tie. I do like the simplicity of the RS2. I will try this afternoon to get some pics....cell phone can't focus that small. smile

Hope you are healing fast.

I very new to tying but I was introduced to Gurglers last fall and love how they toss up the water. I have been doubling over my 2mm foam to get what I think is the desired thickness. Would you please tell me what thickness foam you used and where you got it?
Tks in advance.

Re: Fly of the week or What did you tie this week? - 01/28/15 08:00 PM

I will use 2mm when I'm tying small gurglers for brim but most of the ones I tie including the shrimp gurgler pictured are tied with 3mm foam. I believe most of the foam sheets I've purchased were from Hobby Lobby. Some of the variety packs I've seen are 2mm but if you get it off the rack that has individual sheets you can find 3mm.

Thanks for posting those flies. Nicely done!

I'm still messing with glass bead midge patterns. I got some new midge size Killer Caddis glass beads and you know how it is... I've just got to play with the new toys. laugh

These are tied on 22 hooks. I know this is not very small for some of you, but they're the smallest hooks I have on hand. (They are also a royal bear to photograph with my cheap lens...)

Here's my week 4 fly:

Mercury Midge
Mustad C49S size 22
Copper Killer Caddis glass bead size midge
Copper Ultra Wire size X-SM
White Danville 70 denier thread

Thanks for your kind worlds.

The first one is 1/80, #8 jig hook, Flashabou as tail, peacock herl as body materials.

The second one is 1/64, #6 jig hook, Flashabou as tail, pink chenille under body, and Cactus Chenille, pearl color as top layer.

The third one is 1/32, #6 jig hook, white feather as tail with gold lateral scale, and Winter Run blue chenille as body materials.

I am catching lots crappies with these jigs.

Accidentally discovered Fish-Skull Baitfish weighted heads and may never tie a Clouser again. Sooo easy to use. My biggest challenge was keeping the glue off the 3D eyes during the application process. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Re: Fly of the week or What did you tie this week? - 03/02/15 02:44 AM

I was shown this fly and given an example of it many, many years ago. Spent some time yesterday figuring out how to tie it. The color of the beads I had isn't quite right, but otherwise, I think I figured it out. The beads should have been all be gold.

I think this pattern might have potential.

The original tier called it a "Goldie". This one is size 16.

Hey Pea,
Quick question buddy. The rubber bands, do they hold up or did you tie underneath. Just curious, cause as soon as I get home today, I plan on tying something very similar out of orange ear plugs

Thanks! After a year of tying I am going to get my trout flies in order. I started tying to save my trips to fly shop at LMF....but after tying a few, I realized it takes time and skills to learn trout flies. Spent a year tying bigger bugs (all shapes and styles) and now getting back into trout flies and enjoying it a lot!! Amazing how I have adapted and grown in one year of tying. Been doing BWO, Emergers, Nymphs, Midges, Wet Flies.

You've done very well in a year. Try to spend some time tomorrow with the demonstration tyers. You might pick up some new techniques and ideas from them.

Then think about joining them at your own table at next year's Fly Fish Texas.

here's one from tonight. I didn't get a whole lot of tying in, but I was at the tying bench for almost 3 hours. I was busy doing stuff like cutting round foam disks and gluing up a popper. I decided to ty this little fly before ending work for tonight.

Posted By: HMK

Re: Fly of the week or What did you tie this week? - 03/19/15 01:35 AM

This is my first popper. I started with a hard foam popper and painted it. The first time I painted it, I'm not sure why, but the waterproof markers would not dry, even after about 20 hours. I came home from work and thought a few minutes. I wiped it down and used fingernail polish. The polish doeanut look as good as the markers, so I will try again and see what may have happened.

One of the Flies of the week - Dr. Ishigaki's Sakasa Kebari (reverse hackle) style Tenkara fly variation. I added the copper ribs.

I was motivated to tie these after attending the Tenkara class at the Fly Fish Texas event in Athens. I of course had to go field test them yesterday. Caught about 10 in 30 minutes in a heavy cross wind. BTW don't tell my wife I got a new rod....it's much easier to hide this rod without her noticing! smile

I have always liked the look of he spoon fly. I tried to tie one last year and the video I tried (seemed the easiest) left me with fingers glued together. smile

This week (preparing for a coastal trip) I got the urge to tackle this fly again. First one is on the left. I was so happy with it, I tied one a day this week. A Spoon Fly a Day Keeps the Doctor Away.

They are addictive to tie.

Re: Fly of the week or What did you tie this week? - 04/21/15 03:00 PM

Went pond fishing Sunday and couldn't really get on a good pattern. Paddling back in we saw a fish eat a Dragonfly 2' from the boat. I tied an old Dragonfly I had as a kid (never even used it). It was sort of silly looking, but wouldn't you know, I hang it in a bush, pick it out and next cast a fish eats it as soon as it touches down. SNAP! There went my 20 year old fly!!!

So after finding none online like the one I lost(even attempting to buy one like I lost), I tied this up to see if it would fool them next trip.

I like them so far....sure makes finishing off a head SO SO easy....almost too easy!!

I use Gel glue that doesn't run. I use a bodkin to apply the eye...tip to the back sticky part, then place on spot. Wipe off bodkin. Then press bodkin on top of eye to seat it.

EP fibers 3D.

I catch a lot of bass on that same fly. I use Fly Tyers Dungeon for my fiber....lot cheaper than EP.

I usually put my lead eyes up front, I like what you did there. I also use stink on eyes, but typically I am fishing much deeper and need weight.

That EP stuff is addictive. Last summer I wore myself out on it. I need to get it out and tie up some crabs for my trip. That's this weekend's project.

I worked on this one the biggest part of the day. I worked on other projects while each coat of paint dried. It's still not complete. I have to put a coat of epoxy on to make her shiny.

The idea for the paint scheme came from a how to on the web written by Ronald Braud.

I'll try this again then. The flies are some that seem to kill the fish in the pond out here. Not the greatest pic but it's a modified woolyworm in black with a tail and wings. Lost my last 1 tonight so I had to make a couple new ones.

The 2 jigs are made out of foam and float, but I haven't decided what to do with them yet. I'm thinking of adding some weight so they'll float just below the surface and look more like minnows. Just haven't decided what to make out of them yet.

I recently got a lesson in tying soft hackle flies from Jeff Hines. I didn't do it justice, but I finally got a chance to find out how much I remembered. smile

His techniques definitely worked better than what I had done previously with this style of fly.

Here's what my Partridge and Orange looks like when you can't find your orange thread. laugh

Re: Fly of the week or What did you tie this week? - 09/01/15 03:20 PM

Looks good, Rex. Only 2 comments, but they relate to the "traditional" tying of these flies.
Try using a shorter shanked hook, and tie the body only back to the hook point, rather than to the barb.
I would have tried (probably unsuccessfully, lol) to put 1 less wrap of the hackle. I have the same issue when I tie them. "I have hackle left. It must go on the hook." smile
There is nothing wrong with your fly, and I would fish it with confidence. Bluegill love them, too.
If you want to learn about soft-hackle flies, check out The Flymph Forum. These guys know their stuff, and are very willing to share their knowledge. They also tie some beautiful flies.

Re: Fly of the week or What did you tie this week? - 09/02/15 02:59 PM

Thanks Kirk, I appreciate the comments and I agree with them. I was focused more on trying to duplicate Hines's techniques and wasn't paying much attention to the fly's proportions and it shows.

This hook was selected because the box was laying on the desk. smile But it does have too long of a shank for this thread body style of fly. I wonder if it would work for the more complex floss body, wire rib, and dubbed thorax style of soft hackle?

I agree, there is too much hackle, and that becomes very obvious when the fly is enlarged in a photograph. Photographing your flies is a very humbling process, EVERY mistake becomes obvious. smile I need to play with this some more to learn how little hackle is actually needed for these flies. However, they are fun to tie. laugh

I do appreciate the comments. We're discussing details that the fish probably aren't really going to care about, but I'm reaching the point where I'm starting to worry about them. And it is not that easy to find people willing to discuss this level of detail. I keep toying with the idea of pursuing the IFFF bronze award program, just to get the opportunity to sit down and discuss these types of details in the hope of becoming a better fly tyer. smile

Re: Fly of the week or What did you tie this week? - 09/02/15 03:31 PM

These little flies have become my favorite "style" to tie. They aren't complicated, but the simplicity of them means every little detail matters.
As for the hook length, the proportions don't really change much with the thorax soft hackles. They are still tied on pretty much the same hooks as the thread bodied flies. My go-to hook for soft hackles is Mustad's S80-3906 (or S82-3906B, altho the 3906B is also a 2x long hook).
I think this one is on the 3906B, and has the same issues as yours, plus the head is too big.

This one is more of the Flymph (fly/nymph) style, and the proportions are also much better on the shorter hook.

One more and I'll quit, I promise! This is a waxed primrose silk and, I think, dun hen spider.

Oh, one other comment, lol. Just because you have a long shanked hook doesn't mean you have to tie using the whole hook shank. Imagine you're tying a size 14 fly on a size 10 hook. All of the proportions are correct for the smaller hook, but it's tied at the eye of the bigger hook. It will still catch fish that way, too.

Adding a Red Wasp to my creek box.

Hook - JStockard 720 Curved Nymph Hook #10

Abdomen/Head - Davy Wotton SLF Squirrel Dubbing 50/50 Burnt Orange and Rusty Brown
Wing/Legs - Rabbit dyed Black in split thread

OK, I tried another soft hackle this weekend.

Here's a size 10 Partridge and Orange.

I also tied my first Grey Goose Emerger. Easier to tie than I was expecting, but getting the wing case straight is a challenge. This one is a size 12.

Im new to fly fishing and tying this is my first attempt at a popper i used. Light pink nail polish for stomach green for back neon orange for mouth yellow tail black skirt im In need of feed back goin to whitney sunday. This is my attempt at a finished small blue gill style popper

Re: Fly of the week or What did you tie this week? - 10/09/15 01:27 PM

Nice job on the popper.

It looks like you tied this one hook point up. Just a quick word of caution, when using a hook up style for a popper, the design of the rear portion of the body is important. If the body is too thick, it can block the gape of the hook making it harder to hook a fish. That's why many of us just tie them hook down to avoid this issue.

Re: Fly of the week or What did you tie this week? - 10/09/15 02:14 PM

Try 'em both ways and see which works better for you. Just for curiosity, have you dropped it in a bowl of water to see which way it floats? I haven't ever seen a popper tied that way. I just always tied what I saw in the stores, which was hook down.
I bought some 1/4" cork stoppers a while back and tied up a few size 10 poppers. Haven't had a chance to try them yet.

Cool thanks i have paid attention and i used a smaller cork stopper so i wouldnt cover the hook. I may try hook down next time. But she does float properly pushed down a couple times and dropped in.

Im goin to tail waters today..

Ok, Ok. I'll admit it doesn't look that great. Everything was put together from scraps. The spinner is a pie pan cut to shape. Wire is colored copper wire, various glass beads, worm weight painted with fingernail polish and a red drinking straw. Treble hook with Mylar flash. I've been wanting to try to make an inline spinner for awhile, but never got around to buying the right parts. I just couldn't wait any longer and decided to Southern Engineer one.

Looks like a white bass catching machine. It wouldn't be a recognized fly though. No treble hooks allowed on recognized fly patterns.

The flies on the left are Big Dale's Psychedelic Spiders - Which is basically the fly shown above...

This picture is of some of Big Dale's (a.k.a. Brimbum) flies that he gave to George Glazer. An were originally shown on this forum on 10-17-09:

We lost a lot when both of these guys passed...

You're right Kyle, this is a variation of Dale's Psychedelic Spider pattern. I had to make a few changes due to the longer shank on the safety pin and the tail was added to hide more of the pin, but it is the same pattern. These were even tied with foam that Dale gave me.

He used to tie those spiders by the hundreds (probably thousands) and would give them to area casting instructors to give away to our casting students. I still give them away in my classes, but I've had to learn how to tie them myself.

We definitely lost a couple of good friends with Dale and George. I learned a lot from both of them.

3/4" long, Brown.

The latter are variations on a GRHEN.

HMK,
It is just 3 colors of SLF Dubbing. Orange and orangey brown, with dark brown under the wing case.
Tail is PT fibers dyed olive and Wingcase is PT fibers dyed black. The white head is tying thread.

I haven't been able to tie anything for a while. So, to get back at it, here are some mercury midges (or at least a variant of the pattern smile ):

A couple of size 22 Mercury style Zebra midges to go with last week's set. The pink one is one of the 20's for reference.

Kirk, I think posting pictures of my flies has helped me become a better tyer than anything else I've done. Seeing an enlarged photo of one of my flies is a very humbling experience.

Every mistake is obvious...

Re: Fly of the week or What did you tie this week? - 12/28/15 03:14 AM

Well decided to tie something other than the trout flies that have seemed to fill up my boxes.
First up is what I think is called a Moria Fly. 1/80oz Jighead, crystal flash and some thread. Worked great for the white bass the last time I fished for them. Several years ago.

Next is a version that I want to try out of the same fly. same 1/80oz jighead, crystal flash, and small pearl chenille.

And of coarse the Briminator. Not a very good one, Gene sent me a few when I purchased one of his rods a few years back. His out fished mine probably 10 to 1. These are tied with one pheasant cathedral feather. Like I said dosnt compare to Gene's.

decided to head out this morning. Started out chasing trout on Nolan Creek. Chocolate milk color and running pretty good. Either all washed down stream or fished out. Moved to the spill way below Stillhouse. Couple hits and one lonely gill on the white one.
