we use to use 1/2 hen scratch and 1/2 wheat 2 full beers pour them over the grain then add water till it fully covers the grain ..... set in the sun.. check every 2-3 days add water...we use 5 gallon buckets also but we had snap on lids.....keep the flies out and the next door neighbors under control thumb

I just buy a sack of 20% protein cattle cubes. No muss no fuss no mess. Throw out a few and start fishing.
Them kitty cats smell the molasses real quick.

I use this a basis for bluegill bait. Once fermented I let the black soldier flies in an lay eggs. Plenty of bait for big bluegill. Big bluegill = big cats.
