Jug line help.

I run 6 noodles 2 hooks per jug. heavy green braided line, about 1lb. lead on bottom.2 large snap swivels, 2ft. and4ft offthe bottom.
have been using large circle hooks on steel braided leaders about 1 ft.have caught a lot of blues,2 to 15lbs. and a couple 40 plus.
I am loosing a leader too often ,broke off at the hook.what would you use for drop line.Thank,s for the help.

I’m just using the heavy tarred line. I’m only using that line, no swivels, no weights.. I use 6/0 eagle claw circle sea or 7/0 gamakatsu circle hooks.. 5-7 foot from jug I tie my first hook on a loop I tie in the line, then the bottom hook is about 10-14 foot from the jug.. that’s all I do. I set them out in no less than 15foot and run them hourly till I’m done fishing.. usually 5 hours total as I’m always off the water before lunch! Good Luck!

I use #18 tarred line for the hook stages.

Lose the snaps (of the snap swivels). Once you get over 30+ the snaps tend to open (stretch out). Use Brass or SS barrel swivels from 3/0 to 4/0. But no snaps. As to why you're breaking hooks, it could be a number of things. You only noted they were big circle hooks. What brand, what size, and what material (type of metal)?

I have found that some SS hooks, if used in the water too much, somehow the minerals in the water or in the sediment below, make them brittle enough to just snap apart instead of even trying to bend.

I am using big snaps,but have had a couple fail,I wanted to replace on the waterfast, my bad.I will go to tarred line.c.c. was built
in 64 and their big kitties there,witch I turn loose.

I use tarred black line from academy or walmart in the 100-150 pound range for my main line and my leader. Over 100 pounds can be hard to fit in some smaller hooks so depends on what hooks you want to use on what size I use but 100 pounds is all the strength you'll every need.

I get 3/4 inch pvc and put contact cement on them and slide them into my swim noodle to where the ends are flush with the noodle. I then wrap white duct tape around the swim noodle to make it stronger plus comply with state law that jug lines must be white and allows my hooks to poke into the duct tape noodle along with write the legal stuff on it. Then about 3-4 inches from one end of the pvc/noodle, I drill a hole all the way through the noodle. This allows me to run that black tarred string through it to secure it directly to a trotline clip. Then pull tight and wrap 40-50 foot of string on it or more than you need. You can adjust how deep your hooks are in seconds with this system!

Hope that helps some! That is my drifting rig, I have another one for anchored jugging but trying to modify these drifiting jug lines to be santee-cooper rigged so I can better fish ledges and drop offs with a drifiting jug.

Dude, simplify your rig. Complicated rig loose fish. Simple rigs land fish. One hook per jug with twice as many jugs lets you cover twice as much water. Chunk all the swivels other than maybe one swivel to connect the mainline to the jug if using free float jugs.

At the very least learn to tie a dropper loop and chuck all those swivels. This is coming from a guy imports and sell swivels. So for me to tell you to chunk the swivels might say something.
