I'm on my iPhone so queries are kinda tough. But Budd posted one that was just bead chain eyes, chartreuse thread body holding on a Krystal Flash. Super simple and Budd swears by it.

Someone else will remember the name or find a link to the thread.

oh yeah, its a killer!! we call it the andy moreau special. simple, works, lasts forever, and never sinks to the bottom. put it on a floating line, throw upstream at at 45 degree angle, let if float it in the current, and watch your line. the second it quits drifting down stream, lift up and fesh on!! put two on and its twice as nice!! time is getting near!!

Re: Good white bass flies - 02/01/11 02:18 AM

"We" call it the Moreau fly because Andy, who guides on the Brazos and the Nolan rivers, showed it to Les Jackson, who in turn showed it to his friends. This is just about the only fly I use on these rivers, which I have been fishing since 1989. There is an abundance of shad in Lake Whitney, and when whites are in the lake they obviously key on them. Once they move up the rivers, the primary food source is the small, almost transparent minnows about an inch and a half long. When they have been in the river long enough, they key on these little guys.....hence the size 10/12 hooks. Actually, they will hit a small nickle plated hook with two strands of crystal flash....but who wants to tie such a boring fly. The bigger flies will catch fish.....just about anything will when the fish are all wadded up and biting. But when things slow down these small flies will continue to catch fish, particularly if you let them hang down stream near the bottom for extended periods of time. Just let it soak until you get a tug. Hell, you can catch a truck load of the damn things just hanging one of these flies under a bobber on a Donald Duck spin cast rod.

Re: Good white bass flies - 02/01/11 01:18 PM

Budd dated himself with the Donald Duck rod comment! farmer
BUT, he is correct on the use of the Moreau fly.
Budd introduced several of us to it last spring and it worked GREAT!!! thumb thumb

Sparse really is confusing when it comes to fly tying. It never looks quite right to the tyer but the fish see it differently. Clousers are another good example of sparse is better.

oh okay thats what its called then sorry for the wrong name

Re: Good white bass flies - 02/01/11 10:09 PM

My experience has been that white bass are notorious short strikers, so I trim the tails on my Clousers or tie similar flies with almost no tail, more like a Crazy Charlie. They'll also take chartreuse sliders with dumbbell eyes to get them deep.

Re: Good white bass flies - 02/01/11 11:04 PM

Re: Good white bass flies - 02/02/11 01:17 AM

There ya go.....

As the run goes on, you might transition to something a little smaller. Les Jackson ties some mini clousers that work really well.

Re: Good white bass flies - 02/02/11 06:15 PM

Ya that was the only hook size I had it was
mustad 3366in size two I is more a largemouth
bass fly but I thought it would work for white

Re: Good white bass flies - 02/04/11 07:31 PM

What Mick said!!! Charlies have been the ticket for me this year...much better than micro clousers. On about a 10 or 12 hook is all you need. Cast at a 45, watch the end of your line. If it pauses, raise up. Fish on.

Re: Good white bass flies - 02/09/11 06:58 PM

Nice to see that some areas are getting enough rain to get the white bass moving. It is going to be a long time before Lake Somerville has its run. I am guessing that unless the rains come soon, we may be just like several years ago when the run didn't happen until the end of April!

The Moreau fly has a pretty strange color combination, but if the fish like them, who cares?
Posted By: Budd

Re: Good white bass flies - 02/10/11 06:29 PM

You can make them any color you like....Actually, a couple strands of crystal flash on a silver hook works as well and anything...

Catching Sand bass is not brain surgery.

Re: Good white bass flies - 02/21/11 02:38 PM

If the fish are keying on small minnows...yes. Make sure you coat the thread body with something to keep it from being chewed off. Sally's works about as well as anything.

These are red tying thread coated with superglue....

Re: Good white bass flies - 02/21/11 04:24 PM

Robin,
I killed the white bass at Colorado Bend last year on some white blondies that you had tied.

I will have to get you to tie me some more.
