Lantern talk

Lantern talk - 07/02/14 05:02 PM

I'm fixing to upgrade my lanterns. Right now I use colemans with propane bottles for fuel. Thinking about going with the LED type. Any recomendations or comments? Thanks

Good luck roadtrip--
I'll be curious also--
I've kinda checked on this but haven't found anything that will replace my colman's--
But I want to if they can get bright enough without 18 D batteries-

I prefer the light from a Coleman but an LED won't set anything on fire .

The dang hissing sound is one of the things that bugs me. I prefer to hear the sounds of the night....

Never thought of that
I thought the hissing was the sound of the night

Well, if it's a sound you associate with camping then it can't be all bad.
The only time I use the lantern is in the morning before daylight to see to make coffee, and after dark maybe to read awhile or fish by. Once it's lit, you really can't see anything outside the circle of light.
It does make a nice "homey" scene from a distance though, like when returning from a nature call out in the woods.

I like the sizzle of bugs trying to land on the glass.....

I use a drop light in a five gallon opaque bucket drill holes in the lid to vent heat and trap bugs

BriteLyt
I want one of these but can't see paying the price. I own two dual fuel Coleman's and one old regular Coleman.

I use the hookup that allows you to connect the lantern to a 20# propane bottle.

+1, I associate with camping. I love my propane coleman.

I usually throw a rope over a tree branch and hoist it high. Makes a pretty big circle of light.

I like the rope over a branch idea for a bigger circle of light. Currently I use a lantern stand that's about 7' high.
I'm going to keep the colemans for situations when weight and room aren't a consideration. Like car camping or camping out on the back 40. For canoe camping and backpacking I'm thinking of getting one of these: UST 30 day lantern

I don't camp but I have a few of these. They're limited but work fine in the right situation.

How many hours do you get from a 1 pound cylinder? Or do you hose up to the 20 pound bottles?

I am also interested in some quality led lanterns.I use some cheaper ones from Wal-Mart in the boat mainly because they are safer around the kids. They are also very convenient on overnight canoe camping trips...however it doesn't feel like camping if you're not hearing the lantern hiss or smelling the Off mosquito spray hanging in the air.

Re: Lantern talk - 05/08/16 10:51 PM

I ended up getting the UST 30 day lantern. It's built pretty sturdy and real easy to use. No fuel, propane bottles, or mantles to mess with. I don't think it gets as bright as my coleman lanterns; but I don't need it real bright. I mainly just use it before sunrise to make coffee or occasionally read by at night.

I never was that crazy about the hissing noise, kinda interferes with the sounds of the night, but I do like the smell of bug repellent.
